What happened to #BelieveSurvivors?

From Fox News: Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing Wednesday on new gun control legislation Democrats plan to push on the American people. The top Republican on the committee, Doug Collins, R-Ga., asked committee Democrats if I could testify about this legislation in an appropriate setting to offer another perspective as both a survivor of a shooting attack and strong supporter of our Second Amendment rights. But the Democrats said no. While liberals may try to silence conservative voices, I will not be silenced. The American people deserve to hear all perspectives. Here is the testimony I planned to give:

Statement for the Record

Republican Whip Steve Scalise, House Committee on the Judiciary
February 6, 2019

My name is Steve Scalise. I am the Congressman for Louisiana’s 1st District. I am the Republican Whip. I am also a target of gun violence.

Many of you may be familiar with the events of June 14, 2017. Around 7:00 AM, at the last morning practice before the annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity, an Illinois man named James Hodgkinson opened fire on myself and a group of Republican legislators and volunteers on an Alexandria, Va. baseball field.

Fortunately, as a member of House leadership, I was accompanied by my Capitol Police security detail who were able to return fire and engage the shooter until additional law enforcement officers arrived and ultimately took down the shooter. I was shot and nearly fatally wounded, and both of my detail agents were shot as well. I am alive today thanks to the bravery of U.S. Capitol Police and the Alexandria Police, heroes like Congressman Brad Wenstrup and the first responders who rushed to the scene, the incredible medical team at Washington MedStar Hospital Center, and most importantly the grace of God.

I applaud the intentions behind this hearing and believe we are all pursuing the same goal of reducing gun violence. As someone who experienced gun violence, I do not want anyone else to go through that trauma. However, it is also important to me that we be honest with ourselves and the American people about what will — or won’t — actually prevent these tragedies. The shooter who targeted me that morning was armed with an SKS rifle and a 9mm Smith & Wesson handgun, both of which were purchased in compliance with Illinois gun laws.

The new gun control restrictions currently being considered by the Democratic majority in H.R. 8 would not have prevented my shooting.

In fact, these new gun control measures being proposed in H.R. 8 would not have prevented any number of recent mass violence events. Several perpetrators of recent multi-victim shootings also purchased their guns legally. In some instances, the background check system failed, and lack of intervention from law enforcement failed to intercept potential threats.

I want to stress that the man who shot me was issued a permit to purchase firearms by the state of Illinois, and had acquired them legally. At Virginia Tech, Charleston, and Sutherland Springs failures in the background check system allowed individuals to illegally obtain the firearms they used to commit their crimes. The alleged loopholes that H.R. 8 claims to fix would not have prevented these tragedies either.

Instead, whether intentionally or not, the gun control proposals in H.R. 8 could turn law abiding citizens into criminals while also failing to achieve the stated purpose of reducing gun violence.

A recent study by the Violence Prevention Research Program at UC Davis and Johns Hopkins University into California’s effort to implement “comprehensive background checks” found that, “The simultaneous implementation of [the Comprehensive Background Check policy] and [prohibitions on firearm purchase and possession for persons convicted within the past 10 years of certain violent crimes classified as misdemeanors] was not associated with a net change in the firearm homicide rate over the ensuing 10 years in California.” Even though California implemented more stringent background checks, this study shows that these measures did not reduce gun violence.

In fact, most criminals obtain firearms through unlawful means — whether through theft, straw purchases, or lying on the required paperwork. A DOJ study of federal inmates found that only seven percent who possessed a firearm while committing the crime they were serving time for purchased it legally from a firearms dealer under their own name. Based on similar gun control measures in states like California, H.R. 8 would not deter a criminal from engaging in criminal activity, and it won’t decrease gun crime. Instead, it only succeeds in limiting the ways that law-abiding citizens could exercise their Second Amendment rights.

Every single month in America, law-abiding citizens with concealed carry permits defend themselves and others against criminals who have guns. For example, on January 8th, a man approached a 25-year-old woman in Chicago, displayed a weapon, and attempted to rob her at a bus stop. The woman had a concealed carry permit. She drew her own weapon and fired a shot, killing the armed robber. The owner of a nearby pharmacy said such violence happens “all over” Chicago. However, in this case, the intended victim was able to defend herself with her own gun.

