Men Without Chests Threaten Our Culture and Civilization

By guest blogger Kelleigh Nelson

“We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honour and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and bid the geldings be fruitful.” – C. S. Lewis

The Abolition of Man by C.S. Lewis was first copyrighted in 1944, which makes this short booklet all the more astonishing.  The insight Lewis had in those years of the pervasive philosophy that was intermingling within the educational systems is just as relevant for today, and now it is right in our faces. We can see vividly the corruption of morals and basic decency that is leading us more and more toward a Godless society.  C.S. Lewis looked logically at what happens when faith and tradition are removed from a society.  And we just watched what Lewis was describing in Judge Kavanaugh’s hearings, including the protests by Soros-paid anarchists.

Men Without Chests

“Men Without Chests” is the curious title of the first chapter of C.S. Lewis’ Abolition of Man.  Lewis explains that the “The Chest” is one of the “indispensable liaison officers between cerebral man and visceral man. It may even be said that it is by this middle element that man is man: for by his intellect he is mere spirit and by his appetite mere animal.” Without “Chests” we are unable to have confidence that we can grasp objective reality and objective truth.

The result of such chest-less education, as Lewis warns, is a dystopian and totalitarian future.

As our society disintegrates into what C.S. Lewis described in his short booklet, we are seeing more and more men without chests.  Those men are allowing the destruction of our society by anarchists who literally hate America and her culture and want it destroyed.

Facebook Executive Faces Outrage

Recently, hundreds of Facebook employees voiced outraged at senior executive Joel Kaplan, head of global policy for Facebook, for attending Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s congressional hearing in an apparent show of support for the Supreme Court nominee.  Kaplan is a longtime friend of Judge Kavanaugh.  Many employees felt that Kaplan’s presence at the hearing signaled that Facebook as a company had endorsed Judge Kavanaugh. They expressed their discontent in internal company message boards as well as directly to CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

CEO Sheryl Sandberg wrote in an internal message to employees that she thought “it was a mistake for him to attend given his role in the company.” A meeting has been scheduled to further discuss employees’ concerns. Zuckerberg, Sandberg and Kaplan are expected to attend and answer questions.

Kaplan apologized in a note to staff, but also added later, “I believe in standing by your friends, especially when times are tough for them.”

When did having friends and loyalties outside of your employer’s ideals become verboten?  Why apologize?  For what?  Only men with no chests do that.

University President Congratulates Childhood Friend

Charles Davis, the dean of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia, recently issued an apology to those he had “offended” with a tweet congratulating a childhood friend on becoming the state’s Republican candidate for governor. (See “U. of Georgia professor apologizes for offense of congratulating childhood friend who won a GOP primary“)

Davis then faced an intense backlash from liberals, who accused Davis of being a “racist” blind to his own “privilege” for daring to suggest that Brian Kemp is “a nice guy.”

Davis tweeted to his friend, “I went to high school with GOP guv candidate @BrianKempGA.  We played YMCA ball from childhood.  Politics be damned.  He is a nice guy, always was Kind to a fault.  He’s a friend, always has been, and will be when we’re old(er) and grey(er).  That’s how all this should work people.”

He then apologized and tweeted, “I’d like to apologize to anyone offended by my tweet shout out to Brian Kemp.  It was ill-timed and poorly written.  I’ve read and learned so much from you all and will endeavor to be more thoughtful.”

No, it wasn’t ill-timed, and neither was it poorly written. Get a chest!

In other words, Charles Davis has been warned that speaking or caring about Republican friends is verboten.  Men without chests!

Professor James Moore Defends Constitution

In this #MeToo era of believing every charge leveled by a woman against a man, the University of Southern California students want Professor James Moore fired for stating the law…innocent until proven guilty.  This is a part of the U.S. Constitution that ensures justice for those accused of a crime.  Not so for these university students however.

