Montvale, New Jersey will not be a sanctuary city, mayor vows

michael-ghassali

Mayor Michael Ghassali

Laws and legal immigration still mean something to some politicians.
From NorthJersey.com: As a Syrian immigrant whose family fled Aleppo in 1980, weeks before hundreds of civilians were killed in a brutal siege, Michael Ghassali knows well the horrors facing today’s refugees.
But as the mayor of Montvale, Ghassali said, his allegiance is to the laws of his adopted country – even those he may personally disagree with. That is why Ghassali has vowed that under his administration, Montvale will not be a sanctuary city.
“I will not be signing any executive orders that will ask our employees to defy federal laws. A mayor should not be advocating the defiance of federal laws,” Ghassali announced in a Facebook post last week that has elicited both praise and condemnation.
The statement was in response to pressure from various advocacy groups that Ghassali said have approached him to declare the borough a safe haven for undocumented immigrants illegal aliens.
President Donald Trump issued an executive order last month suspending travel to the United States from seven Muslim-majority countries and indefinitely barring Syrian refugees from coming into the country. The order has been blocked by an appeals court, and Trump has said he will issue a revised order. But it sparked protests across the country, and local politicians have taken a public position either supporting it or opposing it.
Trump also has called for a crackdown on illegal immigration. On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security issued a sweeping set of orders that authorize all agents to enforce the nation’s immigration laws more forcefully, instructing them to identify, apprehend and quickly deport every undocumented immigrant they encounter.
Several North Jersey towns have either approved or are considering resolutions to become sanctuary cities, a term that generally means local police would limit their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement officers.
Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed Khairullah, who is also a Syrian-born immigrant, issued an executive order in January declaring the borough a sanctuary city. “As an immigrant from a country ruled by a dictator, it is important to me that our commander in chief upholds the U.S. Constitution as the law of the land,” Khairullah said last month.
Ghassali recalled in an interview this week his experience entering the country at 15 years old and the hurdles his family faced.
In Syria, his father was a tailor, working hard for a middle-class life for his family of four children. Ghassali remembers always feeling safe in Aleppo, even at night. Nevertheless, the Islamist uprising, revolts against the secular government led mostly by the Muslim Brotherhood, had been brewing in the country since 1976.
“My father was wise enough to know what was going on. He told us, ‘At some point, this will not be a safe place to live.’ And he decided that we should leave,” Ghassali said.
In 1980, members of Ghassali’s family boarded a flight with green cards in hand and headed to New York City, where they had family from his father’s side waiting for their arrival. They settled in Dumont. Ghassali said he became a citizen in 1987.
“I know firsthand the vetting system is intense – it’s always been that way. I don’t know how much more intense it could get,” said Ghassali, a Republican who ran for mayor as an independent.
“I wish the administration spent more time analyzing the current process before issuing such an executive order,” said Ghassali. “They should spend the time to look at the current process before causing havoc among the refugees.”
Ghassali said he has family members who are refugees or have been killed in the war in Syria. “My whole network is either a refugee or has a family or friend who is a refugee. I feel it. It is very personal,” Ghassali said. But, he said, “I have to remove emotions out of this if I want to do my job.”
A close friend of Ghassali’s who attends the same Syriac Orthodox church in Teaneck has been in the country illegally for 15 years, he said. Ghassali said that declaring Montvale a sanctuary city would not change the reality of his friend’s situation. “He’s been scared for 15 years,” Ghassali said. “That doesn’t change when a mayor signs an executive order.”
Ghassali said he hoped his stance was not misconstrued as being against diversity. About one-fifth of Montvale’s approximately 8,000 residents are foreign-born, according to 2015 census. Twenty-two languages are spoken at home, Ghassali said.
Ghassali is married to an Iraqi immigrant. On his block alone, he said, his neighbors hail from India, Pakistan and parts of South America. “Montvale is not against refugees, against immigrants, against diversity,” he said. “We are as diverse as they come.”

The author of a book hammering Hillary Clinton says he now has full-time security

by COLIN CAMPBELL
The author of a controversial new book about Bill and Hillary Clinton said on Wednesday that he has arranged full-time security for himself.
Asked during a Bloomberg interview if he received any death threats over his controversial book, “Clinton Cash,” Peter Schweizer would only say he has “security.”
“I’ll just say we have security. And that security is not something that just came because we decided to have security. And we’ll just leave it at that,” he said.

pal-girls-islamic-jihad-w-gunsMy typical morning for the last few years has been to get up, pour a coffee, and turn on FoxNews. Within ten minutes I will have heard a list of one alarming thing after another, sending me into a cycle of searching out the atrocity-du-jour, and blogging about it, trying to sound the alarm as widely as possible.