On January 2nd, a Good Samaritan in California with a concealed carry permit used his firearm to stop an attempted stabbing of a security guard and held the perpetrator until law enforcement could arrive at the scene.
On January 17th, a man at an IHOP in Alabama opened fire on employees, killing one before another employee pulled his handgun and killed the shooter in self-defense.

On January 29th, an armed robber held up a Family Dollar Store in Georgia. A customer was able to use a personal firearm to shoot and kill the robber before the criminal could hurt any of the many employees or customers in the store.

These are just some examples from the last month alone. There are hundreds of stories like these every single year from law-abiding Americans all over the country.

I am alive due to the effective and immediate response of my Capitol Police detail, and the Alexandria Police Department. Most victims of gun violence do not have law enforcement already on the scene to respond to a violent gunman. Instead of making it harder for citizens to defend themselves until law enforcement arrives, Congress should consider legislation like H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, a bill that would help law-abiding citizens have the same tools to defend themselves as a criminal has of trying to inflict harm, regardless of where they travel.

I firmly believe we must never forget, nor minimize, the importance of the Second Amendment to our Constitution.
H.R. 8, as well as other new gun control legislation currently being considered by the House Democrat majority do not accomplish the goal of reducing gun violence.

  1. Thank you, DCG, for posting Congressman Scalise’s censored-by-Democrats statement.

Imagine what the Demonrats will do to us if/when they get total power.

    • “Imagine what the Demonrats will do to us if/when they get total power.”

Sadly it is in the back of my mind much of the time these days as their behavior becomes more viscous and unhinged. If there are not bloodbaths there will be some creative way ( ending the constitution ) of finding an excuse to imprison people. The persecution has already begun if you let if be known you support Trump as your story on the man who owns a restaurant and is refusing to serve Trumpers demonstrates. Or just look at the poor kid who had the Indian beating the drum in his face. Fortunately he is now suing 50 people who libeled him as sometimes the courts are still fair.
I watched a documentary on Francisco Franco last night just to see how they were going to present the dictator. Franco was a beast of course, but since this was PBS the leftists were portrayed as heroic or the good guys. No mention of the Jewish communist agitators who started they whole socialist movement there by the Jewish lesbian historian who provided “authority” on the subject. Stalin’s support of the leftist government was mentioned as a matter of fact like if was a good thing without any peep of the bloodbaths he instigated far surpassing deaths by Franco. But then again, what would we expect from PBS?

      • I know exactly what you mean. As they say “history is written by the victors”. If people can simply forget for a moment that all things are NOT political and that there is more than “left vs right”, they might come to grow disgusted with all the manipulation.

Personally, few things in life annoy me more than attempts to manipulate me. I’m severely methane intolerant.

        • Yes the manipulation is everywhere and it annoys me to no end too – in fact I resent the hell out of it. I don’t watch any kind of ” dramas” in movies, or TV at all because they are not only full of propaganda/ political manipulation, they are full of pure emotional manipulation. Who wants to be made to cry, have false exhilaration, or get stressed over suspense? Not me.

        • Lophatt . . . Bravo! Very well said. I find that I suffer from the same malady — it really burns my cookies when people deliberately try to manipulate, or push their agenda onto me.

      • Lana, there’s no way socialism will take hold here, we don’t have it in our blood to be submissive, we have been free, the black Africans were slaves but they were not submissive to the white men, the black women had the white men’s children, the black Americans! It was just that they didn’t have the means to fight until Abe Lincoln made them free, and FREE they have been, all of US, white, blacks, from every continent we have known freedom and we won’t be enslaved by a doctrine foreign to US.