Democrats rape U.S. Constitution

Moore got himself in hot water when he noticed an email that was sent out to all staff and students at the university last Thursday. The email, which instructed students to “Believe Survivors” of sexual assault, inspired Moore to give those students a lesson in the criminal justice system.  “Accusers sometimes lie,” he pointed out in a reply-all email of his own. “If the day comes you are accused of some crime or tort of which you are not guilty, and you find your peers automatically believing your accuser, I expect you find yourself a stronger proponent of due process than you are now.”

Instead of the university supporting the truth Professor Moore was trying to teach his students, Dean Jack Knott placated them with comfort and assured them that they were right and Professor Moore was wrong!  “What he sent was extremely inappropriate, hurtful, insensitive,” he said. “We are going to try to do everything we can to try to create a better school, to educate the faculty. This is going to be a multi-pronged effort. We are going to have a faculty meeting later this week around implicit bias, sensitivity towards survivors.”

Obviously, it’s extremely inappropriate to point out that the accused in this country deserve due process.

Dean Jack Knott believes the truth of the U.S. Constitution is verboten.  Another man without a chest.

The Double Standard

While our secular society still maintains that honor, ethics, and integrity matter, it has purposely attacked, silenced, or destroyed those institutions and organizations that used to teach moral principles and universal Godly truths that instilled honor and character into men’s hearts and souls.

Today’s educational establishments have embraced moral relativism. Other political and cultural institutions have done the same, including our so-called progressive churches where most pulpits spew watered down pablum.

Interesting that in the cases of Tawana Brawley, the Duke lacrosse players, and the Rolling Stone defamation article, investigations of the alleged victims proved the innocence of the accused.  Over 219 celebrities, politicians, CEOs, and others have been accused of sexual misconduct since April 2017.  One wonders how many of these accusations were valid.  And our Senate Judiciary Committee is not seeking an investigation of Christine Blasey Ford.  We are just to accept that despite a total lack of proof or corroboration, she is telling the truth.

Now a retired University of Southern Maine professor, Susan Feiner, has offered students a course credit to harass Sen. Susan Collins on Kavanaugh because Senator Collins understood the fallacious attacks on this brilliant Judge and the importance of nominating this man to the supreme court. This professor has done this without the consent of the committee of faculty or university deans…and this is the seditious rot inside the brains of those teaching our young people.

Conclusion

Real women want strong masculine men with chests.  They want decent, honorable, reliable men who have not been feminized by society and do not cower to the pressures of today’s tyrannical and anarchist society.  And men have two choices: to find female strength captivatingly attractive, or to be insecure and intimidated. Real men love strong women, because God’s glory is beautiful, and “woman is the glory of man.” Link

C.S. Lewis saw the early stages of the moral collapse, societal chaos, and cultural decay we’re all now experiencing full force.  Inevitable destruction awaits all societies that reject universal moral principles, deny the existence of objective reality, and silence and punish those who teach and speak the truth.  Men must return to God, follow His moral principles, seek the truth, and lead virtuous lives.

In his September 19, 1796 Farewell Address to the nation, George Washington stated: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, Religion and Morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of Patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great Pillars.”

William McGuffey, author of the McGuffey’s Readers, which were the mainstay of America’s government public school system from 1836 till the 1920’s, wrote: “Erase all thought and fear of God from a community, and selfishness and sensuality would absorb the whole man.” Where do you think the world is heading today?

  1. Lewis & Tolkien knew what was coming because of their time at Oxford, where the Fabian Socialists were and their plans for world government via the Roundtable groups aka Milner’s Kindergarten. Their writings reflected that.

  3. Excellent article. When did it become woman against man? I like men, most men at least. They give much to society the same as women. I find this tiresome that these protesters seem to think they represent all women, they don’t. I like to hold conversations with men, not scream at them or degrade. I like my doors opened for me and I like equality in most other subjects. I like to think I am equal, but not superior. I find working with most men easier than working with some women. I hold no loyalty to just one sex, my loyalty lies with my God, my country, my flag and my family, not to some women holding these temper tantrums. What fools.

