The Global Warming Taliban made this commercial, “No Pressure,” for its 10:10 Campaign — a worldwide campaign exhorting us to reduce our carbon emissions by at least 10% in 2010. The campaign was launched in London on September 1, 2009, and went global in mid-2010, with campaigns launching in around 12 countries. As of June 2010, 75,000 individuals, businesses, schools and organisations have joined the campaign and pledged to reduce their emissions by 10% in a year.
In this video, school children and adults who refuse to join 10:10 are blown up into bits, their blood and pieces of flesh spattering those nearby. This video/commercial is not a spoof. The people who put this together are serious and really really sick.
If the video’s been pulled by YouTube, you can see an Eyeblast version of it HERE.
Here’s what Wikipedia says about the commercial:
On Friday October 1, 2010, 10:10 released a short film in which people, including schoolchildren, are graphically blown to pieces for not taking action on climate change. The four-minute video ends with the words “Cut your carbon by 10%. No pressure”. Written by Richard Curtis and Franny Armstrong, directed by Dougal Wilson, and featuring celebrities Gillian Anderson, David Ginola, Peter Crouch and Radiohead, the film has been described as ‘attention-grabbing’ and ‘pretty edgy’ It aimed to challenge the “no pressure” attitude often displayed both by governments and individuals, since 10:10 are reported as saying that there are just four years to stabilise carbon emissions.
“Doing nothing about climate change is still a fairly common affliction, even in this day and age. What to do with those people, who are together threatening everybody’s existence on this planet? Clearly we don’t really think they should be blown up, that’s just a joke for the mini-movie, but maybe a little amputating would be a good place to start? […] We ‘killed’ five people to make No Pressure – a mere blip compared to the 300,000 real people who now die each year from climate change.” –Franny Armstrong, founder of 10:10
“I was very happy to get blown up to save the world.” -Jamie Glover, the child-actor who plays the part of Philip in No Pressure
Although originally planned to be shown in cinema and television advertisements, 10:10 removed the film from their website and YouTube later on October 1st following negative publicity, and placed a notice on their website saying, “Many people found the resulting film extremely funny, but unfortunately some didn’t and we sincerely apologise to anybody we have offended. […] At 10:10 we’re all about trying new and creative ways of getting people to take action on climate change. Unfortunately in this instance we missed the mark. Oh well, we live and learn.”
H/t beloved fellow (we miss you!) Will.