        • Gosh Alma I wish I could agree with you. You are correct in the main of course- Americans don’t like socialism, but you have left a couple things out of the equation: all the foreigners from third world countries that they are importing WILL vote for it because they want the handouts, and the Muslims in particular do not want to assimilate, but advance Islam. Some 65 plus percent of immigrants are on some form of welfare, and stas have shown they overwhelmingly vote Dem ( commie) . No one is stopping the tide of third world refuse from entering this country. In fact they are supporting it. Even Trump in his STOTU even said he wants MORE immigration as long as it is legal. REALLY? Sorry, but legal immigration is destroying this country as much as the illegal immigration because the 1965 immigration act emphasized bringing non Europeans in in mass numbers. Add to this, the mass brainwashing of the youth in the schools and you almost have it made when the boomers start dying off in droves. Some 40 percent of kids under 30 believe socialism is better. The overwhelming majority of Blacks vote democrat. Conservative Christian Blacks are few and far between. It’s all about demographics. The demographics are changing rapidly, and once that has changed there will be no going back. I don’t like being pessimistic, but I have to call it how I see it. We could easily turn it around, but we won’t because they powers that be don’t want it turned around, and there are too many ignorant useful idiots out there who buy into the lies.

          • All good points. We tend to look at these things from our own generational perspectives. They haven’t taught real “civics” in schools for a long time and most kids don’t even learn cursive anymore.

They come out of these institutions fully broke for a life of serfdom and uselessness. They are not people of hope, they are people of lazy indulgence. Lack of hope breeds these attitudes. That’s why it is easy to identify communist countries by the crappy workmanship and ugliness.

            • Ha, LO….from the front lines of education, I want to interject a comment to your reply above……NO CIVICS are taught in my district at any level. US History is taught only in 4th, 8th, and 11th grades. ONLY ONE geography class (which, remember, teaches not only an understanding of where things are in the world…but also cultural geography—like concentrations of muslims, buddhists/ Christians, religions in general, certain tribes or genetic concentrations …economics, migrations/governments/crops/trade items/skills …..etc… is taught in ONE of our 3 HSs, only ONE teacher, ONE course, for ONE year. In my middle school, the “academy kids” (the kids failing math and English), get double blocks of math and English in their day, so they can fail them TWICE…..which they 99% of the time, do…and to make room for this, they skip 2 years —7th/8th grades—of social studies/history, one of which is that 8th grade US History: NO social science/ history, and NO science classes to make room for these double blocks of math and English. LIKE—are they EVER EVER going to use algebra? The algebra that they fail TWICE? Are they ever going to college with their grades and continued failures? NO! BUT I”D Darned sure like to see them ONE DAY know how to COOK, SHOP, BUDGET, BALANCE a check book….add, subtract, understand BUSINESS MATH, which they are NEVER TAUGHT before they are dragged into algebra for two hours per day just to show that our school system is on the books, “remediating” or giving them “interventions.” . And, as an aside….for years and years, if I have to send a kid to another teacher or to the office with a note/question, I don’t even BOTHER to staple the message shut anymore. I just write it in cursive. In many, many years, I’ve never had a kid able to read it. In today’s age, cursive is a secret code….which means that, these kids will NEVER EVER EVER be able to read their primary founding documents…like the Declaration, or the Constitution as primary sources. They will ALWAYS have to depend upon someone else reading it/transferring it into NON-CURSIVE print for them, and so then, a secondary source. IF someone interjects that the moon is made of green cheese, or that the 2nd ammendment was suspended in the year 2015, they have no recourse but to believe it unless and until they become “fluent” in reading cursive themselves one day and can read and understand the primary source. Geez…maybe that’s why these latest generations believe in Ocassio Cortez and the Big Bern…..they can’t READ anything the original socialists ever wrote and have to depend upon solely O-C and the Big Bern from their in-print tweets and writings/interpretations of socialism……

              • That’s a very good point. I was shocked the other day at Mass when a sister gave a presentation for her school. She stated that they taught cursive and I thought that was a weird thing to say so I looked into it. I didn’t know that they had stopped teaching it.

I started thinking about “why” they would do that and it hit me, just what you just said. They have no way to verify ANYTHING from the source documents. They may as well read Swahili.

You are absolutely correct about math skills too. How much Trig does it take to hold up a liquor store? They can’t make change, screw in a light bulb or read an analog clock.

Before I retired from federal service one of my jobs was to certify Naval Officers to receive federal warrants for obligating the Government in federal contracts. They all had post-graduate degrees, usually in engineering.

I would sign all of their correspondence until I was satisfied that they would not embarrass the Government in their letters. Sometimes it took a year or more to get them to a level where an English speaker could understand them.

I can only recall one that I immediately allowed to sign her own correspondence. That was because she had been an English major at some point and could read and write at a high school level.