    • We should come back to recognizing men & women as ‘complimentary’ to each other rather than as exclusively ‘equal’. Equality under the law, for sure – since both are thinking breathing human beings, but equality I think of as a subset of complimentary. If something is complimentary to another thing, it must have some inherently similar properties – whereas it’s not the same with equality (i.e., two things can be equal without being complimentary). A complimentary relation is of a HIGHER order than that of an equal relation. Men & women have natural differences, and as a result tend to serve contrasting roles. This difference is not hierarchical, one better one worse – but COMPLIMENTARY to one another…

  4. ‘…including the protests by Soros-paid anarchists.’

I am getting really tired of this demonizing anarchists BS. They are anything but. These ‘people’ are Neo-Bolsheviks. Communists. Satanists. And a million other things that have nothing whatsoever to do with anarchists in any way, shape, or form. Their god is State. Anarchists DO NOT BELIEVE in the concept of State, as it is nothing more than a monopoly on violence and the penultimate suppressor of human liberty and dignity. These paid (or unpaid) agitators do not even remotely adhere to the Non-Aggression Principal, the cornerstone of anarchism, which means exactly what it says.

Thank you Dr. Eowyn for publishing this, your picture at the top of the page is perfect…those are men without chests!

  6. The Fabians gave way to the like of Bill Ayers, who put away the incendiaries and became an education expert allowed to advise on curriculum. The poisonous seed from Columbia (host of the Frankfurt School transplants as well) was planted and now we see the rotten fruit borne throughout our K-12 schools and universities.

  7. This chest metaphor is the best! May it catch on quickly and widely.

    • Interesting, too, that just last night I was talking to my wife about how glad I am that God made me a large man. No off-the-rack suit fits me correctly because of my barrel chest, but I’d never seek to change this.

Since Trump has come on the scene, it’s been a pleasure to see people treat me less like a monster, and more like a mentor. Young men now seek my opinion instead of dismissing me as a privileged, old White male.

The pendulum is swinging back. Few people see this kind of change in their lives. Let us thank God for it, and then do our part to propagate it.

  8. Writing as a married man with a chest I say that if men are expected to grow chests then (especially married) women must allow for the expansion of those chests. What does this mean biblically one may ask? Since woman was created from man it means women must learn to defer to men in most situations and circumstances instead of insisting that her own wants, needs, and desires be constantly attended to or met. She must be strong enough in her own person-hood, virtue, and selflessness to trust that her husband is the leader in the home and has her best interests at heart – emotions aside. She is called to submit and he is called to love her in totality. That is the biblical model for marriage. Is is not “submitting to one another” since that would be utter chaos and somebody must lead. What this passage really means is that the man must not lord it over her but take her opinions into consideration whenever making important decisions but HE makes the decisions with her input. Will women allow this to happen or will their be contention in a marriage? My wife has finally learned “who wears the pants” in our family after 19 years of marriage and she is so much happier for that grace. Now, how many supposedly Christian women reading this are gnashing their teeth right now?

  9. It’s a lot more than just a relativism about morality taking over the minds of these feminists, whose public behavior and belief formation are nothing short of irrationalist hysteria. Theirs is an epistemic relativism that denies there is any amount of disconfirming or corroborating evidence that bears on what they want to be true, and worse, everywhere you look, they’re congratulating themselves on being unteachably immune to arguments relying on observation/facts, deduction, or induction, on the doubly absurd grounds that they’re tools of white male sexual abuse of women. They see their antics and stuff like wearing pussy hats as a sign of mental health.

But, there’s more than just a disavowal of factually verifiable evidence and embrace of epistemic relativism in the minds of hysterical young women going on in America today, as it’s equally taking hold among adult men on the right who believe what they want to believe about 911. They grow just as irrationally hysterical (Sean Hannity, Brian Kilmeade, eg) as our young snowflakes when presented with evidence and sound argument disproving the 911 fairy tale as told by the Deep State.

