Intolerance: Man drops out of Seattle City Council race due to “activist hate machine”

Back in September, Christopher Rufo declared that he was going to run for Seattle City Council, District 6. He was going to challenge incumbent Mike O’Brien. Rufo started a CrowdPac page and had raised $12,760 of his $15,000 goal.

I read about Rufo in September and recall him saying he was “socially progressive” and “fiscally conservative.” (I can’t remember where I read that so I don’t have a link to that information.)

Turns out that not being 100% progressive will not get you anywhere near winning a council seat in Seattle. MyNorthwest.com reports that on Wednesday Rufo dropped out of the race. Excerpts from their report:

“When Rufo first made the announcement that he was running, someone on Facebook commented that he seemed like a nice guy, but had been at an event in town thrown by a conservative group, which automatically made him suspicious. Does attendance at a conservative event now disqualify you? What if you attended an event of a conservative you disagreed with just to hear what they had to say?

Christopher Rufo said that he wanted a new way of doing business, a new method — and now he’s already out. On Wednesday, he sent an email out to members of his campaign saying that he’s got to leave. It’s not because he wants to leave; it’s because of the “tolerant” atmosphere in Seattle. (The “tolerant” description was sarcasm.)

I had hoped that this would be a campaign of ideas, but I quickly discovered that the activists in this city have no interest in ideas. Since the campaign launch, they have harassed and threatened my family nonstop. I was prepared to take the heat, but unfortunately, they have focused their hatred on my wife and children. They’ve made vile racist attacks against my wife, attempted to get her fired from Microsoft, and threatened sexual violence. They have even posted hateful messages to my 8-year-old son’s school Facebook page. I know that as the race progresses, the activists will ratchet up their hate-machine and these attacks will intensify significantly.”

Here’s more of Rufo’s statement from his Facebook page:

“I’m deeply disappointed by this turn of events and hope I have not let down my supporters as well. I’ve been overwhelmed by the excitement, love, and generosity from hundreds of people all over the Puget Sound. I know in my heart that our cause is just and our ideas would make Seattle a better place. But my primary responsibility is to make sure my family is healthy, happy, and safe. That’s not possible in our current political climate, which has been overtaken by polarization and the ever-present threat of violence.

I’ve learned that our problem here in Seattle is much deeper than the city council’s policies—we have created a culture of intolerance that is deeply destructive to the common good. I plan to spend the next few months reflecting on this experience and charting a way forward in a series of essays. I hope that some positive benefit can come out of this disappointment.

Over the next two weeks, I will be refunding all of our campaign donors and will personally cover the costs incurred since the launch of the campaign. I’m deeply grateful for all of you who have contributed and hope you can reroute your hard-earned money to other worthy candidates in the city.

I’m honored to have had your support.

While Seattle runs amok with homelessness, drug users, prostitution and increasing crime, here was a man willing to step up to the plate offering solutions that the current council cannot deliver. Yet because he was spotted at a “conservative event” he must be destroyed. No differing opinions allowed in progressive, “tolerant” Seattle!

Instead of considering a new, fresh approach to solving your multitude of problems, the open-minded progressives try to take down his family.

I’m fresh out of empathy for Seattle citizens. May you reap all the consequences you deserve for being so close-minded and spiteful against anyone who dares to attend an event of the opposite political spectrum.

  1. On the other left coast in Bridgeport, Ct, pro-lifers praying silently in front of some abortuary some years ago started getting blood-curdling phone calls—all from women—threatening even young children with death right after employees of the place were seen taking down license plate numbers. This could only have happened if one or more persons in the DMV or police were confident they could give up the addresses of the pro-lifers, knowing they’d be harrassed, with no fear of being charged with a crime.

We shouldn’t be surprised at any of this because despite the sheep-dipped appearance of today’s Lexus-driving, college-educated leftist, the bottom line is that they’re driven by a sanguinary hatred of Christianity. The irony is that while the left marches under the banner of LGBT-ism for this reason, the cuckservative Republicans and jellyfish on Fox News are giving our country away by asking election-stealing leftist thugs to give civility one more chance. It’s so bad now that men viewers of Fox News are being told what to think and do, which is effectively to do nothing, and by a new crop of young female talking heads who voices are so shrill they sound like someone who’s just breathed in helium.

    • I grew up and lived and worked in Fairfield County, CT until I retired in 2014. I’m now 2,750 miles to the west and the only thing I regret about leaving CT is that I didn’t do it 40 years ago.

When God decides to give the State of Connecticut an enema, He is going to stick the tube in Bridgeport (even before He sticks it in Hartford).
Bridgeport was the first city in the US to declare bankruptcy. Politicians came from California to learn how it was done.
Bridgeport was the city where the Mayor (Ganim) and Chief of Police were arrested by the FBI in a drug-bust sting. They tried to claim they were running their own sting operation at the time. They went to prison. Served their time. Ganim wants to be mayor again.
Several years ago a tornado went through the upper end of Main Street in Bridgeport. It did multiple millions worth of improvements.
There are parts of Bridgeport where the police are afraid to go (Father Panic Village).

What really angers me is that CT used to be like what my current home is now which is worth defending. Once I established my residency here, I bought a new Springfield Armory M1A (semi only M14). I kept the box it came in because of the sticker “Not legal in Connecticut”.

  2. I’ve learned I could no longer do anything constructive in California concerning politics so I moved out of the state. Maybe he will come to the same conclusion.

  3. Spineless scrunt!

    • I don’t blame him…

If you’ve ever received personal threats – let alone threats against your wife and children – you must be VERY cautious. Been there, done that (with personal death threats).

Makes one want to go low-key and off the radar. Too many whackos out there…

  4. Like Detroit, you let them go until they reap everything they’ve sown. Which doesn’t take long once you’re set up to fail.

  5. You can’t swim in a septic tank without smelling like shit… Now New York State is fully Democrat at the State level…. Andrew Cuomo has both the Assembly and Senate so he can run rough shod over the districts that do not toe his Liberal line… Andrew is living proof that Mario shot it in the back door at least once….

  6. You are already in the middle of what may be the world’s first asymmetric civil war.

  7. I guess the truth just hit the poor guy between the eyes. He really isn’t a progressive at all. I think young people think they are since it sounds cool, then the truth sets in. Working for a party that thinks threats are normal puts a bad taste in ones mouth.

  8. The version I have heard of Watertender’s remark goes:
You can’t bathe in a septic tank without coming out smelling like shit, unless you’re a liberal, in which case you’ve polluted the septic tank!

  9. The long-term strategy is to give the Marxists what they want in their own enclaves. Help them be Marxist; in CA, CT, VT, NH, NY, ME, OR.
After they fall, pray for them and no more. “Wipe the dust from your feet”.

    • The problem is the “Progressives” don’t stay in their enclaves, but move out of dysfunctional states like California to infect otherwise “red” states. Oregon and Washington fell early. Now it’s Nevada, Idaho and I suspect Arizona. Texas is in the Demonrats’ bull’s-eye. If Demonrats gain a majority in Texas, since Demonrats already control the 2 other big (in electoral votes) states of California and New York, then it’s over for the GOP as far as presidential elections go.

  10. Yikes! Sounds almost as bad as swatting. In which deranged/dishonest/etc candidates for office call emergency services at night, from untraceable numbers, give political opponents home addresses, and claim to be armed and ready to do harm. Services show up, break down the door… wake the innocently sleeping family, who likely drop out of the race.. best case scenario.
