Morgan Stanley’s business confidence index has biggest drop since 2008 financial crisis

J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. is an American multinational investment bank and financial services company headquartered in New York City. JPMorgan Chase is the largest bank in the United States, and the sixth largest bank in the world by total assets as of 2018, to the amount of $2.535 trillion. It is the world’s most valuable bank by market capitalization and was named one of the top stocks to buy in 2019.

The Morgan Stanley Business Conditions Index (MSBCI) is an economic barometer based on an internal monthly canvass of industry analysts in JPMorgan’s North America Equity Research. The MSBCI measures general analyst sentiment as well as component indicators that gauge financing, advance bookings, pricing, hiring, capital spending, and expectations. Since its inception in June 2002, the MSBCI has served as a valuable and effective instrument for anticipating directional moves in the U.S. economy.

Morgan Stanley just published its latest Business Conditions Index and it is shocking.

As reported by Maggie Fitzgerald for CNBC, June 13, 2019:

Morgan Stanley’s Business Conditions Index, which captures turning points in the economy, fell by 32 points in June, to a level of 13 from a level of 45 in May. This drop is the largest one-month decline on record and the lowest level since December 2008 during the financial crisis, according to the firm.

Morgan Stanley said June’s conditions index reading showed notable declines in hiring, hiring plans, capex plans, and business conditions exceptions.

Economist Ellen Zentner said in a note to clients that the sharp MSBCI decline “shows a sharp deterioration in sentiment this month that was broad-based across sectors. Fundamental indicators point to a broad softening of activity, but analysts did not widely attribute the weakening to [Trump’s] trade policy.”

In addition to the sharp drop in the Business Confidence Index, here are other economic indicators of a possible economic slowdown:

  • Last Friday’s much-worse-than-expected jobs report from the Labor Department, showing that the U.S. economy added just 75,000 jobs in May.
  • A report on Thursday showed a spike in jobless claims last week.
  • Manufacturing activity last month grew at the slowest pace in two years.
  • The manufacturing subindex business conditions fell sharply to zero, the lowest level for the subindex on record.
  • The services subindex also fell to 18 from 35.

Meanwhile, another CNBC report on June 12 says “risks are rising for an oil price spike as tensions between the U.S. and Iran increase” which would further exacerbate business confidence.

Analysts say oil could be more than 10% higher, but if the situation in the Middle East intensifies, there are risks of price spikes that take oil to as high as $100 a barrel this summer.

Four years ago, in June 2015, Bob Johnson wrote in Veterans Today that the powerful Israeli lobby, American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), was trying to push the U.S. into a war against Iran for Israel’s benefit. (See “Yinon Plan“)

As Iranian economy nears total collapse, Iran bans men from looking at women during Ramadan

Men in Iran have been ordered not to look at women during Ramadan as part of a round of draconian restrictions imposed by the increasingly isolated regime.

In a sign of frustration with growing civil discontent and economic pain caused by US sanctions, hardliners in Iran’s government are forcing through unusually strict social diktats to bring people into line. The country’s judiciary has announced that those eating in public during the fasting period are also in breach of laws and will be prosecuted.

Iranian women are not exempt from the hard line religious rules.

Since 1980 Iranian women have been required to wear a headscarf in public at all times while in Iran, and if found violating those rules, they are subject to two months in prison or a $25 fine, according to the Associated Press.

As protests against headscarves have intensified since 2017, Iranian law enforcement have toughened their stance against dissidents. One such example is human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoude, who received a seven-year prison sentence just for defending women’s rights activists.

“My personal advice to women is to respect the hijab even more than before and gentlemen must avoid looking directly at female passersby,” Gholam- Hossein Esmaili, a judiciary spokesperson said.

“Anyone ignoring these instructions during the Ramadan will be committing an offense and should expect some punishment from the law enforcement units.”

Those who break the rules will be punished, from fines to arrest and imprisonment, depending on the crime.