Just as no amount of evidence either disconfirming Dr Ford’s testimony or corroborating Judge Kavanaugh’s testimony will move these irrationally hysterical feminists, so, too, no amount of evidence and scientific argument provided by several thousand of the world’s preeminent experts in every field bearing on the facts will persuade Fox News’ followers that Israel and its Neocon fifth column did 911. And of course, “controlled opposition” can’t apply to Fox News because they don’t want it to. Case closed.

  10. The Christian churches must start preaching the Gospel again. What most of them have been preaching for several decades is nothing more than a social gospel that has no power because it cannot change the human heart. Only the Holy Spirit living inside us can do that.

Here is a comment on Twitter by Mark Taylor this morning:

“Don’t think that a lot of the church is not part of, or in covenant with the Deep State. Too many leaders have bowed to political and social pressure. They have sacrificed the truth, and the people, on the altar of Mammon for wealth, influence, or control. Repent! Time is up. …-”

A couple of weeks ago, I listened to a program with Mark as their guest. He spoke about the “Clergy Response Team”, which is something I heard a man tell about way back in 2001, right after 9/11. I didn’t hear anything about it from anyone else until Mark started telling about it recently, so I wasn’t sure if it was true. Mark said he has seen the actual paperwork, the non-disclosure agreements that clergy and others signed. Others include music ministers, youth ministers, deacons, Sunday school teachers, and members of the congregation. I now believe it IS true. Here is basically what he said about it on Twitter, but the interviews I have heard give more information.

“The Clergy Response Team is up to 1.6 million pastors nationwide. Under Bush, Obama, And Clinton, they were going to be used, with the feds, to round up their flock, pervert Romans 13, get you to submit your guns, and to the government. Put you into internment camps, and separated from your family. They signed non disclosures, given special privileges for themselves and family, to save themselves. They were leading their flock to a literal slaughter. They never thought she would lose. The flock has a right to know. Release the names! Treason! …-“

  12. There no adequate words to describe the malevolent behavior of those like Susan Feiner, among other professors I have read about on the web, who have made public their rabid violent comments. I am at a loss .

  13. william douglass

I read Abolition of Man in the 80’s and believed it very relevant then… I have thought about that book over the years and observed that sadly, we are now so far beyond what he was warning about, especially regarding the current educational agenda/curriculum… Not only men without chests, but ‘men’ voluntarily surrendering other body parts in favor of ‘transgenderism’… it’s insanity

  15. I read this last night. C.S. Lewis is one of my favorites. He writes simply but powerfully. He understands that there is “natural law” that no amount of contrivance can circumvent.

It is good to look back and realize that what we face isn’t new. It sometimes changes terminology or tactics, but at its root its the same.

  16. This may be a little off the mark but it is something that demeans men. I am talking about the portrayal and betrayal of men in the media in commercials especially…. There are 2 commercials that really grate on this old white MAN… ALDI shows a man being pushed in a shopping cart being talked down to in baby talk by a woman supposedly his mother… The commercial is called “Child Seat”…. The other is called “Double Life” by Progressive Insurance which shows a man putting gas in a mini van. He is being babytalked by his wife “Does your tummy feel better so you can ride in the front seat”?… When you show men being treated as children like that it sends a message. The wrong message but a message…

  17. This is one reason I support Trump – he has a chest. He calls it like it is: bashes the media & dems, uses the term illegal alien and even “mocks” Dr. Fraud.

He may be crash at times yet you know he won’t ever be donning a pussy hat.

  19. What an outstanding article Dr. Eowyn.

“Real women want strong masculine men with chests. They want decent, honorable, reliable men who have not been feminized by society and do not cower to the pressures of today’s tyrannical and anarchist society. And men have two choices: to find female strength captivatingly attractive, or to be insecure and intimidated. Real men love strong women, because God’s glory is beautiful, and “woman is the glory of man.”

I think men and women have different ways of showing strength. Seems to me that the young men are caving, not to feminine strength, but to bullying, browbeating, demandings, selfishness and guilt. When all is said and done, what role is there for young men to play when the women are demanding leadership and demeaning men for their leadership? Everything masculine is being maligned, and yet women are exhorted to act in traditionally masculine ways. The controllers have done a bang up job of twisting the minds of the young, and the only hope is if enough get a clue when things aren’t working out for them so they might seek the material like the one you posted above by CS Lewis.

