Insulting? California lowering bar exam standards in order to pass more minority lawyers

A rather insulting headline:

The article in the LA Times states the California Supreme Court agreed to lower the passing score for the exam, a victory for law school deans who have long hoped the change would raise the number of Black and Latino people practicing law.

UCLA School of Law Dean Jennifer L. Mnookin, a longtime supporter of lowering the passing score said, “There is absolutely no evidence that shows having a higher score makes for better lawyers. There is significant evidence that it reduces the diversity of the bar.”

And of course: “Whether the exam is culturally biased has been a question for law journals over the years, and critics have written that it fails to measure the real abilities required to be good lawyers.”

When one seeks an attorney they may base their decision on if the person is a member of the “diversity” team. Or they may seek one through recommendations, legal expertise/area of practice and their “win” record. But that’s just my white-privileged opinion.

Why even require a degree or an exam when performance no longer matters?

As an attorney I think it is great, going to make winning cases that much easier dealing with morons. The sad part is the black attorney that is brilliant and would have qualified will be looked upon as only getting in because of affirmative action and passing because of lower standards.

Now your handle makes perfect sense to me. 🙂 Great for an attorney! My 2 brilliant/wonderful dau-in-laws are attorneys. For one, it was not easy, as she worked in food service to pay her way through undergrad & then a CA law school & was mostly on her own as far as family emotional support (b/c she was “only the girl”). Every time something like this happens (& dumbing down of almost everything just keeps on a’coming) I feel so sorry for students who worked so hard, when the next guy is going to get a “pass” on some of… Read more »

i have a problem with little people [working poor ] getting a low cost lawyer or a public defender who finished at the bottom 10% of their class. America once was the greatest country in the world where there most people had a fair chance at justice. now it is only the rich get a fair trial. try taking on the federal gov. or big business.you will end up like GEN. FLYNN or worst

I don’t think this is anything new; it just codifies what they’ve been doing under the radar. How else would idjits like Kammie Harris, Max Waters, and Xavi Bacteria (et al.) get the top-level jobs they have in California? Passing a state bar in order to practice law there is EXACTLY what is needed to prove one has an intimate knowledge of the laws of that state and how they apply to its citizens. Dumbing things down in order to make room for more incompetency is NOT the way to improve society. Either qualify by hard work and improved education… Read more »

Lower standards makes the population weaker, unable to compete with the rest of the world. Part of democrats efforts to create losers instead of winners. All the major battles are won in courts these days. California is producing a bunch of attorneys that will think they know the law. They will fail in the courtroom, Both in the state and outside of California. That is if they are allowed to practice law outside the state. When Kim Kardashian is able to get a law degree, they should start including them as prizes in boxes of Cracker Jack’s. Democrats are out… Read more »

Why bother with any of it, if you’re black or some ‘minority’, just show up, get a free certificate saying you are a lawyer, and poof, it’s done. Just like that sham “universal church of life” where you can print up your own ‘ministerial license’ for free.
I see this backfiring, just like affirmative action. Sadly it is a self-fulfilling prophecy, which will create real prejudice, as people will see a minority lawyer and just assume they’re inept since the bar is lowered for them. And they’ll probably be right.

Ironically lowering standards like this — and it has been occurring since the start of “affirmative action” some 50-ish years ago — promotes “racism.” That is because the system makes it rational for a consumer to avoid engaging the services of minorities in high skilled occupations such as medicine or law — where by definition things are “high stakes” for the consumer — because actuarially the odds are higher that the minority individuals reside in the lower half of the skill bell curve. At least until proven otherwise for select individuals. Collectively the “tail” of this rational perception lasts decades, i.e., the… Read more »

8 years ago, in 2012, U.S. medical schools had already begun giving “Affirmative Action”, i.e., race-based “preference” to Blacks and Hispanics. 🙁

The FAA also. See: https://fellowshipoftheminds.com/http-fellowshipoftheminds-com-2018-06-04-faa-endangers-public-safety-by-emphasizing-diversity-over-competence-in-selection-of-air-traffic-controllers

California has done away with SAT scores, opening up affirmative action and now lowering bar pass standards. Think about medical school and your doctor walking in who would never have gotten into medical school with his SAT, never would have gotten into medical school but due to his race flies thru and once in cannot be booted. Now open up mr. smith let me take a look!

It USED TO BE that you needed to be smart to be a lawyer BUT IN CALIFORNIA NO MORE! All will get a participation trophy. I fell sorry for the poor clown who ends up hiring one of these morons. It’s called the bar for a reason, if you are too stupid or incompetent to pass it then WHY would anyone want you as a lawyer???