And what is worse, it sets me off balance, and I spend my day being reactive instead of proactive.

Wayne Allyn Root on Celebrating Obama for the New Year!

Wayne Allyn Root
Celebrating Obama for the New Year!
Posted by Wayne Root on January 5, 2015
I am Obama’s college classmate from Columbia University, Class of ’83. Back in 1981 when my Columbia classmates heard my hero President Ronald Reagan had been shot, they erupted in joy. They celebrated by jumping up and down, cheering, hugging, and giving each other high-fives. They screamed, “YES! Reagan is dead. They got the bastard!” I witnessed it all, first hand. My radical leftist classmates thought a conservative legend was dead and this was cause for celebration. I remember thinking, “they are celebrating like it’s New Year’s Eve.” Afterall that’s what you do on New Years- celebrate!
That memory inspired me to write a column celebrating Obama here in the New Year 2015. Let’s not rehash the bad stuff…the disastrous stuff…the tragic stuff…the decline and perhaps even death of America at the hands of a radical Big Brother tyrant. That’s not the way to celebrate New Years. Let’s look at the bright side. You know- the glass is half full.
You might ask “What is the positive side of the Obama presidency?” Well there are a few groups that should celebrate.
For my fellow constitutional and second amendment patriots, Obama is the greatest gun salesman in history. Over 70 million guns have been purchased since Obama took office. This man opens his mouth, reads from the teleprompter, and INSTANTLY Americans are inspired to buy all-time record quantities of guns and ammo. If you’re a fan of the second amendment (or a gun dealer), Obama has been the answer to your prayers.
For my fellow fiscal conservatives and capitalists, Obama is the greatest gold salesman ever. Conservatives love gold. Gold after all is the antidote to a debt crisis and lack of confidence in a reckless or incompetent government. That’s why record sums of gold were bought during the past 6 years. Central bankers worldwide bought more gold in one recent year than in half a century (since 1964). Fiscal conservatives (and gold dealers) rejoice. Obama is a walking billboard for God, guns, and GOLD!
Obama is also the greatest thing to ever happen to print shop owners. While the rest of us are struggling to keep our heads above water, print shop owners can’t keep up with the demand for “Going Out of Business” and “Home For Sale by Bank” signs. And what about all the protest signs funded by communist groups announcing “What Do We Want? DEAD COPS.” Print shop owners Rejoice! You’ve never had it so good.
And then there are “English as a Second Language” teachers. There may be very few good jobs left in Obama’s America, but if you speak both English and Spanish, the sky is the limit. With the border wide open and Obama announcing amnesty for illegals, celebrate if you are a teacher of “English as a Second Language.” You have the most in-demand job in America for decades to come. Unfortunately, demand for prison guards may soon be even more in demand.
Obama is the greatest thing to ever happen to government bureaucrats. The future is bright if your goal is to sit in a windowless office handing out checks for welfare, food stamps, disability and unemployment, while complaining you are overworked and underpaid. With almost 20% of all Americans on food stamps alone, there’s enough work for you to last a lifetime…or at least 20 years, until you retire at age 45 and collect an obscene pension for the next 40 to 50 years for not working.
And what about the boom in basements! With Obama and his socialist cabal in control for another two years, basements are the new hip living space for young adults. At this moment 31% of all Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 live with their parents. Obama’s high taxes and massive regulations guarantee millions of college graduates will either stay unemployed, or underemployed in low wage jobs, forcing them to live in mommy and daddy’s basement for years to come. Basements are no longer lonely dusty places to store old furniture. In the age of Obama, they are where you store your 30 year old unemployed children.
Pharmaceutical companies are celebrating. A record 30 million Americans are dependent on anti-depressants. There would be many more, except millions of depressed Americans self-medicate with alcohol. If you sell drugs or booze, give a shout out this New Years to Obama, the greatest salesman for your products ever!
And then, of course there are the cop haters who are celebrating. To think you used to be misunderstood, hated pariahs. Today you are in favor- with Obama praising you for hating cops. He encourages you to protest, loot, burn and act like exactly what you are- idiots who have no interest in getting a job. But, no worry, this New Years you can come out of the closet, celebrate, and be openly YOU!
Unfortunately the rest of us are hiding in the closet, because you’re on the streets.
If you’re a radical Muslim terrorist, or just someone who sympathizes with radical Muslims (i.e. a Democrat) – CELEBRATE! Obama is the best thing to ever happened to you. Under Obama America has become a politically correct shell of its former self. Rest easy. No more “enhanced interrogations.” And if you’re caught, you’ll live like a king at Guantanamo, provided with a Koran, prayer rug, religiously approved food, basketball courts, and expensive lawyers. Then once you are rested up, you’ll be released back to the battlefield, ready to again cut off heads and slaughter women and little children. Obama is the best thing that ever happened to you.
If you’re Fidel and Raul Castro, celebrate Obama. By opening relations and trade, Obama saved Cuba from economic collapse and the certain death of communism. He asked for nothing in return. You get to remain a communist nation, jail your political opposition, steal the people’s income, while enjoying the prosperity that comes from doing business with America’s biggest companies. Celebrate Obama- the savior of communism- on New Years Day!
Finally we come to Vladamir Putin. He’s celebrating “like it’s 1999” this New Years. God handed him “the gift of a lifetime” in the form of Barack Obama. Obama pulled off a miracle for Putin and the Russian people. He made your bankrupt, decaying country look like a world power again. Not economically of course…but militarily. The collapse in the price of oil will wreak havoc on Russia’s economy. Even Obama can’t change that. But he made Putin significant, a leader on the world stage. He gave Russia’s demoralized military swagger again. Obama managed to put Mother Russia in the driver’s seat and America in the back seat.
The only question is…is this a coincidence, or was this Obama’s plan all along?
Yes, there’s certainly a lot to celebrate this New Years. Unfortunately it’s the enemies of America, American Exceptionalism, the American Dream, Judeo Christian Values, capitalism and cops who are doing most of the celebrating.
For the rest of us it’s two long years until we can celebrate “Obama-Free America.”

