Leading Catholic magazine retracts endorsement of Judge Kavanaugh

A leading Catholic magazine, America: The Jesuit Review, has withdrawn its endorsement of embattled Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh — a devout lifelong Catholic with a flawless legal and judicial record, who had been vetted and investigated by the FBI six times.

On September 27, 2018, after the Senate Judiciary Committee’s Kavanaugh/Blasey Ford hearing, America published a piece titled, “The Editors: It is time for the Kavanaugh nomination to be withdrawn,” stating that whereas the magazine’s editors previously had endorsed Judge Kavanaugh based on his strong textualist viewpoint and solid “legal credentials,” the allegations against him have led the editors to withdraw their endorsement.

The reason is that although the editors “have no special insight into who is telling the truth” and “even if the credibility of the allegation has not been established beyond a reasonable doubt,” nevertheless, in the judgment of the magazine’s editors, “this nomination is no longer in the best interests of the country.”

According to The Conservative Brief, Sam Sawyer, a member of America’s editorial board and the Society of Jesus, told Vox that the decision to rescind Kavanaugh’s endorsement reflected, among other moral and constitutional concerns, a wider interest in ensuring that abuse victims are taken seriously because the Church has a “particular sensitivity to what’s going on in the wider society with the #MeToo movement.”

Put simply, America magazine has caved into the bullying tactics of the Left and, by so doing, is helping to ensure that the Left, having been successful, will continue to deploy underhanded tactics in the future.

Call me cynical, but what surprises me is that America magazine actually had endorsed Judge Kavanaugh to begin with, given Wikipedia‘s description of the magazine:

America is a national weekly magazine published by the Jesuits of the United States and headquartered in midtown Manhattan….

The publication was founded in 1909 in New York City and the Jesuits still maintain and publish the weekly magazine…. With its Jesuit affiliation, America has been described by The Washington Post as “a favourite of Catholic liberal intellectuals“.[1]

Under the leadership of [former editor in chief Thomas] Reese from 1998 to 2005, the magazine has been known for publishing articles and opinion pieces taking positions contrary to official Catholic teaching or discipline on matters such as homosexuality, priestly celibacy, birth control, and the abortion debate….

In 2009, under the leadership of Drew Christiansen, the editorial board gave support to an invitation for U.S. President Barack Obama to receive an honorary degree at the [Catholic] University of Notre Dame, which was controversial after directives from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops discouraged pro-choice politicians and activists from being honored at Catholic universities.

America‘s retraction of its endorsement speaks more about the magazine and the Catholic Church than about Judge Kavanaugh.

  1. The “Catholic” Church is also for the evil Kalergi Plan and made disparaging remarks against candidate & President Donald Trump for wanting to build a wall to protect our environment, citizens, economy, culture, society, & nation.. Candidate & President Trump pointed out that the Vatican has wall protecting it………….Mel Gibson & the Traditional Catholics are correct and were right all along as more & more revelations come forth. The current Pope needs to go

  2. I saw an article on a Christian website yesterday about Judge Kavanaugh’s wife, Ashley. She is from Abilene, Texas, and is a strong Christian woman. She is asking others to pray Psalm 40 with her.

    Notice especially verses 12-17:

12 For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.

13 Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me: O Lord, make haste to help me.

14 Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.

15 Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.

16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The Lord be magnified.

17 But I am poor and needy; yet the Lord thinketh upon me: thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying, O my God.

  3. “America‘s retraction of its endorsement speaks more about the magazine and the Catholic Church than about Judge Kavanaugh.”

Couldn’t agree more with this statement. Not that the Catholic leadership is serious about getting rid of pedophiles in the church, either.

Kavanaugh should wear this retraction as a badge of honor.

    • “Put simply, America magazine has caved into the bullying tactics of the Left and, by so doing, is helping to ensure that the Left, having been successful, will continue to deploy underhanded tactics in the future.”

Although, I don’t see this as bullying, but instead, a revelation of their true colors, undermining the government of the country they’re in, and demonstrating their true allegiance to the pope.

  4. the church of pedophilia chimes in

  5. Official Catholicism today: protect homosexual sex criminals, fire burner of homosexual flag.

    Pattern recognition, anybody?

  6. Considering the skeletons that exist in their closet, I take their opinion the same way I do when anyone from Hollyweird speaks…

  7. The Catholic church is a church full of hypocrites starting at the top. If the pope thinks Trump is bad for wanting a border wall, then he should tear down the wall surrounding the Vatican and allow the murderous Muslims in or the hordes of vagabonds who want to . I see many people go to church, clap their hands, sing, and pray and then go out and vote for the demonic democrats such as Pelosi and Biden who favor mayhem, abortion, homosexuality, and pedophilia under the name of tolerance.. These people should be flushed out and excommunicated. All of them are two faced hypocrites.