                • OK….reviewed this with my husband and we had our BIG, HUGE Friday evening let-down LAUGH over this. Thank you so much LO….and everyone else who needs a comedic moment away from our every-day reality….MUST read this link provided by Lophatt. I, for sure, am going to pass it on to my science teachers and beyond…….. 🙂 I am smiling……..

          • I agree with You, Lana, I had a taste of communism so I am hopeful the inexperience millennials realize what they have been taught is just a mirage.

      • The ‘communist’ butchery inflicted on tens of millions of Russian Christians was sold as a “Workers’ Paradise.” The Orwellian occupation gov in DC incinerates tens of thousands from the sky to “bring freedom and democracy” to the dispossessed, mutilated, and dead. The scripted public psychodrama of their wholly owned msm and Congress changes to suit the American audience, now promising that disarming the citizenry will magically eliminate violent crime. Obviously (by their record) they’re motivated by no concern for life but by a maniacally atavistic hatred of white Euro-Americans that probably exceeds the hatred of Christian Russian Slavs. The drums of war are already beating louder in the msm and Congress with red flags flying everywhere as CNN and Fox join hands, so I’ve read, using jingoistic flag-waving and cooked intel to ignite a exterminationist blowout between a still-Christian America and Christian Russia, possibly starting with a partial incineration of Iran. If anything, worse is on the horizon. Btw, did you know that while CNN’s openly anti-Christian agenda gave at least 10-to-1 favorable coverage of “gay marriage,” on “family values” Fox it was still 3-to-1 favorable? Fox entertainment, moreover, has more sexually depraved filth in its children’s programming than even ABC. As Michael Hoffman points out, getting people to accept such contradictions is a mind-control prerequisite for having mass murder committed in their name and calling it good, as the CUFI’s already do.

        • Excellent comment Dan.

          As far as your point:
“Obviously (by their record) they’re motivated by no concern for life but by a maniacally atavistic hatred of white Euro-Americans that probably exceeds the hatred of Christian Russian Slavs.”

I don’t know about exceed, but it is certainly equal. The atavistic hatred in these (((people))) is truly something frightening to behold when they speak of Russia. And of course you are correct, their big war will finally get rid of the two largest remaining European powers and their peoples paving the way for Israhell to step into the void with the antichrist probably sitting somewhere in the neighborhood of the Israeli “hall of justice”, or on the New Temple mount they are planning on building.

    • I DO imagine it and it worries me. This is definitely getting serious. Every day that passes is more repressive than the last. This total control of media must end as well. They will use it to stupefy and whip their flying monkeys into a frenzy.

Why even those who claim to be on the “left” can’t see how totalitarian it’s become. No one in their right minds could support that. Of course that’s the answer, isn’t it?

      • Yes, it boggles the mind how many AREN’T in their right minds. I actually have a friend who is totally stuck in the past image of the 1060’s blue collar version of the Dems and cannot, or will not see what is before her. We don’t talk much these days
I imagine it too which I try not to indulge, but it is somewhat like not trying to see a freight train headed towards you while you are standing on the tracks. This is why lately I have had to take a break from it all – even here on the FOTM because I already have too much stress from my health issues, and there is not a damn thing I can do personally to change anything. I lost my cat about 3 weeks ago and the grief from that alone was enough to jack my nervous/ immune system up. I find I just have to turn it all off most of the time anymore, and try to enjoy the peace I do have which consists of watching my chickens graze in my backyard and doing spiritual reading!

        • Sorry to hear about your troubles. I understand that completely. I know people like you mention. THAT is the issue with them. They are locked into a world of promises that doesn’t exist anymore. The truth is, they were lies back then. Of course the “principles” behind some of them were admirable. Not anymore.

It is good to hear what others say. I try not to be “political” because it doesn’t mean anything. It’s like going to a rigged game and rooting for one of the teams. Some enjoy doing that. I don’t.

The facts are the facts no matter what name you associate with them. It is all distilled into a dialectic to make it easier for them to manipulate us. Those of us who find manipulation repulsive refuse to play.

No true change is going to happen by going to those responsible for solutions. We each have to stand alone with our principles in tact. Nobody is going to “fix this”. This is just the modern version of good vs evil.

