Geologists’ discovery of fault line supports Mount of Olives as site of Second Coming

Zechariah 14 is the 14th and the last chapter of the Book of Zechariah in the Old Testament. This book contains the prophecies spoken by the prophet Zechariah, whose prophecies began in the second year of Darius, king of Persia (520 BC).

Coincidentally, his feast day is today, February 8, in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar.

This is the apocalyptic prophecy in Zechariah 14:1-9:

A day of the Lord is coming….

Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south…. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. It will be a unique day—a day known only to the Lord—with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light….

The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.

What the prophet Zechariah described is the end of all things, when our Lord will come for a second and last time.

On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west

So it’s most fascinating that geologists have discovered an earthquake fault line running east to west right through the Mount of Olives in the heart of Jerusalem.

From “The Geography of the Mount of Olives” by Sefi Ben Yosef:

The Mount of Olives is a long and narrow mountain that stretches along the eastern edge of Jerusalem in a general north-south direction. Its summit lies in the center of the village of Abu Tor, at an altitude of about 820 meters above sea level, and approximately 100 meters above the Old City of Jerusalem….

The fault line from west to east, in the southern portion of the Mount of Olives, has elevated the mountain northward and exposed layers of limestone and dolomite from the Cenomanian-Turanian Period in the western section of the mountain, the same section that faces the Judean anticline.

Now, how could Zechariah, in 520 BC, know that an earthquake fault line runs east to west under the Mount of Olives?

According to Grace thru faith and several other websites, in 1964, when King Hussein of Jordan had the Intercontinental Hotel built on top of the Mount of Olives, engineers discovered the fault line running through the original construction site, which was directly East of the Temple Mount. They relocated the site to the south, desecrating hundreds of Jewish graves in the process, and built the hotel there. Today it’s called the Seven Arches Hotel.

The discovery of the earthquake fault line under the Mount of Olives leads Callum Hoare to write in the UK Express, Feb 7, 2019:

A Biblical prophecy could be fulfilled after geologists discovered a sign along a famous mountain range described in the Bible as being integral to the story of Jesus Christ’s second coming.

  1. Excellent article. Somehow it never ceases to reassure me that Our Lord and Savior uses natural logical means to accomplish many of the happenings that he oversees.

  2. My understanding of the Our Lord’s Second Coming is that He will come, in Glory, and He will Judge the Living and the Dead—and that this will happen “in the twinkling of an eye.” In other words, it will be UNDENIABLE and UNAVOIDABLE. Every last living human being on the Earth shall know it, and it will, in all likelihood, inspire SHEER TERROR in the hearts of even the Just. He shall send (or be accompanied by) His Holy Angels, and they shall separate the saved from the damned, the “sheep” from the “goats.” Make No Mistake: It will be an absolute final and undeniable and unmitigable CATASTROPHE. Our Lord shall be seen from every point on Earth. In other words, in New York, He will be there. In London, He will be there. In Israel, He will be there. Look out your window, and He will be there. He will be omnipresent from any and every point on Earth.
And when Our Lord ascends, with the Just and His Angels and the Just, He Shall set the ENTIRE PLANET ON FIRE.

This is what I was taught, in Catholic school, by nuns, lay teachers and priests, from 1962 until the V-2 changes took hold (by about 1968). This was my father’s understanding. (And he grew up during the Depression).

This makes perfect sense to me. Yet others (many Protestants, I understand) believe differently. They believe that Our Lord will Come and He will establish His 1,000 year Rule. One outcome seems to contradict the other. I cannot read the mind of Christ on this matter, and Our Lord has told us, “No man shall know the day nor the hour,” and He also Said, “Not even the Son of Man knows [when this event will happen],” indicating, from a literal understanding, that “Only the Father Knows” the day, date and hour of this event.

But Zechariah says something very mysterious and revealing at the same time. “A unique day… with no distinction between day and night.” Will it be at the moment of dawn? Or, will it happen in twilight? How can there be a time of day “with no distinction between day and night?” I do not know.

But Zechariah tells us this much, that this Mount of Olives, in which Our Lord began His Passion, is the site of a geological fault line, and that “it will split in two” when Our Lord Comes back. This, I think, is the definitive event in that He will allow the earth itself to announce what History shall know as undeniable: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, Has Come to Judge the Living and the Dead. And, when this catastrophe (at least for the wicked) is over, HISTORY ITSELF SHALL BE OVER. This is what people in their natural state do not understand: 1) There WILL be an END to human history, 2) It SHALL be announced, and 3) Time itself will STOP. These things, I think, are the essentials in that they are 1) undeniable, 2) unmistakable and, 3) IRREVERSIBLE.

I would be very interested in hearing what others, even non-Christians, have to say about this event. Again, I admit that “no man knoweth the day nor the hour,” but I do believe it will happen in this Century, and I admit I could be wrong. (Either I am correct or I am incorrect; the choice is either/or, meaning I can imagine no other possible outcome in the matter).

  3. How could one not see the fulfillment of unimaginable Biblical prophecies of the distant past and the conditions of the present and not take the unimaginable prophecies for the future seriously?

  4. Wow! That is cool!

  5. Turn from your sins and live holy so you will be found blameless at His coming. No more compromise!

2 Peter 3:13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. 3:14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