  8. Just as well. Catholicism has very little room to discuss what is in the best interest of the nation. Clean your own house first and I will check back with you to see if your opinion interests me. Do not lose faith Judge Kavanaugh. Some of us will not abandon you.

  9. Bella Dodd testified that the Communists sent in over 1100 pedophile (Democrats) into the Catholic Church
(Borrowed from Cera on Cathinfo with thanks)

“In the early 1950s, Mrs. Bella Dodd provided detailed explanations of the Communist subversion of the Church. Speaking as a former high ranking official of the American Communist Party, Mrs. Dodd said: “In the 1930s we put eleven hundred men into the priesthood in order to destroy the Church from within.” The idea was for these men to be ordained and progress to positions of influence and authority as Monsignors and Bishops. She stated that: “Right now they are in the highest places in the Church” — where they were working to bring about change in order to weaken the Church’s effectiveness against Communism. She also said that these changes would be so drastic that “you will not recognise the Catholic Church.” Dodd gave testimony on communist infiltration of Church and state before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee in the 1950s.

On Tuesday, August 5, 1952 she publicly announced that on April 7th of the same year, she was received back into the Roman Catholic Church. Not being able to secure her baptismal certificate from Italy after inquiry, she was therefore conditionally baptized by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York.”

  10. Who cares what they say? They have dug their grave already…..it’s only a matter of time before they fall into it.
    God HELP our country.

  11. I hardly think the Catholic Church is in a position to be making value judgments about ANYBODY’S moral behavior. And that extends all the way up to the Pope.

Clean out your own Augean stables before you start pointing fingers.

  12. The America article is beyond belief. I just skimmed it, but the gist is that it’s reasonable for people of good will to assume the worst about Judge Kavanaugh and to destroy him and his family on the grounds that sexual assault against women is a serious issue. These are evil people using the RCC as cover, turning 500 years of the Jesuits’ contribution to the rules of evidence on its head to advance the totalitarian LGBT hell requiring the emasculation of men, condemnation of manhood, while keeping abortion the law of the land.

The Jesuits, going all the way back to the Renaissance, had determinative things to say about the reliability of witnesses, in turn citing human experience as wide as ancient India and the Talmud, and that’s been thrown out the window to destroy a man and his family because they’re traditional Christians. In this case, where people of good will with no malice toward Dr Ford would naturally assume her testimony was as fake as her fake little girl speech during her questioning and for her faking the diction and composition skills of a ten-year-old in that written accusation.

Instead of commonsensically presuming she’s obviously unreliable on the basis of her little girl speech, demeanor, and writing, or more likely a very bad actor based on her record of publicly abasing herself in a “pussy hat” to show her hatred of men like Kavanaugh, instead America insists she be given equal credibility with a scholarly judge of known moral impeccability. In the long term, if there’s a loss of credibility, at least it’ll attach itself to the Jesuits where it belongs.

    • Allow me to insert a few words into your sentence:

“the gist is that it’s reasonable for people of good will to assume the worst about Judge Kavanaugh and to destroy him and his family on the grounds that ALLEGED sexual assault against women WITH NO EVIDENCE OR CORROBORATING WITNESS(ES) is a serious issue.”

  13. Maybe “America” magazine needs to rethink their politics. Namely, they shouldn’t DO politics. I quit reading NCR years ago for the same reason.

Until Francis is gone there are much bigger fish to fry:

The Church has a lot of housecleaning to do.

  14. Yes indeed, ExC – tear down that Vatican wall!
Release the cockroaches to the public. Send them out in their underwear so we can hold a “diseased poultry pecking contest” with live birds donated by the Top 10 chicken producers.

THEN – OPEN THE LIBRARY DOORS. We know the 17 mile length library contains ancient manuscripts stored floor to ceiling revealing our true origins. We know “The One and Only Great Almighty” provided a world of abundance giving us “primary water” and “abiotic oil”.

We’re sick of your EVIL lies with nonsense words like “fossil fuel” used by Rockefeller’s agents over 100 years ago to bamboozle international scientists attending a meeting in Switzerland. The priest craft monsters creating artificial cycles of scarcity war, death and destruction are finished.

Interestingly, Kavanaugh went to a Jesuit High School…
He still gives a lot of credit to his up-bringing to having attended it.
Maybe they were afraid it reflect back on them if he were proven guilty?

  17. And what about the decades long allegations of young men and women? You can’t have it both ways and expect to have credibility or integrity.
