Gisele Bundchen named best green celebrity
NY Daily News: Gisele Bündchen was named Best Green International Celebrity at this year’s Green Awards at a ceremony at the National History Museum in London on November 24.
The 31-year-old Brazilian supermodel, who has starred in campaigns for labels such as Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and Versace, is also involved in numerous environmental campaigns.
She became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in 2009 and has supported numerous environmental initiatives such as the Drop of Water Movement (Movimento Gota D’Agua), which aims to prevent the construction of the Bel Monte Dam in Brazil, a dam which campaigners claim will destroy large swathes of the Amazonian rainforest.
Gisele commented “I am blessed to have grown up in a family that embraced the importance of nature and community coexisting in harmony. My career in the public eye has given me the opportunity to raise awareness about important socio-environmental causes in hopes of promoting a more conscious relationship with our environment.”
And how conscious is she of her relationship with the environment? So much so that she and her husband Tom Brady, New England Patriots’ quarterback, are building a $20 million, 22,000 square foot mansion in California. It boasts an elevator, lagoon-shaped pool, wine cellar, parking for six cars, weights room and a covered bridge connecting two buildings.
This is the same person who suggests on her website that one way to cut down on energy is to take stairs. “In addition to exercising, you save the electric power of the elevators,” she says. But of course it is different if you have your own elevator in your home.
I don’t mind the fact that she is part of the 1% and wants to build a lavish home. What I do mind is the hypocrisy of being an advocate for the environment while at the same time practicing a different tone.
Remember, do as I say, not as I do.