A Wayne Allyn Root Christmas

Wayne Allyn Root
Merry Christmas to all my friends, fans and loyal supporters. This is a day for reflecting on this great country and thanking God for all of our blessings.
Now many of you probably think I don’t like President Obama. That’s not true. I’ve actually been thinking of what gifts to give to my old Columbia college classmate for Christmas. I’ve come up with 15 holiday gift ideas for Obama and his family. Everyone of them fits him like a glove.
Here are the 15 perfect holiday gifts for Obama:
Number one…To remind Obama of the economy he created, may Michelle work in a part-time low wage job, with no benefits. It might do her some good to experience the real Obama economy.
Number two…I’d like to see Obama’s Secret Service disarmed, since he doesn’t think rest of us need guns for protection. What’s good for the goose, is good for the gander!
Number three…I’d like to remove the fence around the White House, since Obama doesn’t think we need any fence at our Southern border with Mexico, why should he need a fence around the White House. Either fences or walls work…or they don’t. If we don’t need one at the border…and Obama says there’s no border problem…then obviously a fence isn’t needed at the border to the White House either. Let’s all live with “the honor system.”
Number four…A Christmas dinner at White House prepared and served by illegal immigrants who just arrived from the Ebola Zone, since he thinks the rest of us shouldn’t worry about Ebola (or illegal immigration). Good luck and Bon Apetite. Oh by the way, you probably think the Ebola threat is gone. That’s because the media has agreed to partner with the Obama administration to coverup the truth. It was revealed just days ago that the CDC is monitoring over 1300 potential Ebola cases inside America right now. Did you know that? I didn’t think so.
Number five…Of course, that White House Christmas dinner should be prepared with careful adherence to the standards of Michelle’s “nutritious” public school lunch program. I hope Obama enjoys one stick of celery and one cracker. That should be yummy!
Number six…Just like Obama, I believe in “fairness” and “equality.” What could be more “fair” than seeing Obama’s health insurance cancelled like the rest of us. He promised “If you like your insurance, you can keep it.” I just lost mine. So have millions of others. It’s time for Obama to enjoy some of his own medicine. Besides…Michelle’s policy doesn’t provide coverage for pregnancy, Viagra or mental health issues. That’s not “fair.” So it’s gotta go!
Number seven…The end of all criminal background checks for any black employee hired at White House. Why not let Obama enjoy the same policy that his Equal Employment Opportunity Commission tried to enforce on every business in America. You didn’t know that, did you? Obama’s EEOC actually tried to ban background checks just for black potential employees. The courts struck it down.
Number eight…May Sasha & Malia enjoy their 2015 school year at a fine inner city public school. After all, Obama believes those teachers unions really “care about the kids.” Let’s try out his theory in the real world on his own kids.
Number nine…Since Obama is such a believer in climate change, may he spend the last two years of his Presidency riding around in a Prius, instead of his heavy, gas-guzzling bullet-proof limousine. And of course Air Force One has to go too. From now on, Obama flies coach…on American (the perfect airline for a guy who wants to fundamentally change America).
Number ten…If Obama comes under withering fire from terrorists, may he call his favorite General and find him asleep with orders that he not be disturbed for the night. A little taste of the last moments of our heroes at Benghazi might be the ideal Christmas gift for Obama!
Number eleven…Since Obama doesn’t want any of us to have coal anymore, I hope he gets coal in his Christmas stocking hanging above White House fireplace. May it always remind him of the plentiful cheap energy he took away from middle class Americans, in order to bankrupt and punish us for (and these were his words back in 2008) “clinging to our guns and Bibles.”
Number twelve…Also in that Christmas stocking I’d like to gift Obama two books he ought to read: the book that best describes what Obama has done to America, my national bestseller, “The Murder of the Middle Class”…and then there’s the biography about Obama’s life called “The Audacity of a Dope.”
Number thirteen…Don’t forget an intrusive IRS audit under the tree, ordered by Valerie Jarrett. I hope this IRS audit extends to Jonathan Gruber, the architect of Obamacare who accepted over $1.4 million dollars to design a healthcare program to deceive the “stupid voters”…and Jack Lew, the U.S. Treasury Secretary who keeps his money in the Cayman Islands…and of course the IRS audit should extend to Michelle Obama’s Princeton Black Alumni classmate- whose company received hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to design the Obamacare web site (that did not work).
Number fourteen…I gift the Obama family a week underground in an Israeli bomb shelter, fearing for their lives alongside the citizens of Israel, whose lives Obama has placed in peril again and again- with his support and sympathy for radical terrorists…Palestinian terrorists…Iran’s nuclear bomb…and of course the wonderful “Arab Spring.” Not to mention his incompetence towards ISIS. Yes, you’ve made the world a much safer place Mr. Obama…for all of the enemies of America, freedom, capitalism, Christianity and Israel. Is that a coincidence?
*And finally my last Christmas wish for Obama…
IMPEACHMENT in the New Year…fraud convictions and prison time for every Obama aide involved in the Obamacare deception and the IRS scandal…and a partridge in a pear tree.
WOW, wouldn’t that list make for a Happy New Year!
I haven’t even gotten to Obama’s anti-police propaganda inciting the cold-blooded assassination of two New York City policemen only days ago…or Marxist Obama doing a big favor for his communist comrades Fidel & Raul Castro by saving Cuba from imminent economic collapse…I’ll save all that for next year.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone.