Along with banning men from looking at women, the Iranian government also announced bans on eating in public, and playing music in cars, as part of a new social crackdown. The morality police in Iran added that they will now arrest anyone playing music on their car radio and will tow their car away and hand them a heavy fine.

The strict new rules are said to be a product of Iran’s increasing civil unrest, allowing the government to maintain some semblance of control over its discontented people.

Iranian authorities are also investigating viral videos of Iranian schoolgirls and some teachers smiling while dancing to a pop song by U.S.-Iranian rapper Sassy. Officials have deployed specialist teams to determine the source of the video.

“The enemy is trying different ways to create anxiety among the people including by spreading these disturbing videos,” Iran’s Education minister Mohammad Bathaei said, according to The Daily Mail. “I’m certain there’s some kind of political plot behind the publication of these devious clips in schools.”

Iran’s Guardian Councilmember Ayatollah Abbas Ka’bi called the videos fuel for “the enemy’s cultural war” against Iran.

Iran’s society has felt the pressure from the devalued currency, the Rial, which has nearly collapsed. Last week the value of US dollar against the Rial reached record high with one dollar selling at 16,000 Rials on black markets.

Iran’s economy is beset by a near 50 percent inflation; its currency has almost collapsed; labor and civil servants strikes are commonplace, and the conservative establishment faces an increasing women’s rights movement. Recently, Iranian male and female students have been protesting Iran’s mandatory headscarf law.

In addition, Iran’s agriculture industry is in critical condition.

Recent nationwide floods have left farming lands of 26 provinces in ruin and diseases are threatening millions in the rural areas of Iran.

Even beyond those crises, recent changes in the country’s leadership structure suggest an internal clampdown on any open challenge to the regime’s authority at home.

Last month the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed the fiery General Hossein Salami as the new commander of the Revolutionary Guard, and the ultra-conservative clergy Ebrahim Raeesi as the chief judge.

However, senior Iranian officials have warned about the public discontent turning into street protests, as food and fuel rationing similar to those during the war with Iraq have been suggested by the government as options to deal with the shortages.

Hossein Salami of the Revolutionary Guard said: “The holy month of Ramadan is a reminder to us for being steadfast in our confrontation with the world arrogance as they seem to have a war deployment against us in all economic, cultural and social fronts, but not in physical manner. Our mission is to block all their paths and defuse their plots by any means we can.”

Rouhani’s first deputy Eshagh Jahangir has said that the high inflation and fall in Iranian people’s purchasing power “are the real issues that threaten our country, not US.”

Speaking to a group of provincial governors recently Jahangir said, “What should worry all of us is the wrath and hatred of the public against the authorities and the system that can not deliver to them”.

Colluding with America’s enemy? Dianne Feinstein dines with Iranian minister

Demorats are always kissing up to America’s enemies…

From NY Post: Sen. Dianne Feinstein met with the Iranian foreign minister for dinner even as the Trump administration sent an aircraft carrier strike group to the region to respond to the Islamic Republic’s threats against US forces in the Middle East.

Feinstein, who sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee, met with Javad Zarif a few weeks ago when he was in the US, Politico reported on Thursday.

The California Democrat said the dinner was “arranged in consultation with the State Department.”

”The office was in touch with State in advance of the meeting to let them know it was happening and to get an update on U.S.-Iran activity,” Feinstein’s office said.

Zarif worked with former Secretary of State John Kerry on the 2015 nuclear deal brokered by the Obama administration with the country and other global powers — including Russia, France, England and China.
President Trump, who withdrew from the accord in May 2018, has accused Kerry of continuing to have conversations with Iran and said he should be prosecuted for violating the Logan Act.

Asked about Feinstein’s meeting with Zarif, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blasted the senator and Kerry for engaging Iran. ”These acts border — we all know the Logan Act — we all know the risks that is taken when people act as private citizens on behalf of the United States government,” Pompeo said during an interview on “Fox and Friends.”

The Logan Act, which was enacted in 1799, forbids private citizens from communicating with a foreign government having a dispute with the US. No one has ever been prosecuted under it.

