Mark Kelly’s campaign against “assault weapons” such as the AR-15 rifle has sparked a local backlash. On March 13, a Tucson, Arizona radio host published a photograph of former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords holding an AR-15 rifle at a gun range.
Giffords has since confirmed that the photograph is authentic.
James T. Harris, blogging at the website of “101.4 FM The Truth,” wrote:
What is wrong with this picture? Absolutely nothing, and prior to the aggressive progressive opportunistic fear mongering in the wake of Sandy Hook, this picture would have raised no eyebrows and garnered little public attention.
However, in response to the exploitative political scheming of Mark Kelly, persons connected to Congresswoman Giffords released this photo in response to what they perceived to be her husband’s hypocrisy.
Subsequently, Breitbart News confirmed the authenticity of the image through law enforcement sources in Arizona, and obtained a copy of the photograph from a source who requested anonymity.
The latter source was present when the photograph was taken, and said that Giffords had requested it for campaign purposes during October 2010.
According to the source, the image sent to Breitbart News was cropped to protect the identity of the person on the right-hand side of the original photograph (to Giffords’s left).
The source, who is a member of the law enforcement community, told Breitbart News:
“We were told she wanted to toughen her image. She asked to come out and she wanted to shoot a rifle. She had one of our guys out there to show her how to shoot an AR-15.”
In January 2011, Giffords suffered near-fatal wounds in a mass shooting while meeting with constituents in Tucson. The perpetrator used a 9mm Glock 19 semi-automatic pistol.
Giffords and husband Mark Kelly have since formed an organization, Americans for Responsible Solutions, to press for policy changes such as limiting the sale of “assault weapons, ” including the AR-15.
Breitbart News reported last week that Kelly attempted to purchase an AR-15 from a gun store in Tucson earlier this month.
Likewise, the AR-15 that Giffords is shown holding in the image is a standard, semi-automatic civilian weapon, according to the source who saw it being taken.
The source saw a campaign official take the photograph, which was later provided to law enforcement personnel as a courtesy, according to the source.
The source says the existence of the photograph has been known in the local law enforcement community for a while: “I’m not the only one who knows about this photo.”
Multiple law enforcement sources in Arizona told Breitbart News that Mark Kelly’s campaign against “assault weapons” has generated resentment within the law enforcement community–and a desire that the photograph be made public.  The source who witnessed the photograph put it this way:  “Giffords and Kelly came across with a different demeanor in 2010. To me, it seems like they’ve done a complete 180 because of what happened. And with the latest controversy–with Mark Kelly doing what he did with the AR-15 stunt–this photo needs to be put out.”
While Kelly declined to comment, Americans for Responsible Solutions spokesperson Jen Bluestein told Breitbart News: “Looks like the photo is cropped.”  Bluestein noted that there are “many images of Gabrielle Giffords with guns,” though she said she had not seen the image of the AR-15 before.
At 1:14 p.m. PDT, Giffords posted two images on her Facebook page with the following statement:
“Here are two photos of me that a conservative blog has dug up. I remember both of these days fondly. The first is at the Tucson Police Department firing range. They invited me to test rifles and tasers that they bought with federal funds, which I helped secure. The second was in Afghanistan while I was visiting with our troops serving abroad. My work as Southern Arizona’s Congresswoman frequently put me in close contact with some of the world’s most powerful and deadly weapons – supporting police departments, advocating for the Border Patrol, standing up for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and supporting my constituents’ and my own Second Amendment rights.
I grew up with guns, and I like owning them. So does my husband Mark. It’s an interest we’ve shared ever since we met. It’s part of my heritage as an Arizonan and it’s my right as an American. Being able to shoot a gun is something I haven’t been able to do since I was shot – because my right arm is paralyzed, and I’m less mobile than I was.
“As I member of the House Armed Services Committee, I proudly spent a lot of time with our military, border patrol and state and local law enforcement. I guess the intention of those who have publicized these photos is to somehow call into question my belief that military style assault weapons should be more strongly regulated with background checks and other safeguards. I have never wavered in my support for those who serve our country. I fought to make sure they have the weapons and safety gear needed to carry out their mission, and proper health and mental care when their service ends.”
I don’t have to choose between owning, using, and enjoying guns, on one hand, and preventing gun violence, on the other. Both sides need to come together to support commonsense solutions to gun violence, like keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous people like the young man who shot me. That’s why I’m fighting this fight. That’s why I’m working to bring people together to support gun rights and reduce gun violence. I hope you join me.

