Gov. Newsom pulling National Guard from border to fight “real threats”

From SF Gate: Gov. Gavin Newsom will withdraw most of the California National Guard troops who were deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border last year, saying the state needs them to prepare for wildfires and fight drug trafficking rather than bolster President Trump’s response to a “manufactured” immigration crisis.

Newsom said he will rescind authorization Monday for the deployment of the Guard troops, which Trump requested and then-Gov. Jerry Brown approved in April. Brown extended the deployment in September, and the state’s 360 Guard troops were scheduled to stay on the border through March.

Brown declared last year that “California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration laws.” Newsom’s office, however, said the troops were operating cameras along the border, doing vehicle maintenance and performing other jobs that would normally fall to federal agencies, freeing up resources for U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Voice of San Diego, an online news outlet, reported in August that in at least two cases, Border Patrol agents apprehended immigrants crossing into the state illegally after being notified by California National Guard troops.

Newsom’s withdrawal order comes one day before he delivers his first State of the State address at 11 a.m. Tuesday. According to excerpts of the speech released by his office, the governor will say that “the border ‘emergency’ is a manufactured crisis. And California will not be part of this political theater.

“Which is why I have given the National Guard a new mission. They will refocus on the real threats facing our state.” The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Under the new order Newsom intends to sign, 110 Guard troops now at the border will be redeployed to help the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection with fire prevention efforts, and 100 troops will conduct antidrug trafficking intelligence operations, including screening cargo at points of entry. Newsom will also request funding from the U.S. Defense Department to expand the state Guard’s antidrug task force by at least 150 members.

“This is our answer to the White House: No more division, xenophobia or nativism,” Newsom plans to say in his State of the State speech.

  1. And the winner of the Bruce Jenner look-alike contest is . . . Gavin Newsom.

  2. !!!!!!! (Surprised? Not really.)

  3. This commie ass —- is hellbent to drive this state into the ground. First order of the day, ever day appears to be for him to worry about illegals, and illegals only- screw the taxpaying, law abiding citizens. And what a phony excuse to remove the troops. There is no way any National Guard troops can do much of anything right now as a good portion of the state has been, and continues to be slogged under heavy rains. The first danger will come once things have dried out which won’t be until June at least. Fire breaks and brush clearing can only be done in the late spring after the rains have stopped. Seems like it would make more sense to stop the drug dealers at the border too, but then we know this is not his real concern. His only concern is grandstanding against Trump so he thinks he will make a name for himself and run for Pres in 2024. This guy has to take the prize for being the most vain, and hollow politician Ca has ever produced. Kamala Harris runs a good second behind him.

  4. Well, the illegals are their future as no one else will vote for them. As to the troops, they normally belong to the Governor unless they are called up for an emergency by the President. That’s easy. Call them up.

Next, send the federal marshals to pick up the clown. The President is saying we have a national emergency. These governors are performing traitorous acts. Not only should they lose funding and control of their National Guard, they should be prosecuted.

This has gone on too long. He should immediately issue the order and send them back to the border. Checkmate.

  5. It is becoming clearer every day why Kimberly divorced this sorry asswipe. But, fear not, he said he was going to use the troops for better chores. That must mean he will use them to clean up the disaster that once was beautiful San Fransico.

  6. So Pelosi’s nephew will be calling back the National Guard from the southern border where there is no wall (or the wall is easily breached) to “refocus on the real threats affecting the state” by having them stand at the border checkpoint to screen for drugs so now the drug runners will go back to where the Guard is no longer stationed as they use those routes again. Along with guns and human traffickers it will all make their way back to our sanctuary cities. Thus Hollywood is elated to have their drug supply flowing again, while police have to reprioritize in order to handle all the violent crimes, murders, and robberies that are directly attributed to drugs flowing around and through Pelosi’s nephew’s political decisions.