The Trump administration, responding to Iranian threats against US forces in the Middle East, deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group and B-52 bombers to the region earlier this month.
Pentagon officials are expected to brief members of the administration’s national security team Thursday on plans to send 10,000 troops to the Middle East to counter the threats, the Associated Press reported.

Rabbi Yisrael Ariel declares Jewish holy war against Christians & Muslims

Freshman Congresswoman Ilhan Omar recently declared, “This is not going to be country of white people”. Meanwhile, Muslim children in Philadelphia sing songs about torturing, killing, and chopping off the heads of their enemies.

But it’s not just Muslims who are bent on killing Christians.

Yisrael Ariel, 80, the former chief rabbi of the Israeli settlement in the Sinai Peninsula during the years when the Sinai was controlled by Israel, is the founder of the Temple Institute, an organization in Israel aimed at reinstating animal sacrificial worship and building the third Jewish temple on the Temple Mount that is currently occupied by the Islamic mosque, Dome of the Rock. Ariel is also involved in the effort to revive the Sanhedrin — a national rabbinical court of Jewish law in Israel.

If you think the Muslim jihad or holy war against infidels is bad, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

On September 9, 2015, in Jerusalem, Yisrael Ariel was recorded as declaring that the whole world must be brought under the Sanhedrin rule of the Seven Noahide Laws, by war. Males who refuse to follow the Seven Laws — Christians and Muslims — will be killed, until “there is no more Christianity, no more Islam.”

Below are quotes from Rabbi Ariel’s talk:

“What power does the Sanhedrin have with respect to the other nations of the world?…. Maimonides [a Jewish rabbi of the Middle Ages] says that they must agree to follow the Seven Noahide Laws.”

Just as there is a commandment to conquer the land of Israel, there is a commandment to fight sanctioned laws…. Who makes the decision to embark on a sanctioned war? King David asks the Sanhedrin!…. Maimonides says that King David went to the Sanhedrin and asked them if he could go out and conquer. Everything that David did was sanctioned by the High Court…. Then he [David] went out to conquer Northern Syria and Aleppo….”

Non-Jews who do not follow the seven Noahide Laws, such as ‘Thou shalt not kill’ and ‘Thou shalt not steal’, etc., you proclaim peace to them, meaning, you ask them ‘Do you follow the seven laws?’. If so, we will allow you to live. If not, you kill all of their males, by sword. You only leave the women…. They must all agree to follow the seven Laws. And that is how you impose the seven Laws on that city.

Someone just said: ‘We don’t have the might to fight.’ But who decides if we have might or not? God! He gives you the might to raise an army. Therefore, he is the one who commanded [us] to go from city to city, to conquer them and to impose the seven Laws [throughout] the world. That is the job of the [Jewish] messiah, among others….

We will conquer Iraq, Turkey…. We will get to Iran too. We will impose the seven Noahide Laws on all these places. But installing does not mean with courts! Rather, it means with war! But not to just kill. Just the opposite. You say ‘I call upon you in peace.’ If they raise the flag [of surrender] and say, ‘From now on, there is no more Christianity, no more Islam. The mosques and the Christian spires and their crosses come down, from now on we follow the seven Noahide Laws.’ This is a task of the messiah, to bring the entire world to the seven Laws, for real….

Therefore, Maimonides says that if you see a person in the street who does not follow the seven Laws…if you have the might, you have to kill him. If you catch [U.S. President] Obama on the street and you know that he does not follow the seven Laws, etc., you are commanded to kill him…and the sooner the better….

If someone threatens you, to ruin you, to kill you, you kill him first. But there are numerous levels to the snake, and you have to go level by level…. May we all merit to follow the commandments, and to see the messiah follow these commandments.”

Louis Farrakhan leads “death to America” chant in Iran

Shocker, not.

From Fox News: Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, a notorious anti-Semite who recently compared Jewish people to termites, led a “Death to America” chant Sunday during a solidarity trip to Iran.

Farrakhan’s trip came ahead of the Trump administration’s re-implementation of U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic on Monday.

