Debbie Wasserman Schultz: Sequester nearly starving staffers

By Cheryl K. Chumley – The Washington Times
Automatic federal cuts are bringing staffers to the brink of starvation, suggested Debbie Wasserman Schultz, at a recent House Legislative Branch Appropriations Subcommittee hearing.
Restaurants on the House side of Congress are increasing in cost so much that aides are being “priced out” of a good meal, she said, as Fox News reported. The comments came by way of a discussion about the impacts of the sequester on lawmakers’ office budgets. Rep. Jim Moran said he may be forced to lay off a staffer — and then Ms. Wasserman Schultz weighed in with her tale of hard times.
Just to clarify: An 8-ounce bowl of Ham and Bean soup at the Cannon Office Building’s carry-out café costs $2. A gourmet wrap or sliced bread sandwich sells for about $5. And in the Longworth Building’s sit-down cafeteria, a serving of stuffed chicken, asparagus and mashed potatoes sells for about $7, Fox News finds.
Meanwhile, Ms. Wasserman Schultz’s staffers earn between $60,000 and $160,000 per year, Fox News reports.

  1. Sounds like they are floating pretty good with all that income, and their food prices are lower than we pay. I want to be a staffer in Washington.

  2. The impoverished staffers should take heart – Biden has been roughing it by staying in a five star hotel in Paris and racked up a whopping $585,000.50 bill for ONE night. We should be grateful to him for showing us what austerity really means and how to get by.

  3. At least they aren’t eating MREs while fighting in the sandbox. They get no sympathy from me.

  4. They eat better than i do, but so do welfare folks…Beans and weenies for me and my family,AGAIN…

    • I’m standing right here beside you Greg! Add to that mac-n-cheese, and fish sticks ‘n tater tots. Gawd I hate ’em all! LOL!
They had me in the hospital overnight (last night) for a possible heart attack, I’m borderline diabetic and I’m about to have 2 docs climbing all OVER my hind end “eat right!” “eat right!” “eat right!” Yeah, w/ WHAT, doc??? My good looks and my husband’s stellar reputation?? Really? Y’all gonna find a way to make it work when food is last on the “gotta do” list? Uh huh… Docs make to much money…so far…to know what it’s like to make decisions between a roof over our head, electric, meds-out-the-ears, or food? (My son pays my cable, God bless his heart! So we can have something to do, being home 24/7 and all.) Trust and Obey, is all we can do. Oh SO many ppl on Lowell’s FB page prayed for me and “liked” what he wrote, it really touched my heart! 🙂

      • Dear Christine,
So sorry you had a medical crisis. Thankfully, since you’re posting here, you didn’t have a heart attack?
        Prayers coming your way….

  5. This woman has the face of the north end of a south-bound horse.

  6. Poor, poor staffers. Who picks that kind of job, anyways?

  7. I’m waiting for the Sally Struthers ad: “For only $2 a day, you can sponsor one of Debbie Wasserman Schulz’ staffers… “

  8. HOGwash! (Forgive me, Lord!)

  9. That’s exactly the kind of “out of touch” crap we continue to get from some of our politicians. Wasserman Schultz has already been called out on other really “stupid” statements she has made in the past. She’s obviously doesn’t mind wasting legislative time. Throw her out with the rest of the trash!!