GQ magazine names Obama as one of "least influential" people of 2014

Bush's fault
First, chairman of Stratfor George Friedman calls Obama’s a failed presidency. (Stratfor describes itself “a leader in the field of global intelligence”.) Friedman writes:

We have now entered the final phase of Barack Obama’s presidency, and like those of several other presidents since World War II, it is ending in what we call a state of failure.

Now GQ magazine calls Obama one of the “least influential” people of 2014 — a list that includes such inconsequential luminaries as actor Shia LaBeouf and the Brazilian soccer team.
Ouch.
At the end of the year, GQ publishes its list of “least influential” people of that year, defined as “people who took up vast clouds of oxygen, gave us back nothing of use, and probably helped accelerate the death of our planet.”
This is Obama’s second year in a row on this list.
Although the magazine insists their list of Least Influential People of 2014 is “in no particular order,” nevertheless Barack Obama is number two, after number one’s Bono and U2. Here’s what GQ‘s Drew Magary says about Obama:

Why are you still on Martha’s Vineyard?! Missouri is BURNING. Putin is conquering Europe. The CDC is playing nude Twister with Ebola patients. U2 is forcing bad songs on everyone. The NSA won’t stop watching me masturbate. I need you ON THIS. Are you even president anymore? When Obama got blasted for golfing shortly after ISIS beheaded journalist James Foley, he said, “I should’ve anticipated the optics.” How do you win the presidency without knowing that golfing makes you look rich and indifferent?

Here’s GQ’s unranked list of the 30 least influential people of 2014:

  1. Bono and U2
  2. Barack Obama
  3. Donald Sterling
  4. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas
  5. Zach Braff
  6. Roger Goodell
  7. Stephen A. Smith
  8. Dwyane Wade
  9. CNN
  10. Eric Cantor
  11. Derek Jeter
  12. Jay Nixon
  13. Rick Perry
  14. Benny Johnson
  15. The Brazilian soccer team
  16. Johnny Depp
  17. Cliven Bundy
  18. Suey Park
  19. Tom Wheeler
  20. Chris Christie
  21. Shia LaBeouf
  22. John McCain
  23. Woody Allen
  24. The Secret Service
  25. Robin Thicke
  26. Sarah Palin
  27. Dinesh D’Souza

What the polls say: Will Republicans gain a majority in Senate?