Speaking to law school students at the University of Tehran, the 85-year-old Farrakhan said “America has never been a democracy,” and also led a “Death to Israel” chant at the end of his talk, according to Iranian news agencies.

“Today, I warn the American government that sanctioning Iran is a big mistake,” he said at a meeting with the Secretary of Iran’s Expediency Council, Mohsen Rezaei. Farrakhan noted his belief America is conspiring against Iran.

Farrakhan’s trip coincided with the 39th anniversary of the 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran, when more than 50 American diplomats and civilians were held hostage for 444 days. The incident kicked off the Islamic Revolution, and Farrakhan told an Iranian audience that black Americans should be considered among the revolutionaries. The infamous activist cited the actions of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khomeni, who ordered the release of black Americans among the 1979 captives.

Video of Farrakhan leading a “Death to America” chant once again sparked calls for Democratic leaders to distance themselves from the controversial figure. Several prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama, have interacted or taken pictures with Farrakhan.

Donald Trump Jr. slammed Democrats Monday on Twitter. “When will the democrats disavow this guy? Answer: NEVER,” Trump Jr. tweeted.

Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz called on “all decent people” to condemn Farrakhan after he tweeted he wasn’t anti-Semite but “anti-termite.”

“Nazis use the word ‘termites’ to dehumanize Jews and accuse them of destroying everything good about the world,” Dershowitz explained on “FOX & Friends.”

Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, known as America’s Rabbi, also called on leaders to condemn him. “A new low for arch Jew-hater Farrakhan,” Boteach tweeted. “Who has heard of an American going to a foreign country and chanting ‘Death to America?’ Where is Bill Clinton who appeared with him recently, and Barack Obama, photographed with him, and Cory Booker to condemn him?

Farrakhan has previously said “powerful Jews are my enemy” and “white folks are going down.”

Linda Sarsour, a Women’s March co-founder and pro-Palestinian activist, has repeatedly praised Farrakhan and refused to condemn him. Tamika Mallory, another Women’s March leader, called him the “GOAT” or “Greatest of all time,” and served as a national organizer for his “Justice or Else” rally in 2015.

Israeli activist, Hen Mazzig, tweeted out video of the “Death to America” chant. “Nothing, Linda Sarsour?” Mazzig wrote.

Muslim clerics alarmed over 'exponential' increase of Christian converts in Iran

Something extraordinary and wondrous is happening in Iran.
It is the Light of Christ.

Mohabat News, the Iranian Christian News Agency, reports on August 11, 2017, that “Christianity has been growing at an exponential rate in the last couple of decades in Iran, causing the Islamic government a great deal of concern.”
Senior Islamic officials, such as Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, one of the most senior Islamic Shi’ite clerics, repeatedly have expressed their concern over the spread of Christianity especially among young Iranians, including the son of an Islamic cleric. Other officials are:

  • Ayatollah Alavi Boroujerdi, a “high profile Islamic seminary official,” recently bemoaned that “accurate reports indicate that the youth are becoming Christians in Qom and attending house churches”.
  • Ayatollah Wahid Khorasani said he had received reports about the exponential increase in popularity of Christianity amongst the youth in the Islamic city of Qom.
  • Another Ayatollah, based in Tabriz, said he had received reports that at one time, 600 residents of one of the cities in Khorasan province had converted to Christianity.

