Free Morning-After Pills for Teenagers in NY Schools

New York City Public Schools Offering ‘Morning-After Pill’

CBS: The New York City Department of Education has begun offering the morning-after pill to students in a pilot program at 13 high schools across the city.

The school nurse offices have been stocked with Plan B emergency contraception and others like it in an effort to combat teen pregnancy, according to a statement from the Department of Education (DOE). The birth control will be available to students as young as 14 without parental notification, according to the DOE.

No conversation needed…

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said she thinks the pilot program will help fight against teen pregnancy. “High school students are very sexually active and getting pregnant so we don’t have that luxury to think that they are too young to be engaged in conversations about contraception and sexual education,” Quinn told WCBS 880.

Parents have the option to opt their children out of the program that provides the free emergency contraception. The DOE has sent notes to parents alerting them about the new program and information on how to opt out. Just 1-2% of parents have opted out of the program, the DOE said.

The pills have been made available under the new school program known as CATCH – Connecting Adolescents To Comprehensive Health – which is aimed at stemming teen pregnancy.

Some parents oppose the program, and said schools should not be offering emergency contraception to students. “I just don’t agree with the morning-after pill for a child who really isn’t aware of what they’re getting themselves into at this point,” one Upper West Side mother told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck.

“I’m going to go home and discuss this with my kids even though they’re grown. I have grandchildren and I’m definitely going to go home and discuss this matter with them as well,” the woman said.

Others question the lack of parental notification when the contraception is given. “Should the high school or the city pay for it? Are we responsible for that? I don’t think so, but to have a 14-year-old child in that dilemma, that’s not a good situation either,” one woman told Schuck. ”I would hope that a 14-year-old girl would have that kind of relationship at least with her mother.”

According to city figures, more than 7,000 New York City residents get pregnant by the time they are 17 years old. More than half of those pregnancies are aborted, the Department of Health said.

The city said the program to offer contraception without parental notification is in accordance with state law. “I think that it is correct to not have parental notification. Just as I do as it relates to no parental notification around abortions because the complexity of it, although reflexively that sounds right, it really will end up in reality rendering the resource useless for many of the girls who need it most,” Quinn told WCBS 880.

This is the first time the city’s public schools have dispensed hormonal birth control and Plan B and it may be a first nationwide, according to the New York Post. Schools already have free condoms available to students.

So Ms. Quinn first says children are not too young to be engaged in conversations about contraception and sexual education, then turns around and says parental notification of abortion is not necessary because of the “complexity” of it? Why no conversation about abortion?

New York – no Coca Cola over 16 ounces but free condoms and morning-after pills for your children!

  1. No smoking and no big-sized soft-drinks for New Yorkers, but schoolchildren can get prescription morning-after abortion pills without their parents’ knowledge. That tells you what the warped priorities are of Nanny-Nazi Bloomberg.

  2. Dispensing drugs without a license is a felony. Arrest the jerks.

  3. And of course there is no side effects mentioned…WOW! And you are suppose to take it ASAP. So if the teen has sex on Friday, it won’t do much good on Monday, but they will still get ALL those hormones added to their already raging hormones! So what’s next? They tell the kids to make sure they have sex Sunday-Thursday???

    • I agree with all the moral principles that giving these kids these pills are wrong, etc, but birth control if anything has the opposite effect you mentioned, it can take the edge off the sex drive, not increase it.

  4. The child takes a magic pill and doesn’t imagine she can still be pregnant. So 6 months later, she is now pregnant. I’d say the school is responsible for all pregnancy/medical bills. Why a school would want to take on this is beyond comprehension!!!!!! If I was a parent, its time to home school or private school and ALL costs! The public school system is no longer failing…BUT FAILED! They CANNOT be trusted with your child anymore!

  5. If I had kids that age today I would SO home-school them and never look back. I was watching an episode of that stupid show Wife Swap the other day and they had a family who home-schooled their 15 year old girl. She was a beautiful, polite, intelligent, well behaved person but the Hollywood producers chose to portray her as a misfit who didn’t fit in to society because she had never dated and “lacked social skills with the opposite sex”. Um, yeah, and she’s never been to the nurse’s office for a free condom or a morning after pill either.

  6. OMG! Why am I not surprised that you’re another pro-abortion death cultist. Like the commenter who calls himself “Arnold Friend”, the Devil, you’re just another devil-worshipping leftist, with the words “plan parent” (for the abortion clinic Planned Parenthood) and the number “666” in your email address. You’re sick.

Since your IP address, like Arnold Friend’s, is in New York city, you’re probably the same Arnold Friend, aka Morris Joplin.

Oh, here’s a reminder: “YOU LOSE!”

  7. Maybe children should never have sex until they mature enough for the responsibility.

Nah, that’s too much personal responsibility. Just let big government hand out abortion pills or push for a girl to suck an innocent baby from the womb.

    • It’s amazing that, adjusted for population, the birthrate for illegitimate babies has increased 13 fold since the 1940’s, in spite of the availability of birth control and abortion. Think maybe teaching responsibility to children has anything to do with that??

  8. Why not just just give them bullets for their guns?

    May as well.