For a Christian he knows that he’s already won. The goal now is to try to save as many as possible and help them to that realization.

          • “For a Christian he knows that he’s already won. The goal now is to try to save as many as possible and help them to that realization.”

I love that, and agree with all my heart.

I wish I could help others too, but here in Californicate no one wants to listen, and I don’t have the energy anymore anyway. All I can hope for is that my life as I conduct myself is a worthy witness to those I love and those I come into contact with no matter how briefly.

        • Oh, Lana. I’m so sorry for your loss…. 🙁

          • Thank you so much Dr. E. I know you know how hard this is as many others here who have lost their beloved pets. Though I am not new to losing a pet this one has hit me harder for many reasons. It has been a really sad time.
They thought he had asthma, but all the meds- even the kitty inhaler did nothing. Finally at the emergency they found out that there was a growth squeezing his trachea- literally cutting his airflow to almost nothing, and his lungs had become over inflated. There was no choice at that point. It was so sudden and too soon. Neither he or we were ready for this. It was really a shock, and we felt like he was really ripped away from us. He was a relatively young cat at only 11 or 12. About a week after we had him put to sleep my daughter called to tell me she had had a dream where he was not wanting to leave us, and was in confusion hanging around our house, but not understanding the change. That distressed me too and all I could do was ask Jesus that if there are kitty angels, for him to send them to my sweet Vlad to guide him home if that is what is best for him.

        • So sorry about losing your kitty. Hard to go through that, so sad.

          • Thank you DCG.

            • Might I suggest reading the “Philokalia” if you haven’t already? I have a copy in two volumes that I read all the time. It’s a wonderful collection from the “Niptic Fathers” and reminds us that we’re all sojourners here.

              • Well thank you very much for the recommendation Lophatt. I will take this as a sign to do just that since I had thought of buying a copy a few months ago, but had put it into abeyance since I still had other spiritual books that I had purchased, but that are waiting to be read. I usually have three books going at once anyway, so why not one more?

        • Sorry to hear about your cat Lana…my parents sound like your friend regarding Democrats. They didn’t like Trump because in the case of my dad, it was kinda “personal” – he’s a retired ironworker, and while he didn’t work on Trump Tower Chicago, he knows many who did, and his issues with Trump are union-related; and mom thinks Trump’s an asshole, to which I replied, “Yeah, but he’s MY KIND OF asshole!” They’re so close-minded on him, that I haven’t been yet able to say that if JFK were alive today, he’d probably be Republican.

          • Thanks so much Jackie.
Wow yes, I can see the same mind at work in your parents. And funny, I told my friend that too- the present day Dems make Kennedy look like a Republican! He would have rejected 98 percent of what they do. I hear crickets after I mention that. These people have minds like an umbrella…unless you don’t open it, it doesn’t work. Their minds are not working, they are dormant if not missing.

            • JFK was no Communist, that’s for sure. He pushed “self-help”. He pushed hope. That era was more “I’ll teach you how if you’ll do the heavy lifting”. Once you learn how you can help yourself.

    • Dr. Eowyn excuse me for being off topic-Greg Burton just posted a story from you re: a Russian revealing Obama being groomed for President, foreign born, etc. absolutely riveting story-can you give the url please? People ought to be shouting re: this story!

  2. The congressman makes a salient and cogent discourse on the logic behind an empowered 2nd Amendment. There Demonrats MUST stop their attempted take-over of the United States by revoking our Constitutional rights. Their arguments hold no water, and only programmed propagandists in league with their anti-American agenda buy into their nonsense. We should all promote this story, and demand the Democrats stop their tyrannical power grab, which is ultimately treason against the People of the United States.

  3. All we are experiencing today is for a powerful reason to make America as it should have been but we were so involved in material things we forgot to take care of our country, it is not late, POTUS opened our eyes, and the passion is there, what a wake up call! DONALD J TRUMP 2020, that 2020 is the vision!

  4. Good gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.

  5. Sign at gun show: “If you voted for Obama, we cannot sell you a gun…you are too stupid to own one”.

  6. I am for total gun control if you are a democrat. Seeing as how 90% or more of mass shooters are democrats I propose that no demograt be allowed to own a gun.
