Heartless Public Servant

Some people should never be trusted in an emergency

I think we have all been stung by an encounter with a bureaucrat with no concern. When things get really bad it’s hard to say the perfect thing or identify the most urgent need. But this incident stands as a reminder of human failure in a pinch.

Let’s keep our balance, and pray for this woman’s loved ones, and for the dispatcher, who is likely in the emotional crisis of her life. But on second thought, that dispatcher crossed a bright neon line in the sand into genuine callousness and outright cruelty. I will pray for her, but mostly pray for the poor victim and her loved ones.

Update (Sept. 4, 2019):

Donna Reneau is the name of this dispatcher, whose cruelty and callousness directly led to the death-by-drowning of 47-year-old Debra Stevens. It was Reneau’s last day working as a dispatcher; she had given her two-weeks’ notice, but that doesn’t mean she can’t be held accountable as interim Fort Smith Police Chief Danny Baker said in the video. Incredibly, Baker said that even if it wasn’t Reneau’s last day on the job, what she said to Stevens was merely rude and would not warrant her being fired. Stevens’ family should file a negligent-death lawsuit against both Donna Reneau and the city of Fort Smith.

I couldn’t make it past the 1:35 mark. That dispatcher SHOULD NEVER had been hired in the first place. Not one ounce of empathy in her response. NOT ONE.

Absolutely disgusting.

Was the dispatcher fired?

The dispatcher couldn’t be fired because she had already given her 2-weeks notice. She took that 911 call on her last day of work.

Still, the police chief can doing something by putting a black mark on that dispatcher’s job record so that it will follow her when she applies for jobs in the future.

I read of the story, and, I will tell you, it would be almost impossible to believe if we haven’t heard of stories almost as bad.

I don’t remember of anything like this happening in my native NYC.

Bureaucracies tend to attract sadist, and many bureaucrats are tin-eared. I almost drowned myself, and I can almost imagine what that poor woman endured.

I hope this 911 operator never gets another job in her life.

What job would she be qualified for? Maybe for an insurance company denying claims of people who need life-saving treatment

My gut tells me the dispatcher is just fine with her callouse behavior. I get the sense she suffers from a superiority complex.

Exactly the kind of people who are attracted to the “helping professions”

Bureaucracies, systems, are heartless by design. The point of them is to compartmentalize all human feelings, fit them into bureaucratized structures. I saw this very frequently in the mental health system. It’s not uncommon to see clinicians and others in the “helping professions” completely bereft of empathy or compassion. They simply detach and let “the process” take over. They avoid guilt that way and say they are just doing their jobs. This dispatcher demonstrated the sensitivity of a rock. Being that this was Arkansas I imagine she would call herself a Christian, but if so, a false Christian. I’m inclined… Read more »

what I heard was racism and callous disregard for life- surely they knew about this racist 911 operator before this call, this is the result of hiring based on affirmative action garbage. I pray that she receives God’s justice and revenge for her words and actions on that call

911 operator is Donna Reneau, the incident occurred on her LAST day working as dispatcher, she had put in her notice and her supervisor has said she won’t be investigated since she is not longer working for 911- everyone now knows who she is

Thank you for this information. I’ve updated TrailDust’s post with the name and a pic of this evil woman.

I hadn’t heard till just now whether the lady in need actually drowned. If this miss reneau has a conscience, her own words should haunt her for a long,….long, time.

So the woman actually drowned. Very, very sad. This Reneau creature looks to be afflicted with mongolism. Or someone struck her in the face with a flatiron when she was an infant. That might account for her sociopathic personality traits. The police chief is complict for trying to cover his and the city’s ass. I hope the family sues the f..k out of them