So much hinges on the election tomorrow, November 4.

  • If the Democrats keep their majority in the Senate, and the Republicans keep their majority in the House, we’ll have two more years of President Ebola doing what he wants, ignoring Congress by issuing executive orders (or not even that), and two more years in which a Democrat-controlled Senate would approve Obama’s Supreme Court nomination(s).
  • If the Democrats keep the Senate and win a majority in the House, then all hell breaks lose. We’ll go back to the first four years of the POS’s presidency, in which the Republicans can’t even mount a feeble effort against his agenda. Remember Obamacare? This time around, we’ll get gun control, amnesty for illegals, death panels, and whatever else in the evil POS’s Pandora box.
  • Only if the GOP keeps a majority in the House and wins a majority in the Senate is there any hope (no guarantees) for derailing the POS and his road to Hell.

So, what are the polls saying?
To begin, no poll expects the Republicans to lose the House. On the contrary, the expectation is that Repubs will gain even more seats in the House.
On the probability that Republicans would gain a majority in the Senate:

Click here for Senate races in Kentucky, Georgia, Arkansas, Louisiana, Iowa.
Here’s a quote, from Washington Post:

Prominent Democratic strategists are growing increasingly nervous that the national political environment is not only bad for their side but is moving in the wrong direction in the final days before the election, a trend that could not only cost them control of the Senate but also visit double-digit House losses on the party. “The environment has settled and it’s bad,” said one senior Democratic party operative closely monitoring the party’s prospects this fall. The source added that Democratic candidates’ numbers among independents and seniors — two critically important voting blocs — have begun to erode; “they are just not as friendly to us as they once were,” the source explained. In conversations Wednesday with more than a dozen Democratic strategists deeply involved in this campaign — a few who were willing to speak on the record, a majority who were not — there was a widespread pessimism about the party’s chances Nov. 4.

Everything depends on turnout.

Democrats have soured on their toxic infatuation with the POS. Their lack of enthusiasm will depress their turnout, which is why desperate Demonrats are resorting to the worst kind of fear-mongering and race-baiting.
In Alabama, fliers distributed in largely black communities warn voters to cast ballots or else they’ll lose their food stamps, Section 8 housing, Medicaid, unemployment benefits, and even “land may be given to extremist groups to honor klansmen.” Here’s a copy of the flier, obtained by The Washington Times:
Alabama 2014 Dem flyer
Using the Ferguson shooting of Mike Brown, Democratic campaign materials aimed at getting out the black vote are featuring references to lynchings, Jim Crow-era signs, racial unrest, and the Ku Klux Klan. Here are two images (source):
2014 race baiting1
If you think the race-baiting and fear-mongering are too absurd to be believable, think again.
Just this morning, I was in a Twitter war with a FOTM reader @JusPauperum1 who insisted, but could produce no source citation or evidence, that the GOP’s “economic policies explicitly deny care for the poor, the sick, and the unemployed,” and the GOP wants to “eliminate SNAP [food stamps], unions, unemployment benefits, and healthcare”.
@JusPauperum1 even claimed that the GOP bailed out Wall Street banks, when it was Barack Obama who did the bailout. @JusPauperum1’s ignorance and brain-washedness is nothing less than stunning.
So, fellow patriots, do you really want another two years of Ebola-gate, open borders-gate, IRS-gate, VA hospital-gate, Benghazi-gate, Fast ‘n Furious-gate, NSA surveillance-gate, ISIS-gate, and a disastrous and adrift foreign policy?

Ebola Nurse Kaci Hickox Not Quite Playing By The Rules. UPDATE!!!!!!!

If you read the beginning of this story when she arrived at the airport they were pretty rude. Then forced her into Tented isolation for a day or two. I know she just came back from Obamaloville, but she had no signs what so ever.
OK so I could see her being a bit cranky about that. But seems to me she is now flaunting some supposed “self quarantine” deal she had made. Sure she’s not symptomatic. No one is….until they start spewing forth noxious crap from satan himself. So do you think she should just resume her life, or maybe kick back and catch up on Netflix? I hate the idea of the Gov starting to order mandatory isolation’s. Let me know what you think. Thanks,

 Steve

According to https://freedomoutpost.com/  our little miss sunshine has lied.