Just a hunch, but I bet she supports Feinstein’s
Proposed ban on so-called “assault weapons”.

  1. And in the meantime, the MSM yawns between the chirping of crickets. If we can ever be rid of the Obama regime, somebody needs to look into pulling the FCC broadcast licenses of the Alphabet Soup media.

  2. ” DO AS I SAY , NOT AS I DO ” ………..The credo of the democrap party is on full display with that photo of GABBY having fun with the AR-15 . B.T.W…….Nice smile Gabby !

  3. Mark Kelly should’ve stayed an astronaut and not turned-in his cajones to be a hypocrite.

  4. How the fuck is it inconsistent to favor a ban on the sale of assault weapons and/or high capacity magazines but still accept ownership of handguns and hunting weapons.
Personally I’d like to get rid of morons like randy63ism and japoa.

    • Hey schmuck , have you ever heard of the term ” the slippery slope ” . Once the camel has it’s nose under the tent , the whole body is soon to follow .
And judging by your last sentence , you can’t handle an opposing point of view without pissing in your panties . Typical lib……….No thought , just emotion and feelings . So simple , so mundane , so lame !

    • F_ this; m_ that.
      No substantive argument. Just insults.
You Leftists are a walking testimony of your foulness.

    • Mark I want to say this really nice OK.
Bite me you Twit, now go away
Before you get your 4 brain cells in a twist.

    • You’ll figure it out when they come knocking on your door looking to confiscate your pellet rifle and slingshot.
      Dumbass.
      -Dave

      • Dave – how ’bout I come knocking on your door and shove your assault rifle up your ass? Where do you live dumbass.

        • Mark, not sure about Dave, but let’s see your in Troy Mi. And I’d say right around
          E. Square lake Rd.
          Livernois rd
          Cutting blvd
So how bout Dave comes knocking on your door, or if he’s busy, hell sounds like fun I’ll go.
BTW, did you even read the story. It was about Gabby wanting to toughen her image and had no problem then using an AR-15.
Now for political reasons her husband made a big deal out of purchasing one legally.
Not many people walk around with AR’s and rampage. Yes i has happened, but majority are handguns.
This is all about power and if you can’t see that then your not being honest.
Hell maybe Gabby after being shot in the head changed her mind…kule with me.
It’s the rest of the jerk offs who could care less about any of us.
They just want more power and control.

          • Send him. Or you, no matter. I have no problem stepping on cockroaches. I’ll meet either of you at a place of mutual acceptance.
My question was how is it inconsistent to favor assault weapon bans but accept handgun and rifle possession. I got nothing but rude responses to that question so piss on being civil in return.
Here is what Gifford’s stance (and I presume what Kelly supports) in regards to gun control:
Ban the sale or transfer of semi-automatic guns, except those used for hunting.
Maintain and strengthen the enforcement of existing state restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns.
Allow citizens to carry concealed guns.
Require manufacturers to provide child-safety locks on guns.
Require background checks of gun buyers at gun shows.
DOesn’t seem to onerous to me – unless you have a visceral fear that the government is out to get you.

            • “I got nothing but rude responses to that question so piss on being civil in return.”
You were the one who started the rudeness and viciousness.
Just so you know, this is the LAST time any comment from you will be published on FOTM.

            • You want to be civil , let’s find out . I’m one of the two ” morons ” you wanted to get rid of earlier in the comments section . Here’s a simple question that only needs a ONE word answer . If you cannot answer it in a one word answer , don’t bother . IS THE WORD ” HUNTING” IN THE 2ND AMEND . ?????????????????

