Facebook now offers 58 gender choices

LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) is so very passé.

The AP reports that on Feb. 14, 2014, social media giant Facebook added a customizable option with about 50 different terms people can use to identify their gender as well as three preferred pronoun choices: him, her or them.

Facebook said the changes initially cover the company’s 159 million monthly users in the U.S. and are aimed at giving people more choices in how they describe themselves, such as androgynous, bi-gender, intersex, gender fluid or transsexual.

“There’s going to be a lot of people for whom this is going to mean nothing, but for the few it does impact, it means the world,” said Facebook software engineer Brielle Harrison, who worked on the project and is herself undergoing gender transformation, from male to female. She said she was changing her Facebook identity from Female to TransWoman.

Facebook, which has 1.23 billion active monthly users around the world, also allows them to keep their gender identity private and will continue to do so. The company does not routinely publish data about users, and had no early figures about people changing their gender identity or leaving Facebook on Thursday.

The Williams Institute, a think tank based at the University of California, Los Angeles, estimates there are at least 700,000 individuals in the U.S. who identify as transgender, an umbrella term that includes people who live as a gender different from the one assigned to them at birth.

The move by Facebook represents a basic and yet significant form of recognition of the nation’s growing transgender rights movement, which has been spurred by veteran activists and young people who identify as transgender at younger ages. The Human Rights Campaign last year found that 10% of the 10,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual transgender youths it surveyed used “other” or wrote in their own gender terms.

Blogger and computer coder Meitar Moscovitz, in Santa Fe, N.M., points out Facebook has a commercial interest for expanding the standard male-female gender choices to a legion of 50 options: “This isn’t about Facebook being inclusive. It’s about Facebook making sure people remain ignorant of exactly that facet; that they are categorizing you anyway. The more information you give Facebook, the more money you’re worth to Facebook.”

Indeed, Facebook already targets advertising according to male or female genders. For those who change to something neutral, ads will be targeted based on the pronoun they select for themselves. But Facebook says that advertisers cannot target ads to those who declare themselves transgender or recently changed their gender because, unlike getting engaged or married, changing gender is not registered as a “life event” on the site and won’t post on timelines.

Facebook came up with its range of terms after consulting with leading gay and transgender activists, and the company plans to continue working with them. It plans to take the initiative global after working with activists abroad to come up with terms appropriate in other countries.

Actually, the AP report is wrong. Facebook offers not 50, but at least 58 gender options, according to ABC News:

There are some terms I’ve never seen before:

  • Cisgender: According to Queer Dictionary, a cisgender person is someone who identifies as they gender/sex they were assigned at birth. For example, your birth certificate says female, and you identify as a female woman.
  • Intersex: According to the Intersex Society of America, “intersex” is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male. For example, a person might be born appearing to be female on the outside, but having mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. Or a person may be born with genitals that seem to be in-between the usual male and female types—for example, a girl may be born with a noticeably large clitoris, or lacking a vaginal opening, or a boy may be born with a notably small penis, or with a scrotum that is divided so that it has formed more like labia. Or a person may be born with mosaic genetics, so that some of her cells have XX chromosomes and some of them have XY.
  • Neutrois: A non-binary gender identity that may refer to neutral-gender, null- (or no) gender, neither male nor female, genderless, and agender.

  1. These categories might have helped me identify some creatures I think were women when I was a kid in art college. They left out one useful category: WTF.

  2. Somedays Dr. You give me way more info than I really need. GAG Thanks

  3. I first heard the word “Cisgender” in that RamZPaul video I sent that you posted in Spring of 2012. I would love to put “Cisgender Female” to be funny, but then that would fall under the major category “other” and I don’t want to give credit there. I have also heard that Cisgender goes beyond just identifying as your biological gender, but that it means you are also straight, NOT gay or bisexual. It means you are normal in every sense!

  4. And here I thought I had it all figured out. Gender: male or female, sex: male and female. :~D

Again I say, “Even so, come quickly Lord Jesus.”

  5. Unfortunately, the world is devolving into a most confusing place! When I was young, I thought I had things all figured out–now so much information has been added that I feel as though I should go hide in my closet.

  6. Sadly the list is incomplete. I am sure that Putin would have included
faggot, queer, pervert, degenerate, queen, fairy…..and so would i.