Quarantined Nurse Kaci Hickox Misled Public – Works for CDC – Her Attorney was White House Visitor & Tied to Al Sharpton.
Now why does this not surprise me?

She has also opened herself up for the destruction of her career. This is copied from the article at Freedom outpost.
“Anyone may file a complaint against a nurse for violation of the Nurse Practice Act. Normally, the complaints are filed by colleagues, other nurses or physicians. However, with the actions of Ms. Hickox out in the open, the general public has every reason to question this nurses’ ability to follow any nurse practice act which indicates that the professional registered nurse has a duty to public health safety.
Maybe Ms. Hickox should have thought all of this through before opening her mouth and engaging in making herself a media spectacle. It’s possible that Ms. Hickox was willing to sacrifice her career in exchange for fame, millions of dollars or both in order to undermine the public health safety at the behest of the CDC. Should that be the case, Ms. Hickox should be ashamed to call herself a professional nurse.
If anyone would like to lodge a complaint against Ms. Hickox for unprofessional conduct and violations of standard professional conduct, the address for both Texas and Maine Nursing Boards are listed below.”
So if you would like to give her a hand with the professional suicide she seems to crave , please email and please be polite..   Steve

‘I don’t want her within three feet of anyone’: Governor threatens to arrest Ebola nurse after she defied quarantine to go for a bike ride and order pizza

  • Nurse Kaci Hickox and her boyfriend Ted Wilbur left their home on Thursday morning with their bikes for an hour-long ride
  • The 33-year-old said: ‘There is nothing to stop me from going for a bike ride in my home town’
  • Governor Paul LePage said: ‘I don’t want her within three feet of anyone’
  • Demanded that she take a blood test and threatened to arrest her
  • She spoke to the press outside the home in Fort Kent, Maine, on Wednesday night, saying she will continue to fight the Ebola quarantine
  • Hickox shook the hand of MailOnline’s reporter at the scene and said: ‘You could hug me. You could shake my hand. I would not give you Ebola’

The Governor of Maine has threatened to arrest Nurse Kaci Hickox after she broke the state’s mandatory Ebola quarantine by saying: ‘I don’t want her within three feet of anyone.’

The 33-year-old, who tested negative for the deadly disease earlier this week, defied the guidelines by going on a bike ride with partner Ted Wilbur.

Later in the day, the pair also had a pepperoni and mushroom pizza delivered to their home in Fort Kent, Maine, before settling down to watch The Avengers film.

Her actions enraged Governor Paul LePage with lawyers from the state going to court to demand the nurse give a blood test.

‘This could be resolved today. She has been exposed and she’s not cooperative, so force her to take a test. It’s so simple’ he told ABC.

GovernorPaulLePage has said he will ‘exercise the full extent of his authority’ to rein the nurse in and has insisted: ‘I don’t want her to be within three feet of anyone’

The 33-year-old nurse went on a bike ride with her partner Ted Wilbur this morning as she defied the mandatory Ebola quarantine placed on her by the state of Maine

Later in the day the pair had a pizza delivered to their home Fort Kent, Maine, and waved to the waiting media as they opened the door

Miss Hickox broke her quarantine at 9am and took an ATV trail behind her home for the hour-long ride. A state trooper who had been stationed outside the house followed her in a police cruiser.

‘It’s just good to be out,’ Miss Hickox told MailOnline as she left.

Maine police were monitoring her movements and public interactions but there was no court order to arrest the nurse.

As she returned home, she said: ‘There is no court action against me. There is nothing to stop me from going for a bike ride in my home town.’

Hickox said that she had not spoken to her lawyers about the ride and it was her decision to go out and get exercise after a day of being cooped up in her house.

The state trooper who followed them by car said he was just monitoring Miss Hickox’s actions and had no intention of arresting her.

The nurse did not say whether she would venture outside again on Thursday, adding that she had to return home to prepare for her daily temperature check for Ebola symptoms from the state’s Center for Disease Control.

Wilbur said the couple deliberately chose to ride their bikes on a 16-mile trail away from town to minimize their chances of bumping into people who might fear that they could catch Ebola from them.

‘We went the way we did and not through the town. We did not go to the grocery store.

‘We are not trying to get anyone sick — we don’t believe we can get anyone sick — and we are not trying to put anyone at risk,’ he said.

Fort Kent police chief Tom Pelletier called in the house and offered to bring the couple anything they need to lessen the need for them to go into town, Wilbur added.