              • One word? Not hardly.
Hunting? Not sure why you think it germane – so far as I know the controls proposed allow for self-protection, target and hunting – not just hunting. In my first question I should have said target/hunting weapons. Giffords position allows for concealed (i.e. handgun) weapons and only mentioned hunting w.r.t. semi-automatics. Personally I feel magazine capacity is a larger issue than semi-automatic. The 2nd amendment does mention ‘a well regulated militia’, no one seems to consider that phrase to have any significance – interesting, since it seems to provide the need for the right to bear arms.
My ‘moron’ response to the first two posters was due to the tone of their statements – mindless, knee jerk responses (not to say mine wasn’t, also).
Not sure why you think I am a lib or lefty because I favor some gun control. In fact I was in the Navy for 11 years and worked in the defense industry for the next 25 and am a proponent of strong defense, though I have seen much waste firsthand (in fact my old company wanted me to return for a couple months last fall to burn down a pile of contract money). I wish to hell we’d stop meddling in other countries and I think the U.S. has made big mistakes in the Middle East (pre and post-2001) and Latin America. I favor a balanced budget and eliminating the debt – preferably by spending cuts or increased tax revenue. I also favor a single payer health care system like Canada – I think one of the greatest domestic enemies is the cost of health care to those without resources. I did vote for Obama – but would have liked another option – Romney sure as shit wasn’t one – and after 8 years of Bush I don’t trust the Republicans. After years of trying to embrace religion I have given up as I have never gotten any answers and my invocations have gone unheeded. When I was working I gave a fair amount of money to charities (children’s, food banks, environmental) – now I give less but help construct housing in Hispaniola when I can.
Sorry to those I offended – and I truly hope you (and I) all find peace and satisfaction in life.

                • Mark, I do believe if we keep this up we might actually have a dialogue. :D. :Steve

                  • I thought to compliment you on your initial civil response to me but neglected to do so before I posted – thanks for that – and for this one
In that first message you inferred that gun control was only about wielding power. I do not agree with that and can say with certainty that I would not feel more secure in this country if the majority of people carried concealed weapons or assault rifles. I’ve been at a bar with a cop friend when his weapon slipped down his leg and fell out onto the floor – a possible serious incident. I sure as hell wouldn’t want to be in a room full of yahoos carrying and partying – alcohol or not.
During my Navy days I visited many countries where dudes carried sub-machine guns and assault rifles – rarely, even in a single country, did they wear a common uniform – that experience did not engender any confidence in my security there. Also I have never been in a situation in which I thought I needed a weapon for self-protection. My experience is not everyone’s, but it is what I draw my view of the world from. I’ve also had no experience that makes me fear the government.

                    • Mark, I meant “Gun Control” as in the politicians telling us what we can and can not own was about power. You can own a
stock mini – 14 which shoots a .223 round. Put a big scary pistol grip on it and it’s now an “assault weapon” still shooting the same .223 round but you can’t own that. That’s what I mean about “Power and Control..
The pol’s just love more power and control over us.
Look we have like 10,000 laws on the books. Maybe enforce those.
Background checks, no prob. How bout when a guy breaks the law and get’s ten yrs for his 5th felony he does 10, not 6 months.
And guns in a bar…nope. In Fla We lose our licence if we are there.
Hell if in resteraunt and waiting for table and they say pls wait in bar I say I’ll wait outside.
I’ve never felt safer then living in Fla. Nobody screws with nobody..
Everyone just assumes everyone else has a gun (they usually do) LOL
So you just smile and say have a nice day.
                      Steve

                  • I am unable to reply directly to your most recent response to me (for some reason).
I don’t disagree with much of what you say – but I do think there is an objective difference between long guns and assault weapons – maybe not too easy to codify.
                    1) Shorter overall length and shorted barrels make assault weapons easier to conceal and maneuver.
                    2) Assault weapons require a high rate of fire relative to a target or hunting rifle.
                    3) Assault weapons have large capacity magazines.
                    4) Assault weapons are optimized for killing at short range, not the situation in most target or hunting scenarios.
So, while an assault weapon may use the same round as a long gun, I believe there are fundamental and quantifiable differences.
While I think any viable response to gun violence requires a broad range of things – mental health, enforcing existing laws with substantial penalty, personal responsibility with regard to owning and storing weapons, mandatory training with weapons, limitations on weapons, registration and background checks – it seems a generally acceptable and necessary first step is better vetting of individuals attempting to obtain weapons. A report I read indicated that over 75% of mass killings in the U.S. were committed with weapons obtained legally.
I’m not sure smiling and being to someone you meet on the street because you think they might shoot you otherwise is a particularly desirable situation. As I said, I sure as hell don’t want to be in a crowd of people all carrying weapons – not just because of a nut opening up, but also due to the enhanced chance of an accident.
Since 4 or 5 of the posts I attempted have not made it onto this page, I will quit now and wish (most) of you well. DCG I sincerely hope it never comes to you feeling you have to defend your family from the government.