  7. Dear Auntie L: Ditto. (Tho’ I don’t think I ever had everything figured out…) I feel like locking myself in the closet, too. (My other threat is….I’m going to run away to a simpler place—-a farm in KY…or the Valley of VA, or a cabin in Appalachia or back to the Indian Reservation in the Rockies…..some place where none of this really matters….it’d be just me & the vegetable gardens/milking goats and chickens..). The other thing I keep wondering is—–why do people THINK that I need this overload of information every day? Why MUST I understand what’s going on with their sexual organs or their sexual thoughts on a daily basis??? Why can’t they just serve me coffee at the cafe—if that’s their job—-and let their sexual organs out of it? GEEZ!

Once I eves-dropped on a pre-teen conversation among boys right before the first GW Bush election. I heard one little boy say to another, “My dad says he’s voting for Bush because he doesn’t want me to have to decide between marrying a boy and marrying a girl.” At the time….I thought the conversation was a little shocking for this young age group—-I mean….it wasn’t about baseball, boyscout camp, math homework, some sports star or a big game coming up, or an upcoming school vacation…..Egads…it was about the eventuality that this little kid might marry a girl OR a boy. There went childhood —alll blown out the window that day……and now….I see that I was very foolish to NOT “see” what that parent saw and worried about way-back-when. I was concerned then—and intrigued…but NEVER thought it would become a part of daily conversatioin for even 11-year-olds. HOW WRONG I WAS!

    • Appalachia? Gender certainly doesn’t matter there. Hear the banjos?

      • Dearest One, Perry…this is an “aside” to this original topic…, but I need to reply to your post: I know you allude to a Hollywood sterotype from “Deliverance” w/your quip. Please don’t apply it wholesale to the hard-working people of Appalachian Valleys/Ridges who are right this moment being stripped of their (bare) livelihoods by Obama w/his coal & other BOGUS energy policies (Oh yes….and of one of the states that did not vote for him in the first primary, but went to Hilary….after which Obama opined, “West Virginia is closer to Arkansas…that’s why. So…our geographically-challenged NOW president didin’t even KNOW where West Virginia WAS…..practically on the doorstep of his own state of Illinois, NOT Arkansas.) Additioinally….don’t speak/disparage of people you might not know.

I was born on an Appalachian Valley dairy farm in PA, went to college & married in a rural Appalachian Valley in VA, where old order Amish/ Mennonites(many from my own ancestral line/surname) still farmed w/draft horses….as young maririeds, we both pursued higher degrees & lived economically in a TRAVEL trailer in the boon-docks where the other trailer-ites worked for a few bucks an hour in an egg candling concern (turkey capital of the world). When we came home at night, we’d find eggs, frozen dinners, other food, anonymously piled on our little trailer step—this from people who hardly had enough for themselves! On the day my husband & I married in this little burg…he (who’d tutored kids “in his spare time,” & proudly talked about his upcoming wedding to all the little “holler kids” ) drove around & rounded them all up to ride w/him to the church. They came to our wedding in their best “bib & tucker”….much of it mis-fit from older siblings, Dad’s old tie all bunched up & too big, but hair carefully combed , teeth brushed, & altogether beautiful to our eyes. We will never forget how they honored us by being there for us, treating it as the most special day in THEIR lives…not just ours. Later, expecting our first child, & finding that I had Rh Factor at a time when breaking science was just then understanding how to handle it (but NOT my rural hostpital OR my OB-GYN) one of my Appilachian neighbors lost her baby to the SAME thing in my SAME Dr. office. I hardly knew her—but she knew me & the FIRST PLACE SHE CAME to from that office/experience was to my home to tell me to get out…to go somewhere else…to find a way to save my baby…she had read about a way that was possible….& told me about a new shot…but I had to get to a large teaching hospital at the time….I DID THAT BECAUSE OF THIS POOR APPALACIAN EGG-CANDLER RURAL WOMAN……NOT b/c of my doctor or any of the freakin’ egghead academics that I saw day in and day out….& I have two healthy kids because of her warnings……My husband & I both have had very advanced degrees for a long time now….& I’d go back to Appalachia in a heart beat to live with these people. Please feel free to reply and tell me how your neighbors might treat YOU these days……I’m betting they don’t pile food on your doorstep and watch out for your health and babies “just because” they are nice people….??????? And, so on……..There are still some places in our great country where people are still unaffected by Hollywood, still think a “tweet” comes from a bird, and a “facebook” means you went to the library today….and that a neighbor is a friend who moved next-door…..

  8. Who’s going to be first to put out a Dictionary of these terms explaining all the meanings and parameters used to decide what’s what? I intend to keep it simple-Male,Female,Homosexual,Heterosexual,Other.

  9. Just wait until each one of these genders demands its own Olympic venue. Intersex Biathlon, Transsexual Tonsil Hockey, Loco Luge, Barbie Sledding .. and suppose you got ALL the body parts? You could compete as either or both in all venues!

