Nanny State Madness: California‘s Proposed ’Fitted Sheet’ Law

By Mike Opelka – Patriot Action Network – August 15, 2011
When California’s elected officials come back from their month-long recess they face a mountain of proposed legislation (almost 900 bills are lined up and waiting), including a new law (SB432) that would require hotels to eliminate flat sheets. Not having fitted sheets on hotel beds would now be a crime in California. This is not a joke. . .
California, the state trying to deal with a massive $26 BILLION dollar debt, is considering a law that some hospitality industry experts claim would add an estimated $15 to $30 million dollars in costs to an already hurting hotel industry. The low-end estimate of fifteen million is the projected cost to purchase new fitted sheets for the 550,000 hotel beds in the state. Of course the hospitality industry is claiming that these added costs will hurt their business and put jobs at risk.

  1. It is simply insane!!!

  2. I notice this piece of nonsense specifies lodging establishments and omits hospitals, rehabilitation centers, etc. Doesn’t OSHA care about people performing housekeeping duties in healthcare facilities? I smell something that’s got a whiff of the SEIU about it.

    • Union-backed bill LTG. “The way union leaders see it, such sheets will help ease the backbreaking work that defines a housekeeper’s job. The bill also calls for the use of long-handled mops so that housekeepers do not have to get down on their hands and knees to clean bathroom floors.”

      • To be consistent, they should BAN ALL FLAT SHEETS in the State of California, making it a crime to sell or own a flat sheet with a fine of $1,000 per sheet. Can you see “sheet inspectors” checking the store shelves and doing random spot checks of linen closets ?
They could make a big whoop-di-doo offering a bounty on all fitted sheets turned in to the government; Walmart coupon towards the purchase of 180 ct fitted sheet in a range of decorator colors.
Why not? It worked on Cash for Clunkers! ROFL

    • True, SEIU folk probably aren’t the kind to be involved in medical-anything.

  3. Democrat voters are lazy and can’t make hospital corners.

    • Anon,
I think lowtechgrannie is onto something. It’s not Democrat voters who are lazy and can’t make hospital corners. It’s the Purple Shirts of Obama and the Demonrats — SEIU (Service Employees International Union) hotel workers who are too lazy! LOL

  4. Along w/this being insane, why do they have 900! bills? Betcha only .02% of them make any valid sense…

  5. Second hand smoke

Thats how anal retentive they really are.