                    • “Since 4 or 5 of the posts I attempted have not made it onto this page, I will quit now”

That’s because you keep saying the same thing. With your first rude vicious comment, you’d already abused your commenting privileges. Please go away. You are not welcome on our Conservative blog.

                    • No problem – sayonara

    • Personally I would like to lob trolls like you off of bridges. I’m in Tulsa OK, look me up if you want some of this you leftarded bottom feeder. There’s plenty of scum on the bed of the Arkansas River for you to feast upon and plenty of bridges to get you there too.

    • One thumb up and six down. Let me guess Mark, your libturded vanity, it sticks out like a brown thumb. The flies, not to mention the smell, are a dead giveaway.
You need to get a colonic, dude. Cerebral and rectal.

      • Big surprise that I’d get thumbs down from an audience of cockroaches.
Tulsa Oklahoma? I’m sure you are familiar with the river scum as you undoubtedly live there to have easy access for your dinner. The smell and flies you mention are flying around you, shitbag.

        • Well here’s another ” thumbs down ” for you . If you quit responding like a 1st. grader , you might get a better response . Did you ever think of that ?Of course not ’cause lib’s don’t think , they feel ; that’s why they lose the intellectual argument all the time . DUUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

        • More libturded, cerebral flatulence Mark? You showed your true colors in your first post with the foulness of your language and in your last sentence as to wishing to get rid of Japoa and me. It was a personal attack and that alone is plenty enough for flies to congregate around. Please spare us the false contrition as per your comments to Japoa and Steve. It is only indicative of a person with a serious personality disorder, one I would hazard to guess as somewhat narcissistic. Speaking of character, what the hell were you doing in a bar with an armed, police officer who was drinking? Everybody knows guns and alchohol don’t mix. I wore the badge for 7 years and just about any 2nd grader can figure out that that is a big no no for any police officer worth his weight in bullets, tasers, pepperspray and handcuffs to do. Is that how things are done in Michigan?
This is a conservative blog and you knew that. You are clearly not a conservative. You have an agenda, You are a troll. You came here to troll in order to be provocative, to slake your ego and now you’re in full damage control mode. The problem is that you emote far too much and let your mouth overide your brain, therefore showing your bare, smelly ass for all and sundry to see and smell. Personally, I have much better things to do than troll around sites like Huffpo. Then again, I don’t have a king sized ego to satisfy either.

  5. The courts actually ruled that NEWS media are not obligated to tell the truth (fox monsanto case, fired news people). This is not about left and right people wake up. I dont have a political religion, and I can see Obama just picked up from where Bush left off, nothing has changed and we are heading down the same path. This has all been in the works for years. There are idiots on both sides, its all of them. Republicans voted for NDAA 2012 providing for the detention of American citizens without trial. They have all stepped on th Constitution together.

  6. Mark Kelly looks just like an ET to me; anyone else notice this?

  7. I have lost all respect for Mark Kelly.
    -Dave

  8. I’m late to the game as I’m out of computer range. Here’s my answer for you Mark.
As a woman, trained in firearms and one who has her CLP, I need/have the right to the legal (so far) weapon of my choice that works best for MY PERSONAL self defense. Call it an “assault” weapon, whatever you want. I’ve got knives & firearms that can be used as an “assault” weapon, or as I prefer to call them, a self defense weapon. I can handle an AR-15 much better than a 12 gauge shotgun w/a short grip due to the recoil buffer built into the AR-15. And I’ll take as many rounds per magazine as I can get. Never know when 3 criminals might show up who have more ammo than me.
I don’t hunt, yet will use every power that is granted to me under the 2A to protect my home and family. Try taking away my guns and it won’t be pretty.
This post is about how hypocritical all these elitist gun grabbers are, those with their own weapons & private security. I’ll be damned if they are going to change my Constitutional right.