The “high rate” of conversion of Iranian youth to Christianity is in spite of the government’s two fold plan to stop the spread of Christianity:
(1) Propaganda and indoctrination:
The first front is the allocation of millions of dollars for Islamic propaganda across the country and to support Islamic organizations that promote Islam among the youth within and without Iran’s borders, especially in cities such as Mashhad and Qom. Last year, after Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi expressed his deepest concern over the popularity of Christianity in the suburbs of Mashhad, the city’s religious and political officials immediately sent a vast number of Islamic teachers and preachers to Mashhad’s suburbs to turn the youth away from Christianity.
(2) Suppression:
The second front is a crackdown campaign on newly converted Christians in order to plant fear in those who are interested in learning more about Christianity and possibly becoming Christians themselves. Young people who resist indoctrination and became Christian converts are arrested and harassed by the government’s law enforcement and intelligence ministry, and subjected to long term prison sentences and heavy bails for their temporary release. Churches, including house churches are disbanded. As examples, the government closed down the Central Assemblies of God (AOG) church and Janat Abad church in Tehran, and the AOG church in Ahwaz. Publication of anything related to Christianity or any material referring to Christianity is  restricted, and books about Christianity already in the market are confiscated.
But the government has failed on both fronts — a failure that is obvious as Iranian Islamic authorities continue to express their concern over the rapid growth of Christianity in the country.
Another indicator of the failure of the government’s anti-Christian campaign is the “significant” increase in the number of house churches in Mashbad. Mashbad is the Islamic capital of not just Iran, but the Shi’ite Muslim world. Other Iranian cities with “a record number” of house churches are Tehran and Karaj.
One of Tehran’s imams said in an interview, “today Christians present their gospel to our youth in the most appealing way. They gather in many neighbourhoods across the city, including Bani Hashem neighbourhood (in Tehran) where tens of homes have been turned into house churches which evangelize their neighbours”.
Pray for the Christian converts of Iran!

Threat to free speech: Unconstitutional S720/HR1697 will make it a felony to support anti-Israel boycott

The First Amendment to the United States Constitution, adopted in 1791, states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
The criminalization of political speech and activism against Israel has become one of the gravest threats to free speech in the West:

  • In France, activists have been arrested and prosecuted for wearing T-shirts advocating a boycott of Israel.
  • The U.K. has also enacted a series of measures designed to outlaw such activism.
  • In the U.S., state governors have implemented regulations barring businesses from participating in any boycotts of Israeli settlements in Palestine. On college campuses, punishment of pro-Palestinian students for expressing criticisms of Israel is so commonplace that the Center for Constitutional Rights refers to it as “the Palestine Exception” to free speech.

Now there are two companion bills in Congress which will criminalize free speech by making it a felony to support any boycott of Israel, in violation of the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment that members of Congress have sworn to protect.
The bills are S.720 and its companion in the House, H.R. 1697, with an identical name, the Israel Anti-Boycott Act.
Here’s the text of S 720:

Israel Anti-Boycott Act
This bill declares that Congress: (1) opposes the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution of March 24, 2016, which urges countries to pressure companies to divest from, or break contracts with, Israel; and (2) encourages full implementation of the United States-Israel Strategic Partnership Act of 2014 through enhanced, governmentwide, coordinated U.S.-Israel scientific and technological cooperation in civilian areas.
The bill amends the Export Administration Act of 1979 to declare that it shall be U.S. policy to oppose:

  • requests by foreign countries to impose restrictive practices or boycotts against other countries friendly to the United States or against U.S. persons; and
  • restrictive trade practices or boycotts fostered or imposed by an international governmental organization, or requests to impose such practices or boycotts, against Israel.

The bill prohibits U.S. persons engaged in interstate or foreign commerce from:

  • requesting the imposition of any boycott by a foreign country against a country which is friendly to the United States; or
  • supporting any boycott fostered or imposed by an international organization, or requesting imposition of any such boycott, against Israel.

The bill amends the Export-Import Bank Act of 1945 to include as a reason for the Export-Import Bank to deny credit applications for the export of goods and services between the United States and foreign countries, opposition to policies and actions that are politically motivated and are intended to penalize or otherwise limit commercial relations specifically with citizens or residents of Israel, entities organized under the laws of Israel, or the Government of Israel.

S 720’s companion bill, HR 1697, is much longer. It explains that:

“For a half century, Congress has combated anti-Israel boycotts and other discriminatory activity under the Export Administration Act of 1979.”