    • When I was seeking outside of Christianity for spiritual answers many years ago, I read a lot of Paramahansa Yoganada. Much of his wisdom has stayed with me. He explained on one occasion why there were no great women avatars. The great teachers of the worlds religions have always been men. He explained that there were indeed many women of the same spiritual attainment, but that when it came to having the power to spread new spiritual thought, to cause great change, it is only the masculine dynamic that has the power to do that, and it is only found in a biological man. There are many great spiritual ” mothers” but their power in the perfect expression of unconditional love and they comfort and nurturance. They do not, and cannot contain the force and power that is the charisma of the male. The present age is beating the charisma out of men.

  20. I wonder how much of “men without chests” is due to the breakdown of families and single mothers raising boys without dads?

    • I had an aunt who lost her husband at a young age and never remarried. She had two young sons that she raised all by herself. They both became fine young men that were “thoroughly male” and went on to raise families of their own.

My aunt was tough but nurturing. She let them be boys as well. My aunt found strength in the way she was raised. She wasn’t a whiner. She was a doer.

    • Why we can’t make sweeping generalizations, and certainly there are strong women who have done good jobs raising boys, I think the question you ask is valid. Maybe this is more about the mother herself, and her values rather than single motherhood itself- after all look, at Ben Carson. From my own personal observations I know one married mother that has spoiled her kids and always got in the way when the father tried to bring discipline. The boys are a mess and without chests. Another friend who was married three times and divorced three times with two kids by two different Dads, is soured on men( even though it is her fault that she used so little discernment in her choices ) So her kids grew up with no fathers. The son has no chest either. His life is a mess too. Two of these young men each from different families married women who ended up physically abusing them and are trying to destroy the men; i.e., take them to the cleaners monetarily and custody wise.

      • Yeah, there are lots of variables. No matter what, however, whoever is the adult must have a strong moral character and practice what they preach. In my aunt’s case my dad (her brother) served as “surrogate father” many times over the years. My father had 13 brothers and sisters. There were always some around to help.

My uncles and aunts were like secondary mothers and fathers to me. My cousins were like brothers and sisters. I think we’ve lost a lot of that. Life is complicated. Even when we’re less than perfect we must keep moving forward in the right direction.

        • “My uncles and aunts were like secondary mothers and fathers to me. My cousins were like brothers and sisters.”

You mean Hillary had it right as in, ” it takes a village”?!
I jest. You are right. The more there is an extended family the more security and support, and the less you need the government and “the village” sticking their damn noses in ” to help”.

      • There are always anecdotal exceptions. But we have, by now, a wealth of studies and statistical data on the negative effects on children of growing up without fathers.
        https://thefathercode.com/the-9-devastating-effects-of-the-absent-father/

        • As well as men without chests, I am wondering with a 50 % divorce rate how much this has been responsible for all the young women out there doing their man hating. After all if Daddy and Mommy are split and Daddy doesn’t care about you, or see you much, or maybe doesn’t bother with child support payments, you might have a few problems. I have a friend who has raised her daughter without any Dad and the daughter is as man hating as the mother is at this point and she is only 25 years old.

          • Ditto! I’ve been wondering about the female counterpart of “men without chests” — contemporary “feminists” who hate men with a viciousness that’s shocking.

        • I wouldn’t argue with that. It’s the ideal. However, I’m just saying there are women who can fill both roles with some help. It isn’t desirable.

  21. Lewis was remarkably prescient. It’s as if he knew he was writing to people another generation out from his time. I have gone through his space trilogy a number of times and always feel like he’s talking to me in the 21st century. His piece, “Men without chests,” is shockingly on target.

    • leeann Springer

I think Lewis was given foreknowledge of the future from God. His writing seems to me, more of a vision than a prediction. Suffice it to say, he was “spot on” because it is now sad reality. May God help us. Leeann
