Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal strips food stamps looters of their "benefits"

On Oct. 12, 2013, the food stamps (Electronic Benefits Transfer or EBT) computer system went down in several states, including Louisiana.
Reportedly, Xerox, a vendor for the EBT system, experienced a power outage while conducting a routine backup test in one of the company’s locations.
Many stores turned away EBT shoppers, but not Wal-Mart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, Louisiana. Those stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though, since the EBT system was down, the cards were not showing limits. The store managers called corporate Walmart, whose spokesman said to let the food-stampers use the cards anyway.
In other words: FREE STUFF!
What happened was not pretty. The food-stampers went into a buying looting frenzy, stripping the stores’ shelves by the end of the day.
EBT runLocal police in Springhill and Mansfield were brought in for crowd control because there were so many people clearing off the shelves.
At 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts filled to overflowing in the aisles and left.
EBT run2Now, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal is holding the looters accountable.
From bizpacreview.com (via Clash Daily):

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and his administration took steps late Wednesday to strip food stamp benefits from those who loaded up their shopping carts knowing they had insufficient funds in their Electronic Benefits Transfer accounts during a system failure in October.

As a result of the temporary outage, over 12,000 transactions in Louisiana showed non-sufficient funds once the system got back online and retailers were able to process the purchases, according to The Advocate.

The Oct. 12 computer glitch wasn’t limited to Louisiana. At least 17 states were affected, resulting in many shoppers overflowing their carts to take advantage of the outage.

Under Jindal’s new directive, recipients will lose benefits for one year, two years or permanently, depending on how many prior violations they have on their record.

The Jindal administration will start with the worst cases first, according to Suzy Sonnier, secretary of the state Department of Children and Family Services.

“We must protect the program for those who receive and use their benefits appropriately according to the law,” Sonnier said in a prepared statement, according to The Advocate “We are looking at each case individually, addressing those recipients who are suspected of misrepresenting their eligibility for benefits or defrauding the system.”

Well done, Governor Jindal!

Under the POS’s presidency, the number of Americans receiving food stamps exploded. Today, one in five U.S. households are on food stamps. Worse still, we are taking two steps back for every step forward: For every new job that’s been created, two new EBT recipients (let’s call them food-stampers) are added to the food stamps dole.

  1. Loot, pay the consequences.

  2. Call me a racist, but I bet the vast majority of these ‘shoppers’ were black.
As a white man, and yes I’m proud of my heritage, I am fed up with this crap
And good for Gov Bobby Jindal ! I don’t, you don’t, we don’t owe these lazy, shiftless people a dime ! nada, zip, NOTHING ! Put their lazy asses to work or they can starve !

    • Photos and videos of the Walmart stores in Louisiana that day indeed show that the “shoppers” or looters were mainly, if not all black.
To make an empirical observation that the majority of the food stamps looters were black is not being racist. It’s an accurate factual description.

  3. The next thing that should be done after they take their entitlement, is that they should all be prosecuted sent to jail for welfare fraud!

  4. Governor Jindal is one surprising man. He has the courage to stand up to an incredibly corrupt population.

  5. Friggin’ hell yeah! Bobby for President…a man with a sack.

  6. Oh how long before the department of injustice comes in forces Bobby and Co. to change their minds?? I will be watching this closely. Hopefully it actually happens and people are punished!

  7. Instead of dumbass holder going after someone that is enforcing the law go after the deadbeats that robbed these stores. Another thing they could go after is these deadbeats that cruise the stores looking for people with full carts and offer to pay for their items with their welfare cards for cash to buy their drugs. When this happened to me I didn’t think quick enough and blew my stack with a verbal repremand that the whole store knew about and he left. The next time , the Wife and I talked it over, I’ll let them walk up to the checkout and he will stay behind and call the police. It’s bad enough we tax-payers foot the bill for these bums but I’ll be damned if I pay twice. Don’t get me wrong, there are people that need assistance and I would never want to see a senior or a child go hungry. Alot of times when I see a homeless person on the road I will turn around and find a place to get a sandwich and a drink and take it to them. What’s sad is alot of times they are afraid of us when we pull up to give it to them. Just the look in their eyes of appreciation knowing that someone cares gives them a boost of hope. But there are scammers out their so be careful.

  8. FINALLY! In the words of my old Quaker Great-Grandmother (and curiously….Barack Obama’s pastor 🙂 ALL OLD CROWS COME HOME TO ROOST! In the words of my Catholic-Baptist-Presbyterian Psychologist hubby (a lot of ground covered!)….”There’s no such thing as a FREE lunch!”

  9. Thank you Dr. Eowyn for this amazing post. Good for Governor Bobby! There is cause and effect and people will pay for their looting attempts. I don’t doubt that this evil administration will harass him.
