De Blasio says pre-K expansion will curb student suicides

“I know it all” DeBlasio…

NY Post: Suicide prevention starts in preschool . . . or so says Dr. de Blasio.

The mayor on Sunday called the suicide epidemic sweeping city schoolkids “troubling” — and then said he believes his proposed pre-K program could help curb the trend.

“It’s a larger societal phenomenon,” the mayor said, referring to student suicide, which has claimed the lives of 10 public-school kids in the past two months.

“It is deeply troubling,” de Blasio told reporters at an Upper East Side press conference on housing issues. “Its not just in our public schools. We’re seeing this at the college level, too. We have to reach children earlier.

He said allowing educators to reach children at an earlier age will give youngsters “hope” and “opportunity.” “I really believe early childhood education is crucial to the whole equation because it is part of putting kids on a productive, positive path early and not letting them feel like they can’t make it,” the mayor said.

But not everyone appreciated de Blasio’s not-so-subtle plug for his pre-K agenda, which includes taxing the wealthy to finance it. “The whole world doesn’t revolve around pre-K,” said Mona Davids, president of the New York City Parents’ Union.

“Suicides have nothing to do with pre-K,’’ she said. “Shame on the mayor for connecting the two.” “This is about mental-health issues that need to be addressed. Kids get bullied and school officials don’t do anything.”

As The Post reported Sunday, Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña revealed the startling statistic before a group of city school principals during a closed-door meeting.

At that meeting, Fariña said she was “heartsick” to learn that 10 students had taken their own lives during her seven-week tenure. “I spoke to principals yesterday,” she said. “They have to understand, on top of academics . . . they also have to worry about their kids’ emotional needs.”

And what report did DeBlasio cite to prove that pre-kindergarten will help prevent suicides? This is just more rhetoric in DeBlasio’s push for universal pre-kindergarten – and a tax on the wealthy.

Good little mayor though – never let a crisis go to waste and never let it stop you from pushing your agenda.

  1. OMG! Children that age are way too young to handle information of that nature. I would be afraid that it would arouse their curiosity on the subject. Not really sure about that but I DO know that this guy is going to drag NYC down to the pits of hell. He is an atheist so you know where all his ideas are coming from……scary!

  2. School isn’t the solution to young kids killing themselves, school is the *cause* of it, a cause because the places are run like blasted jails, even being designed to look like such. That and the other students ceaseless attacking of others via actual bullying (and not media boo-hoo-bullying a.k.a. homosexual propaganda), the kids are also being taught malarkey in large numbers, they keep pushing back “sex-ed” (Read: porn ed) classes to younger and younger ages, and then teaching them outright lies, on top of giving age inappropriate information.

To say nothing of the access to the internet provided, which in truth is just a vector for corrupted students to spread their corruption by showing others what can be found, needless to say their computer security is non-existant, so bypassing filters and getting to filth is easy. To say nothing of the cameraphones they already have which have been used to large extent to make self-produced child porn. Take away the School, take away the Internet until such time as they can be responsible using it, and take away the vile little spy telescreens, show more Love, actually bother being an active parent instead of some federal wage-slave, and the suicides will drop (where do they learn how to kill themselves anyway?… oh right, internet.)

  3. Get ’em while they’re young… kids have got to made to believe their parents are racists who hate polar bears sometime!

  4. Educators and politicians are some of the most significant numbers in our society who routinely IGNORE their OWN reasearch…..pre-K and even Kindergarten make NO significant difference on gains in ANY AREA on academia or socialization processes. EVEN when gains are noted, the benefits become insignificant by around 3rd or 4th grade. The thrust of all this research is (and, believe me…some of it is meta-research…which means, a gathering together of the outcomes of TONS of research on the same subject over a long period of time…like 20-40 years’ worth)….THE FAMILY UNIT (or lack thereof) makes the most significant impact upon the rate of positive academic progress or socialization of child. “Intervention” from our public school system ….be it a great school or a “bad” school…..is at best, temporary in postive effect. So….this last cherry-picking by De Blasio is the same scare tactic as the Dem commercial about the Repubs dumping Grandma out of the wheelchair and over the cliff. Want to win an election? Want to pass an agenda? Scrape up something about child suicide or throwing Grandma over the cliff….connect it to your cause and, BINGO! You’ve got a soundbite that will probably work!
