DHS adds high-powered battle rifles to its arsenal

On May 7, 2012, I did a post on a rumor that the Obama administration is preparing for civil war.
Interviewed on a radio program, a private investigator claims that his contact in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) told him that the Obama administration expects and is preparing for civil war in America.
If true, maybe now we know why:

Now comes news that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is adding high-powered battle rifles to its arsenal. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for each Colt LE901 rifle is more than $2,000.

Kurl Nimmo reports for Infowars.com, July 13, 2012, that on July 5, DHS announced on the FedBizOpps.gov website that it plans to buy thirty-six Colt LE901 rifle systems. The latest DHS purchase follows a solicitation issued on July 13 for the purchase of .223 Caliber Remington Enhanced Performance Ammunition in excess of $500,000. The Colt assault weapons are designed to accept the .223 ammunition.
The 901 is much more than your typical assault rifle,” notes the Prepper Podcast Radio Network website. The weapon will allow “the DHS/FEMA foot soldier to go from an assault rifle to picking off ‘terrorists’ at a distance by only changing the upper receiver.”
This how Outdoor Life describes the Colt LE901 rifle:
“Colt Defense LLC offers the LE901-16S, a modular, multi-caliber rifle, built with both the modern hunter and the tactical professional in mind.  It’s modular, in that the rifle can be easily changed from a .308 Winchester (7.62×51 NATO) to a .223 Remington (5.56×45 NATO) by switching out the upper assemblies and buffer systems … In the classic .308 Winchester, the LE901-16S is a great choice for the big-game hunter.  Change over to the .223 upper assembly and you have a fine caliber for mid-sized game and varmints, as well as the top choice for a law enforcement officer’s tactical rifle … It weighs 9.4 pounds and measures 37.5 inches with the stock extended. It has an effective range of 700 meters in .308. Exceptional accuracy comes by way of the free floated, 16-inch, chrome-lined barrel and one-piece monolithic upper receiver … All operating controls on the LE901-16S are ambidextrous, including the magazine release, bolt catch and fire control selector … Currently offered in black, though other finishes are planned for later this year.

 MSRP: $2,129
In June, FedBizOpps.gov listed a “Personal Defense Weapons Solicitation” issued by DHS calling for 5.56x45mm NATO select-fire firearms “suitable for personal defense.” The due date for the solicitation is mid-October of 2012.
The American Dream blog had this comment about DHS’s purchase of ammunition: “I could understand if the U.S. military was ordering ammunition in this quantity. When you fight wars you can go through ammunition very rapidly. But the Department of Homeland Security is only supposed to be shooting at people very rarely.”
Also in April, Paul Joseph Watson reported on the DHS purchasing bullet resistant guard booths. “The purpose behind the bullet proof booths is unknown, but the DHS has publicly announced that it plans to increase the number of unannounced checkpoints manned by TSA VIPR teams and other federal agents beyond the 9300 that were set up last year alone,” Watson wrote at the time.
Kurt Nimmo concludes with this unsettling observation:
“It looks like DHS and the feds are gearing up for something big. A growing chorus of urgent voices are warning that the economy will finally implode this year and the result will be social chaos.”

Wow! An whole thirty-six rifles to war against the armed populace of the United States! If true, that’s going to be a short fight. Thirty-six rifles?!? I suspect that one could find several dozens of similar although semi-auto-only privately-owned rifles just among the citizens of my southern Missouri home town of 12,000 souls. On a more reasonable level, doesn’t the DHS also have jurisdiction over the Border Patrol and ICE? Isn’t it true that there is effectively a shooting war going on now on our border with Mexico with smugglers (both of humans and of drugs) on the one side… Read more »

The 36 are obviously for test evaluation. If the rifles live up their hype (and damn they look sweet on the videos), there will be bigger orders to come.
Taken purely by itself, the purchase of these guns is no big deal. The 901 seems to be an ideal field weapon for a small mobile team like Border Patrols. If we start hearing about this gun becoming a replacement for several existing, but older systems, then I won’t be so concerned. But it needs to be a more transparent process, just to avoid worrying folks.

I thought the new Obama issued SOP for Border Patrol
was to run and hide…I wish they could be equipped and allowed
to do their mission but better two rifles than two receivers/barrels.
…and don’t forget that half-crazy doesn’t mean half-right 🙂

Thank you Dr. Eowyn for this sobering post. I am worried about what the timing is telling us, specifically with regard to the upcoming election.

Honestly, from the news I have been seeing and what Oboner has been personally doing, especially with his “By all means neccessary” document,it sounds like we won’t make it to the election as he has it in mind to stage some sort of “event” at the right time to lock us down and suspend the conny and election.

Hmmm…36 rifles? No big deal I guess. But on top of everything else they are accumulating, makes me wonder what they are planning for.

in my humble opinion in the event of civil war people will fight cops and troops( no matter from what country), then you have drug gangs, gangs, nutbars, criminals, psychos armed with god knows what, drug money can buy a lot of firepower. i dont think it will be safe for anyone, given the fact that people do not care for their fellow man or woman, while i believe that a war is coming i pray all the time for this not to happen, if it does who ever wins will only have a total destroyed country

Left/libtards don’t care if the country is destroyed as long as they win and have power… even if it’s only over a pile of debris, other people are just expendable toward that end for them.

The more I think about this, the more it seems likely that those rifles are for test and evaluation purposes. I just can’t imagine any government agency the size of DHS buying only thirty-six rifles. It’s a new design that I could see proving useful with regard to commonality of parts between close range 5.56mm and longer range 7.62mm rifles if it proves sufficiently reliable. But it is a new concept. That being so, I strongly suspect that this purchase is for testing and evaluation purposes only.