HR 1697 also specifies the punishment for violating the Israel Anti-Boycott Act: a minimum civil penalty of $250,000, and a maximum criminal penalty of $1 million and 20 years in prison:

Whoever knowingly violates or conspires to or attempts to violate any provision of section 8(a) [of the Export Administration act of 1979] or any regulation, order, or license issued thereunder shall be fined in accordance with section 206 of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (50 U.S.C. 1705).”

And what are those penalties? From 50 U.S.C. 1705:

“(b) Civil penalty

A civil penalty may be imposed on any person who commits an unlawful act described in subsection (a) in an amount not to exceed the greater of- (1) $250,000; or (2) an amount that is twice the amount of the transaction that is the basis of the violation with respect to which the penalty is imposed.

(c) Criminal penalty

A person who willfully commits, willfully attempts to commit, or willfully conspires to commit, or aids or abets in the commission of, an unlawful act described in subsection (a) shall, upon conviction, be fined not more than $1,000,000, or if a natural person, may be imprisoned for not more than 20 years, or both.”

Both bills have widespread bipartisan support:
(1) S 720 was introduced by Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD) and has 45 co-sponsors:

  • 31 Republicans: John Boozman (AR), Richard Burr (NC), Shelley Moore Capito (WV), Bill Cassidy (LA), Susan Collins (ME), John Cornyn (TX), Tom Cotton (AR), Mike Crapo (IA), Ted Cruz (TX), Deb Fischer (NE), Lindsey Graham (SC), Chuck Grassley (IA), Orrin Hatch (UT), Dean Heller (NV), John Hoeven (ND), Johnny Isakson (GA), James Lankford (OK), Jerry Moran (KS), David Perdue (GA), Rob Portman (OH), Pat Roberts (KS), Marco Rubio (FL), Ben Sasse (NE), Tim Scott (SC), Luther Strange (AL), Dan Sullivan (AR), John Thune (SD), Thom Tillis (NC), Roger Wicker (MS), Todd Young (IN).
  • 14 Democrats: Michael Bennet (CO), Richard Blementhal (CT), Maria Cantwell (WA), Christopher Coons (DE), Joe Donnelly (IN), Joni Ernst (IA), Kristen Gillibrand (NY), Margaret Wood Hassan (NH), Joe Manchin (WV), Claire McCaskill (MO), Robert Menendez (NJ), Bill Nelson (FL), Gary Peters (MI), Charles Schumer (NY), Ron Wyden (OR).

(2) HR1697 was introduced by Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL) and has 240 co-sponsors:

  • 177 Republicans
  • 63 Democrats

S 720 was referred to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs on March 23, 2017. Its companion bill, HR 1697, was referred to the House Financial Services Committee also on March 23, 2017.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency reports on July 20, 2017, that HR 1697/S 720 “was drafted with the assistance of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee” (AIPAC). Indeed, AIPAC’s 2017 lobbying agenda identifies passage of this bill as one of its top lobbying priorities for the year.
The two bills that will make it a felony if you support any boycott of Israel also have the support of the thoroughly-cucked Christians United for Israel.
Did you know that, according to a list compiled in 2012, there are 41 members of Congress (29 in the House; 12 in the Senate) who have dual US-Israeli citizenship, which means they have dual loyalties?

The above list is dated in that Barney Frank, Henry Waxman and Anthony Weiner are no longer representatives.
Sen. Benjamin Cardin (D-MD), 73, who introduced S720 and whose grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants, is on the above list. The family name was originally Kardonsky.
In 2015, Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL), 55, who introduced HR 1697, wrote a letter to the New York Times condemning the paper for a graphic on members of Congress opposed to Obama’s Iran nuclear agreement, which initially identified Jewish lawmakers with a bold yellow highlight. Roskam, who opposed the nuclear deal, called the graphic “anti-Semitic” and that it “feeds the canard of dual loyalty that legitimizes prejudice toward Jews worldwide.”
What is needed is an updated list. Alas, as L. Michael Hager — co-founder and former director general of the International Development Law Organization, Rome — discovered, it is extremely difficult to identify members of Congress who hold dual citizenship and to ascertain the second nationality of those members.
In October 2014, Hagen filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the Congressional Research Service (CRS) for the names of members of Congress with dual citizenship. In January 2015, he finally got a non-answer in a telephone call from a legal officer of the Library of Congress. After reminding Hagen that Congress and the CRS by extension are exempt from FOIA requests, the officer said CRS does not collect dual citizenship data.
Hagen writes:

“That’s bad news for those of us who believe that citizens should know if their representatives in Congress (and senior government officials and judges, for that matter) owe allegiance to any other nation….
Without transparency on dual citizenship, Americans remain in the dark, free to speculate on which representatives may have divided loyalties…. The lack of transparency is dangerous, for it erodes trust in government, creating credibility doubts where there should be none and allowing some conflicts to continue undetected, without question or debate.
Thus the first requirement is transparency. We need a government agency (presumably the CRS) or a non-governmental organization to disclose the names and non-U.S. national affiliations of Members of Congress and senior government officials and to track and report on this issue.
Secondly, we need more media attention to the subject of dual citizenship….
Beyond the threshold issue of transparency are equally important questions of whether a dual citizen elected to Congress or appointed to a senior USG position should be required to renounce his or her citizenship in the second nation. Even if American law continues to allow the government service of dual citizens, should it not require such persons at least to recuse themselves from participating in decisions or policy debates that relate to their second nationality?….
Conflicts of interest and apparent conflicts by public officials erode trust in government. Allowing dual citizenship in Congress (and in the Executive and Judicial Branches) to flourish under cover of non-disclosure puts our democracy at risk.
It’s time to bring this issue into open debate.”

To their credit, both the ACLU and MoveOn.org oppose S720/HR1697. In a letter urging senators to oppose the bill, the ACLU’s national political director Faiz Shakir wrote:

“We take no position for or against the effort to boycott Israel or any foreign country, for that matter. However, we do assert that the government cannot, consistent with the First Amendment, punish U.S. persons based solely on their expressed political beliefs.”

ISIS Fighters in Iraq Killed by Wild Boars

Wild Boar (Sus scrofa), male showing his teeth, Bavaria, Germany, Europe

Bacon got the bast*rds…

Feel good story.
From Newsweek: Three militants loyal to the Islamic State group (ISIS) have been killed by wild boars as they planned to ambush Iraqi tribesmen opposed to the group, according to a local anti-ISIS leader.
At least eight ISIS fighters had reportedly taken cover among dense reeds in Iraq’s al-Rashad region, about 55 miles southwest of Kirkuk, in preparation for a surprise attack on local anti-ISIS tribesman when a herd of wild boars attacked the jihadists on Sunday, killing three. The militants likely disturbed the notoriously short-tempered animals, said Sheikh Anwar al-Assi, a chief of the local Ubaid tribe and head of the group of local tribesmen who took up arms after ISIS took control of the nearby town of Hawija.
“It is likely their movement disturbed a herd of wild pigs, which inhabit the area as well as the nearby cornfields. The area is dense with reeds, which are good for hiding in,” Assi told The Times.
The event was corroborated by local Kurdish fighters who have joined Iran-backed Shiite Muslim militias in attempting to oust ISIS from nearby Hawija. The jihadists’ mutilated bodies were reportedly discovered by refugees fleeing the violence that has beset the war-torn nation. An alliance consisting of Iraqi military, majority Shiite Muslim militias (called Al-Hashd Al-Shaabi), U.S.-led coalition forces and Kurdish units (known as peshmerga) are seeking to drive ISIS out of Iraq, according to Brigadier Azad Jelal, the deputy head of the Kurdish intelligence service in Kirkuk.
“Three fighters from ISIL were near the Peshmerga checkpoint in al-Rashad. They met some feral boars and the boars killed the three fighters,” Jelal told The Telegraph, using an alternative acronym for ISIS.
“Some refugees saw the bodies on the edge of a farm when they were fleeing and they told us. A few days later ISIL started to kill pigs around the area,” he added.
