Huge mushroom cloud seen over Beijing, China

This is scary stuff.
Tara Kelly writes for The Huffington Post, June 17, 2012, that the Chinese government’s English-language newspaper, China Daily, reports that on June 14 a huge mushroom-like cloud was spotted over Beijing, closely resembling the explosion of an atomic bomb.
Footage of the mysterious cloud has been released on YouTube. One shows raw video of the haze taken from what appears to be a high-rise building, while another video is an edited version documenting the haze on June 14. Note how right next to the giant mushroom cloud are clear blue skies:

The yellow and green haze led Chinese authorities to advise residents to stay inside Monday, according to Agence France-Presse.
While rumors swarmed online about the cause of the unusual cloud, Chinese police arrested two internet users who said the pollution had been triggered by a chlorine leak at a chemical plant or an explosion at a steel refinery, notes The Economic Observer.
Meanwhile, government authorities told the official Xinhua news agency that straw burning was the cause and denied there had been any industrial accidents.
Air pollution is increasingly becoming a major problem in China, and the secretive Communist Party government is often accused of downplaying the severity of the problem in metropolitan areas.
Earlier this month, China demanded the U.S. Embassy in Beijing to stop publishing air pollution readings, saying it was against diplomatic conventions and the law.

  1. All due respect Hardnox, we need to pray for the welfare of the Chinese people. This is horrible what has happened to them. And their Communist party government will not allow open discussion of the problem of air pollution and any other related result. This is indeed frightening!

    • Remember that while looking with clear eyes at your own nation (and don’t confuse removing Obama from office with ‘change’… the evil is indemic and has been since long before Obama moved to D.C.).

After some googling and running this past a couple storm-chaser friends, the verdict seems to be that this is two weather phenomena combined into a stunning display… The big clue was the jet coming over the cloud base at 1:45, which allowed a decent judgement of the size and altitude of the cloud parts.
The larger cloud is a single storm cell centered on a cumulonimbus incus cloud (which can look a LOT like a mushroom cloud. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cumulonimbus-incus_mykonos.jpg ). The color effects come from low-density concentrations of ice crystals that got sucked up and flash-frozen, forming small prisms similar to the effect of cloud iridescence (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_iridescence ).
The final ingredient is the sun angle, which had to be just right to get the intense color of the first part of the video, but wanes as the angle changed by just a couple degrees near the end of the video.
I would have LOVED to see this up close… as long as I didn’t actually have to go to China to see it! Thanks for posting!

  4. I would be very concerned if I saw something like this in my area. Kind of neat looking, but scary!

Oh yay? THIS is what China has to offer the world? Deadly air, censorship, repression, a bullet to the head, and soup made from bird spit? I for one welcome our new Smoggy Overlords… NOT!!!
