‘If gays don’t like it, they can choose another pasta’

DailyMail: Campaigners have called for a boycott of Barilla, the world’s biggest pasta maker, after the company said they would never feature gay people in their advertisements.

Company chairman Guido Barilla provoked outrage when he said that his idea of the ‘traditional families’ where the woman  played a central part was ‘sacred’.

If gay people didn’t like it they could eat another brand of pasta, he said.

He said: ‘I would never do a commercial with a homosexual family, not for lack of respect, but because I don’t think we are like them. ‘Ours is a traditional family where the woman  has a fundamental role. ‘

Mr. Barilla told Italian radio Radio 24: ‘Our  concept is not that of a gay family. ‘For us, the concept of the nuclear family is a fundamental value of the company.’

When the interviewer pointed out that gay people also eat pasta he said: ‘Okay, if they like our pasta and our branding let them eat it, otherwise they can choose another pasta. You can’t always please everyone. ‘

Mr Barilla also remarked that he was against gay adoption although he did support gay marriage.

The comments followed the launch of an initiative by Parliament Speaker, Laura Boldrini, on the role of women in advertising, in particular the prevalence of mothers serving the family at the  table.

Aurelio Mancuso, from the campaign group  Equality of Italy, called the remarks ‘an offensive provocation ‘ and demanded  an immediate boycott of Barilla products.

As a wave of Italian MPs threatened to resign in support of Silvio Berlusconi, openly gay parliamentarian Alessandro Zan said:  ‘I adhere to the boycott of Barilla and I urge other MPs, at least those who do  not resign, to do the same.‘

The comments caused a storm on the web with  Twitter #boicottabarilla (boycott Barilla) trending. Mr. Barilla later apologised saying he had  ‘maximum respect’ for gays.

Well I know what brand of pasta I’ll be buying from now on!

  1. Think Ill make pasta and a nice sauce for dinner tonight.

  2. Yeah, because this boycott will be just as effective as Chick-Fil-A’s! Oh, wait…my bad Chick-Fil-A actually made a profit during the last gay boycott. Darn!

  3. It is my all favorite Pasta! I’m just ” thrilla for Barilla”. What a wonderful company with great pasta and guts to take a stand against the politically correct goons.

  4. I’ve bought Barilla pasta before and, as long as Barilla continues its principled stance, Barilla will be the ONLY pasta I’ll buy in the future!

  5. That’s my pasta brand!!! I have and WILL always buy Barilla. Now I’ll just smile when I do!!

  6. Guess who’s Pasta I’m going to start using…If it pisses “those” folks off it can’t be all bad.

  7. I guess they will just have to make their “Pasta e fagioli” with another brand now.

  8. Good stuff!

  9. Thank you DCG for this revealing post. I always buy Barilla anyway, and I will continue to do so.

  10. Well then let them eat cake. I like Barilla. There is no requirement in the Constitution to accept their behavior, or accomodate them in any way. People don’t just change their ethics or morals to suit a segment of society.

  11. Here is the solution , we really do not care whether the gays like it or not . We really need to stop caring what they think, As a once popular supposedly bi- sexual said once WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE NOW . Same goes with atheist. If you do not like it go to California.

  12. I have used nothing but Barilla since it first hit our shores.

It’s the best pasta you can buy, and I will continue using it.

  13. I too am so sick of political correctness. There are a lot of companies out there that do not use gays (or promote gay marriage) in their advertising. Shall we boycott them all?

  14. I’ve never bought Barilla pasta but after reading this, I’m going to buy nothing but Barilla!

  15. I don’t buy Barilla regularly because of cost. I’ll be more likely to pay extra now for them supporting family values … but for it to be my ONLY brand … they would have to go all the way and NOT support gay marriage all together.

  16. I am a gay male who has always used barilla pasta I will continue to use it because it is the best.
