Hollyweird Hypocrite: Bette Midler on how she leads an eco-friendly lifestyle

DailyMail: She has carved a name for herself in Hollywood, thanks to her roles in The Rose, For the Boys and The First Wives Club. But off-screen Bette Midler appears to be a strong environmental activist, so much so that the American star doesn’t have any plastic belongings in her home.
‘The whole world has become disposable,’ she confessed in an interview with The Telegraph newspaper. ‘People use things once, then they throw it away. I grew up really frugal,’ she added.  ‘It was the end of the war and people didn’t have anything. They had to take care of what they had.’
The 68-year-old actress is well-known for her long-standing and passionate commitment to the environment. Earlier this year, Bette proposed a small fee on disposable plastic bags in the States.
According to the New York Observer, the actress’ restoration project asked Council members in New York City to support the bill in order to reduce the number of plastic bags.
The Hocus Pocus star has always been vocal about her opinions, last month she took to Twitter to write: ‘I wish America would spend even half as much time complaining about plastics in our oceans as we do about actresses’ plastic surgery.’ ‘And the worst part is, 7 million tons of trash 80% of which is plastic, ends up on the oceans,’ she went on to say.
Meanwhile, the actress and singer recently announced she is set to return with a new album and live tour – her first one since over a decade. Bette will kick off her mega-tour in May 8 in Hollywood, before jetting off to the UK in July.
Eco-friendly?  Why a tour that jets her around the US and the world, check!
Eco-friendly? How about a lavish tri-plex Manhattan residence, check!
midlerEco-friendly? Why a second, part-time home in Beverly Hills, check! (The singer, actress and comedienne, lives here part-time. She purchased the 4-bed, 4-bath, 3,785 sq ft home in August of 2002 for an undisclosed amount for money.)
Eco-friendly? A home in her native Hawaii in which the “environmental activist” cut down more than 230 trees around one of her properties on the island of Kauai without a permit. (The staff of the Board of Land and Natural Resources recommended $6,500 in fines for having the trees felled and for building a graded road without permits required for the land zoned for conservation use.)
Well, sounds like she’s committed to her own special kind of “frugality” and “eco-friendly lifestyle”.

  1. Excellent, DCG, for exposing yet another Hollywood “celebrity” whose narcissism blinds her from seeing herself clearly — a stinking hypocrite. I’m especially aggrieved over her cutting down more than 230 trees around one of her properties on the island of Kauai w/out a permit (or even with a permit).

  2. Great post! It’s certainly interesting to note how Ms Midler looks in her bathing suit, wrinkly, sagging skin and all . . . yet look at the poster touting her new world tour. Almost looks like the woman on the poster could be her daughter! Isn’t air brushing a wonderful thing. Why would one person need that many homes–yet rail at others use of the world’s resources. Just another hypocrite who wants us to do as she says, not as she does!

  3. Just another Hollywood hypocrite with the attitude of “do as I say, not as I do!” Same reason why Al Gore’s message was lost before it started. It was reported that he used more energy to maintain one of his homes than ten families use in a year. Same ole same ole.

  4. Another “blow hard mouth piece” from Hellywood ! She must have taught Gwyneth Paltrow, all the finer points about sounding stupid to the world. She defines the word “hypocrite” by destroying trees! She is a “plastic bag”.

  5. These people are such disgusting humans. So she’s the one that has caused people to have to buy the plastic bags at grocery stores in progressive states. Easy for her, she’s rich, some people are having enough trouble paying for what they need to eat, this is an added burden on them but I’m sure Ms. M could care less.

  6. Great post, DCG!
(And please pardon me while I stifle the urge to vomit, just thinking of Bette and her idiotic tribe.)

  7. vile and disgusting….completely full of herself and hot air (uh oh global warming!)

  8. She is no different from the global elitists within our government and throughout the world who think they have the right to tell the rest of us how to live, yet the rules do not apply to them.

  9. Reblogged this on "OUR WORLD".

  10. When SHE walks the walk, and gets the rest of Hollyweird to do the same,THEN her word may carry some weight. Until then, though, she doesn’t rate any of my attention.

  11. I always thought she was a native NYer. Now I’m disappointed. She may be recycling plastic bags, but it wasn’t cool (or well known) what she did in Hawaii. Shame, shame, shame…

  12. If the Divine Miss M has no plastics in her home, does she have a radio? Laptop? Clock? New refrigerator?
I think the fluoride in the water is getting to her! (Well, at least she’s not a TREEHUGGER!)