Wilbur, a nursing student at the University of Maine at Fort Kent pointed out that it is not just aid workers whose lives are turned upside down by the quarantine rules but their families too. ‘I am not able to go to school.

‘If we had children they probably wouldn’t be able to go to school. I have an exam Monday that I am not allowed to take and an assignment I cannot turn in.’

The university said he ‘voluntarily’ agreed not to attend classes, but Wilbur said: ‘It’s voluntary if you count that as people saying “Do you agree you can’t come to class?” and I say “Do I have a choice?” and they say: “No” and I say: “Well I agree then.” ‘

Hickox contends there is no need for quarantine because she’s showing no symptoms.

According to Ebola experts, a blood test for Ebola would only be positive if Hickox was displaying symptoms of the virus – which she says she is not.

The Ebola virus is only detectable in the blood if the disease has significantly progressed.

Miss Hickcox has not made it clear whether she would or would not be agree to taking a blood test.

LePage later added that the nurse was causing a lot of tension and worry in the community of Fort Kent.

‘I don’t want her within three feet of anyone,’ LePage told NBC.

On Wednesday night, Miss Hickox left the home she has been ordered to stay inside for 21 days in order to speak with the press about her ‘frustrating’ situation.

Nurse quarantined in NJ: "The US must treat returning health care workers with dignity and humanity"

hickox
Dallas News: (Editor’s note: Kaci Hickox, a nurse with degrees from the University of Texas at Arlington and the Johns Hopkins University, has been caring for Ebola patients while on assignment with Doctors Without Borders in Sierra Leone. Upon her return to the U.S. on Friday, she was placed in quarantine at a New Jersey hospital. She has tested negative in a preliminary test for Ebola, but the hospital says she will remain under mandatory quarantine for 21 days and will be monitored by public health officials. Dr. Seema Yasmin, a Dallas Morning News staff writer, worked with Hickox as a disease detective with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. With Yasmin’s help, Hickox wrote this first-person piece exclusively for the News.)
I am a nurse who has just returned to the U.S. after working with Doctors Without Borders in Sierra Leone – an Ebola-affected country. I have been quarantined in New Jersey. This is not a situation I would wish on anyone, and I am scared for those who will follow me.
I am scared about how health care workers will be treated at airports when they declare that they have been fighting Ebola in West Africa. I am scared that, like me, they will arrive and see a frenzy of disorganization, fear and, most frightening, quarantine.
I arrived at the Newark Liberty International Airport around 1 p.m. on Friday, after a grueling two-day journey from Sierra Leone. I walked up to the immigration official at the airport and was greeted with a big smile and a “hello.”
I told him that I have traveled from Sierra Leone and he replied, a little less enthusiastically: “No problem. They are probably going to ask you a few questions.”
He put on gloves and a mask and called someone. Then he escorted me to the quarantine office a few yards away. I was told to sit down. Everyone that came out of the offices was hurrying from room to room in white protective coveralls, gloves, masks, and a disposable face shield.
One after another, people asked me questions. Some introduced themselves, some didn’t. One man who must have been an immigration officer because he was wearing a weapon belt that I could see protruding from his white coveralls barked questions at me as if I was a criminal.
Two other officials asked about my work in Sierra Leone. One of them was from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They scribbled notes in the margins of their form, a form that appeared to be inadequate for the many details they are collecting.
I was tired, hungry and confused, but I tried to remain calm. My temperature was taken using a forehead scanner and it read a temperature of 98. I was feeling physically healthy but emotionally exhausted.
Three hours passed. No one seemed to be in charge. No one would tell me what was going on or what would happen to me. I called my family to let them know that I was OK. I was hungry and thirsty and asked for something to eat and drink. I was given a granola bar and some water. I wondered what I had done wrong.
Four hours after I landed at the airport, an official approached me with a forehead scanner. My cheeks were flushed, I was upset at being held with no explanation. The scanner recorded my temperature as 101. The female officer looked smug. “You have a fever now,” she said.
I explained that an oral thermometer would be more accurate and that the forehead scanner was recording an elevated temperature because I was flushed and upset.
I was left alone in the room for another three hours. At around 7 p.m., I was told that I must go to a local hospital. I asked for the name and address of the facility. I realized that information was only shared with me if I asked.
Eight police cars escorted me to the University Hospital in Newark. Sirens blared, lights flashed. Again, I wondered what I had done wrong.
I had spent a month watching children die, alone. I had witnessed human tragedy unfold before my eyes. I had tried to help when much of the world has looked on and done nothing.
At the hospital, I was escorted to a tent that sat outside of the building. The infectious disease and emergency department doctors took my temperature and other vitals and looked puzzled. “Your temperature is 98.6,” they said. “You don’t have a fever but we were told you had a fever.”
After my temperature was recorded as 98.6 on the oral thermometer, the doctor decided to see what the forehead scanner records. It read 101. The doctor felts my neck and looked at the temperature again. “There’s no way you have a fever,” he said. “Your face is just flushed.” My blood was taken and tested for Ebola. It came back negative.
I sat alone in the isolation tent and thought of many colleagues who will return home to America and face the same ordeal. Will they be made to feel like criminals and prisoners?
I recalled my last night at the Ebola management center in Sierra Leone. I was called in at midnight because a 10-year-old girl was having seizures. I coaxed crushed tablets of Tylenol and an anti-seizure medicine into her mouth as her body jolted in the bed. It was the hardest night of my life. I watched a young girl die in a tent, away from her family.
With few resources and no treatment for Ebola, we tried to offer our patients dignity and humanity in the face of their immense suffering.
The epidemic continues to ravage West Africa. Recently, the World Health Organization announced that as many as 15,000 people have died from Ebola. We need more health care workers to help fight the epidemic in West Africa.  The U.S. must treat returning health care workers with dignity and humanity.
Well you are dealing with the government, since when do they care about dignity and humanity? The nurse should be thankful for the treatment she is receiving while being monitored for carrying a potentially-deadly virus. At least she’s not at a VA facility.
P.S. Guess where the nurse works at (not once mentioned in the article)?  From her LinkedIn page:
“Epidemic Intelligence Service fellow based in Las Vegas (Southern Nevada Health District). The Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is a two year fellowship in applied epidemiology with the US Center for Disease Control (CDC). Instruction focus includes applied epidemiology, biostatistics, public health surveillance, scientific writing, and working with the media, as well as emerging public health issues.”