  10. When I saw “Gender Fluid” my stomach became queezy. I’m not sure if I really want to look it up to see what it means.

  11. Thank you Dr. Eowyn for this fascinating post! It appears that the subject of gender is so important to these people (even though it really is extremely simple), that they really need TO GET A LIFE! Apparently, this is all they have to their identity. . . Dear God is right! I learned some new terms today as well. Frankly, there is nothing interesting or appealing about any of the terms.

  12. Which category does barry fall under ?. Or Moochie for that fact ?

  13. ..I feel like being a taco today!

  14. You’ll notice plain ol’ GIRL & BOY are missing from the list. The younger crowd who use FB & are still at the “GIRL” & “BOY” age, will be left out, which will force them to “find themselves” in that mass-of-confusion list.

They should have a NOYB (None of Your Business) option.

I’m glad I don’t do Facebook, but all the other big internet sites will probably follow suit soon enough.

Oh, & thanks for the definitions! I never heard of some of those either.

  15. I’ve come to the conclusion that Facebook is in reality an insane asylum and it’s being run by the inmates

  16. Gays and transgenders insist on being accepted in society as equals with equal rights and that’s fine…Therefore, all the categories should go on job applications. After all, the service was forced to abandon their stance and accept gays openly. If they really want to be open, I think their hand should be forced now. They want open acceptance and equality, then they should have to put it in writing on everything and stop all this harassment of everyone else. They need to put it in writing and be as proud of it as they say they are. Surely, they’re not afraid to be open and truthful on their job applications. I’m more than willing to put my gender and orientation down in writing just so they can’t say they’re being discriminated against.

  17. Remember that post I made awhile back about the majority furry fandom having some things in it that the mainstream public hasn’t heard of yet? It seems like failbook has worked with the gender-spectrum demoniacs (who are sorely in need of Christ and help, and likely exorcism) to compile a partial listing of some of them. Of course it goes without saying that there aren’t 58 or more genders for mankind, there are only two, and there will only ever be two, male and female, anything else is mental and/or spiritual illness. Basically what you’re seeing with this, is a direct and satanicly-inspired attack on anyone that is suggestible that uses facebook, it will especially mess up the plethora of kids/children that use it… IE “but dad there has to be because facebook says so.” Not to mention the many parents who won’t have an explanation for their kids if the questions are asked about these non-existant “genders”. I should put emphasis on the kids part because, like it or not, those kids who are allowed unfettered access to a computer and go to public school, will find a way to make a facebook profile, even if they are under 13 years of age.

I would strongly encourage all who read this to discourage friends, and their friends children, from having facebook at all, ever (or anything like it), the risk it poses to the youth, and those susceptible to propaganda, far outweighs alleged benefits of convenience and “staying in touch” (that is what E-mail is for). Remember the way this works is that it relies on peer-to-peer networking to spread the words, and generates attention for them, as well as doing damage to the people who get suckered into thinking they identify most with one of those bogus terms… and if the youth become indoctrinated with these words by proxy, then it helps cement them in the public mind at a later date, which can then be used to “justify” them, when a question of legal recognition comes up… etc.

I wonder how long until failbook adds a “hebephile” and “ephebophile” or “hebesexual” and “ephebosexual” “genders” to the list? (they already enable predators through lax security, and reporting.)

    • This is the post on “furries” — people dressing themselves up as animals — to which Seumas is referring. Scroll down for his comment:

Thank you, Seumas, for sounding the warning to parents not to let their kids go on Facebook.

      • Happy to help Dr. Eowyn, also I’m sure you and readers already know that back in february of 2013 I believe it was, the motion to add “hebephilia” in the D.S.M. 5 was defeated, and you and everyone else should know what that means. (Back in ’72 code 302.1 was removed from the D.S.M. of that time, we now know 302.1 as “homosexuality”.) If that is any indication of what the future holds… well you get the idea. Also as an aside, do facebook’s execs, deciding on this content, even understand what a “gender” is? Given what is included on the list, apparently they do not.

As a side note about the occult’s favorite deity (as seen in baphomet, etc.), in every case I’ve heard of, there has never been a “perfect hermaphrodite”/intersexed person, that is, one possessing full and functioning bits of both genders, one side is always dominant, and that dominant side, I would say, is the one the person is supposed to be. All this is much to the chagrin of the followers of evil, as it continues to point decidedly at the fact there are only two. (And thank God/Christ that there are only two, think of how much more of a mess the world would be with more than that.)
