Nanny mayor forces moms to breastfeed

He’s pro-abortion, pro-amnesty for illegal aliens, and pro-gun control. He enacted an Agenda21-like plan called PlaNYC: A Greener, Greater New York “to fight global warming and protect the environment.” He’s extended a smoking ban to all commercial buildings. He’s banned trans fats.
Now the nosy mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, wants the city’s hospitals to lock up infant formula so as to force more mothers to breastfeed their newborn babies.

Mary Kay Linge reports for the New York Post, July 29, 2012, that starting Sept. 3, New York city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.
Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives.

While breast-feeding activists applaud the move, bottle-feeding moms are bristling at the latest lactation lecture. “If they put pressure on me, I would get annoyed,” said Lynn Sidnam, a Staten Island mother of two formula-fed girls, ages 4 months and 9 years. “It’s for me to choose.”
Under Latch On NYC, new mothers who want formula won’t be denied it, but hospitals will keep infant formula in out-of-the-way secure storerooms or in locked boxes like those used to dispense and track medications. With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.
“It’s the patient’s choice,” said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. “But it’s our job to educate them on the best option.”
Lisa Paladino, of Staten Island University Hospital, said: “The key to getting more moms to breast-feed is making the formula less accessible. This way, the RN has to sign out the formula like any other medication. The nurse’s aide can’t just go grab another bottle.”
Some of the hospitals already operate under the formula lockdown. “New York City is definitely ahead of the curve,” said Eileen DiFrisco, of NYU Langone Medical Center, where the breast-feeding rate has surged from 39 to 68% under the program.
Breast-feeding in the first weeks gives a baby a critical healthy start, many medical experts say. It helps the digestive system develop and protects the baby with the mother’s immunities. Nursing also helps the mother recover from childbirth.
But not everyone is convinced. “They make formula for a reason, and the FDA makes sure it’s safe,” said Roxanne Schmidt, whose 14-month-old twins were fed with formula from birth. “Locking it up is just wrong.”
That isn’t the point, is it?
It’s not about whether breast milk is better than infant formula. The crux of the issue is whether THE GOVERNMENT gets to play “Big Nanny Brother Knows Best” to force us to do what’s supposedly in our best interest.
Truly, the Left are pretentious know-it-all elites who have a high opinion of themselves and utter contempt for the people — we whom Katie Couric, in a moment of candor, calls the “great unwashed.”

  1. I hope the dingbat mayor gets sore nipples ! Freakin’ moron !
    (…and I only know because I’m a sensitive,empathetic SOB)

  2. We have communist New York.

  3. Wow, just shocking, even for him! I breastfed both of my kids for awhile but I did supplement with formula cause otherwise is all you do is nurse. Even a “hundred” years ago when I had my first they were all about pushing the breast and I did feel guilty and agreed to breastfeed. I don’t regret a minute of it but they are quite pushy and if you ask about other options they are not that helpful.

  4. It is beyond absurd!!! Seriously, I don’t get why women have the right over their bodies on some aspects (abortion) but not on others (breastfeeding). People have to make up their minds. Either the policy is in the kid’s best interest or is in the women’s. This flip flopping depending on the subject is rather tiresome. BTW, the comment “I guess he wants to get babies used to the idea of being ‘on the teat’ for the future….” is hilarious.

  5. I’d like to see a nurse tell a mom what she can or can’t do with her baby, don’t mess with a grizzly momma!

  6. I still find it astounding that the libs are so confused about that time of life just at/after childbirth…first they say partial birth abortion is the way to go and then say ‘breastfeed that baby! His future well-being depends on it!’ Excuse you????

  7. Thank you moxielouise and Dr. Eowyn for this post. Dear God, what an arrogant and idiotic mayor! There are certain extremely personal choices that are no one’s business, and nursing is oneof those personal choices. This really tells all government that has no respect for its citizens and their own free will and intelligence. Makes me ill!

    • You’re welcome, Joan…I’m beginning to wonder if NYC is like a testing ground for the federal government. “Let’s see how far we can push these people…if it works here, well, then…” SOOO glad I live smack dab in the middle of the country!

  8. I would be willing to bet that the formula manufactures might have a thing or two to say about this issue as well. Not only is the honorable idiot in charge trying to tell moms and hospitals what to do, but his bright idea will drive sales down for companies like Similac and Enfamil…I don’t think they’ll sit still for this.

  9. When and how did all of this happen? It seems like a dream, like some hellish Rip Van Wrinkle story where I fell asleep in a relatively free place, and woke up in the pages of an Orwellian dystopia. Anti-smoking laws and helmet laws, seat-belt laws, mandatory insurance laws….banning certain kinds of food, certain amounts of food, who can feed their kid what, what you’re free to say, who and what you can criticize…..rule of law, habeus corpus, freedom to protest, freedom to assemble, dhs, ndaa, it’s insanity! There’s lead in the water, folks. There’s nothing more terrifying than feeling like you’re one of the few remaining sane and sober ones. It’s like discovering you’re in the matrix, a Stephen King novel, a Twilight Zone episode. Where’s my grape Kool-Aid and bath salts? I want my purple tennis shoes, dammit! If I’m being helplessly marched towards the slaughter-house I want the same delusions of “everything’s fine” as everyone else, right up until the hammer falls on my cerebral cortex!

    • SDF, I can totally relate. I feel like MacMurphy in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. They haven’t gotten me yet but it’s just a matter of time before Nurse Ratchett is here with my meds. Where’s the Chief when you need him?? Lemme outta here!

    • Like this scene in Demolition Man…

  10. There can be some certain personal choices that are not a business of anyone and nursing is one of those choices. This tells a lesson to all the governments that have no respect for its citizens.

  11. Although, I don’t think the gov should be mandating breast feeding. Breast feeding is best for the baby no matter what. As long as the mother is eating a healthy, organic, Non-GMO diet, (all the infant formulas have more than 50% sugars and GMO made by MonSatan and are very toxic to the baby) not the standard american diet (SAD diet)), the baby will be getting adequate nutrition.
The mom should also supplement her diet with 1 oz of purified water (to eliminate toxic chemicals, fluoride and pharmaceuticals that are not filtered out of the water) per lbs of her body weight to make sure she is adequately hydrated as dehydration will prevent enough milk from being produced; omega-3 fatty acids; sea vegetables for the iodine; silica from a food grown source; and a food grown Selenium. Never use synthetic supplements or vaccines of any kind…ever!!!
If the mother is not producing enough milk, then nutritional yeast and herbal supplements could be added to increase production.
I was feared out of breast feeding my infant son (which forced me to use toxic infant formula made by pharmacutials companies loaded with GMOs and sugar) with congenital heart disease and he was vaccine injured at around 15 months because of the extremely high quantity of mercury/thimeriso, aluminum and other carcinogens and heavy metals they put into the vaccines. Also, you should never, ever vaccinate because there are aborted fetal cells in the vaccines…called HUMAN ALBUMIN or I forgot what the other name for it was. Why are they putting that into the vaccines? It causes major problems because the body recognizes the other DNA and starts attacking itself. I bet you thought those aborted babied were burned up in a n incinerator.
I could go on and on, but if a woman can’t breast feed, she should seek out healthy homemade formulas with organic raw goat or A2 cows milk as the base with added natural nutrients. Your baby will thank you for it. Here is one such company who is doing that

  12. Oh, I forgot another supplement that is really important…GTF Chromium (must be from a whole food source like Innate Response). It will prevent gestational diabetes and is very important to continue to take long after baby is born as chromium is essentual for good health for everybody.