Both CDC and U.S. Army say Ebola can be transmitted by air

From the beginning of the Ebola epidemic last spring in West Africa, the federal government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had insisted that the deadly viral hemorrhagic fever (in the infection’s horrific end stage, the victim bleeds from every orifice) can only be transmitted via direct contact with a victim’s bodily fluids — blood, vomit, urine, feces, sweat, nasal discharge, or semen.
This, despite a Canadian research in 2012 which found the Ebola virus to be transmitted by air between one animal species (pigs) and another (monkeys).
On Oct. 2, 2014, however, the CDC changed their minds.
For the first time, the CDC, in the person of its director Tom Frieden, cryptically admitted that, “in theory,” a sneeze or cough “could” spread the virus from someone experiencing Ebola symptoms. Frieden did not explain what “in theory” means. (See “CDC now admits ‘in theory’ Ebola can be transmitted by air“)
Imagine my surprise when, on the tip of a reader of this blog, I discovered that the United States Army had known about this all along, since 2011 — that the Ebola virus can be transmitted by air, albeit in “rare” instances.
Army Ebola
On pages 116-117 of Medical Management of Biological Casualties Handbook (7th Edition), published by the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases in Sept. 2011, is said:

“Lassa, CCHF, Ebola and Marburg viruses may be particularly prone to nosocomial spread due to periods of high viremia corresponding with bleeding propensity. In several instances, secondary infections among contacts and medical personnel without direct bodily fluid exposure have been documented. These instances have prompted concern of a rare phenomenon of aerosol transmission of infection.”

Here’s a screenshot I took of the passage:
Army Ebola pp. 116-117
Note that:

  • The word “nosocomial” is defined as “Originating or taking place in a hospital, acquired in a hospital, especially in reference to an infection.”
  • The word “viremia” is defined as “The presence of a virus in the blood.”
  • In the passage above, “high viremia” simply means the presence of a lot of Ebola viruses in the blood.
  • The word “aerosol” means “A fine spray or mist.”

Translated into simpler English, the passage from the U.S. Army medical handbook should read:

The Ebola virus may be particularly prone to spread in a hospital environment where Ebola patients with a lot of the virus in their blood are bleeding profusely. “Several” instances of Ebola infections had resulted among contacts and medical personnel without direct bodily fluid exposure. These “rare” instances have prompted concern that Ebola can be transmitted via a fine spray or mist.

Translated into even simpler English, that means you can catch Ebola from inhaling microscopic particles of the blood or vomit or sneeze or cough spewed into the air by someone who is very sick with Ebola, even if you think you were following the CDC guidelines by making no bodily contact with the bodily fluids of the infected.
Read the Medical Management of Biological Casualties Handbook for yourself, here.
