President Bolsonaro tells Brazilians to “poop every other day” to help save the environment

Um, yeah…that’s a big fat NO THANK YOU. It is NOT healthy to practice this recommendation. What a whack job this guy is.

From Daily Mail: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro suggested Friday that people ‘poop every other day’ as a way to save the environment, after he came under fire for a surge in deforestation of the Amazon since he came to power.

The far-right leader offered this idea in response to a journalist’s question as to whether it was possible to simultaneously spur economic growth, feed the world’s hungry and also preserve the environment.

‘It’s enough to eat a little less. You talk about environmental pollution. It’s enough to poop every other day. That will be better for the whole world,’ said Bolsonaro, who earlier this month sacked the head of a government agency that had reported a major increase in Amazon deforestation.

Bolsonaro has been criticised for a rapid acceleration in deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, which which covers vast swathes of Brazil and is considered vital to combatting global warming.

According to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE), which tracks clear-cutting of the rainforest, around 2,254 square kilometers (870 square miles) of the Amazon were cleared in July, an increase of 278 percent from a year ago.

The rapid rise in deforestation has triggered a global outcry and threatens to create problems for the recent free trade agreement between the South American trade bloc known as Mercosur. The pact includes Brazil and the European Union.

That followed a 90 percent increase in June compared to the year prior – figures that Bolsonaro has called ‘lies,’ and which prompted the sacking of INPE chief Ricardo Galvao on August 2.

The Amazon is vital to the exchange of oxygen for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere — a check on global warming.

But Environment Minister Ricardo Salles said the INPE data was published in a way that satisfied “sensationalist interpretations” and was aimed at getting “more donations from foreign NGOs”. Data from INPE, an institution of international repute, showed that overall deforestation has increased 40 percent in the last twelve months compared with the same period a year ago.

Bolsonaro, a combative politician frequently denounced for derogatory remarks about women and minority groups, said the rapid rise in populations around the world needed to be addressed.

“When you see how the world’s population is increasing by 70 million a year, you need a family planning policy,” said the former army officer, declining to use the term “birth control” for fear of an adverse media reaction.

“Don’t make me say that, otherwise (the daily) Folha de S. Paolo will run a headline saying I favor birth control,” he said.

“But you can see that more educated people have fewer children. I’m an exception to that rule, I have five,” he said.

President Bolsonaro: The exception to the rule…

Portland, OR to create “equitable mobility” task force to determine charges for driving on public roads

From Oregon Live: Portland City Council approved a plan Wednesday to study short-and-long-term strategies to charge people to use city streets, an effort intended to reduce congestion and curb carbon emissions as the region expects as many as 500,000 new residents by 2040.

The city will create a Pricing for Equitable Mobility task force to study and recommend potential road user fees – such as cordons, where drivers are charged to use certain streets in the city center or potentially more robust freeway tolls in the area. The task force will meet later this year and is expected to offer initial recommendations in summer 2020 and final recommendations in the spring of 2021.

Commissioner Chloe Eudaly, who oversees the transportation bureau, said the city must take bold steps to try and get people out of their cars. “We are going the wrong direction on transportation,” she said, adding that 42% of Portland’s carbon emissions come from transportation sources. Portland and Multnomah County have the goal of transitioning 100% to renewable energy sources by 2050.

What strategies are on the table are still up for debate, but likely options include cordon pricing, a potential fee for Uber and Lyft fares, more demand-based parking pricing, and potentially a local fee to charge drivers based on how many miles they drive.

The vote comes nearly two years after the council urged the city to create a comprehensive congestion pricing and demand strategy. The Legislature in 2017 also kickstarted a plan to study whether and how to charge drivers on Interstate 5 and 205 in the Portland area. The state has since applied for tolling approval from the federal government.

Advocates like Jillian Detweiler, executive director of the nonprofit transportation organization The Street Trust, said the city already knew what it must do – and that’s offer incentives to get people out of cars and onto bikes or transit.

“This can’t wait,” she said of the pricing plan, adding it took 20 months to get to the point of creating a task force. Other supporters urged the city to act sooner, saying growing traffic congestion poses a health risk to young people here.

The task force is expected to include diverse voices from transit-dependent groups and organizations representing communities of color, folks who, city officials say, already shoulder an undue burden in commuting times because they’ve been forced to relocate to farther flung neighborhoods.

Chris Warner, Portland’s transportation director, said the city was seeing an increase in carbon emissions in recent years, not a decrease. Those emissions rose 6.4% last year, Warner said, and are up 8% since 1990.

“We have to reduce the amount we drive alone,” he told the council. Portland hopes its alliance with Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Climate Challenge, of which it is one of 25 cities chosen, will help the city “augment and accelerate” it’s near-term climate reduction goals.

Portland has studied how other major cities — like London, Stockholm and Singapore — have started charging drivers to use city roads or drive into sections of the city.

Charging people to drive works, according to the city’s research. But it’s important to have a solid plan in place, access to transit and tailor the pricing strategy to the region.

Portland’s challenge is intensified because unlike many other larger cities, the bulk of commuters who drive alone into downtown and close-in neighborhoods for work in the Rose City aren’t wealthy. PBOT officials said 65% of peak car commuters in Portland are medium or low-income, so finding out how to charge users to drive is a tricky issue.

Noah Siegel, PBOT’s interim deputy director, said Portland couldn’t make whatever fees it settles on for drivers punitive. “It’s really about freeing people from sitting in traffic in their cars,” he told the council.

Do you rulers indeed speak justly?

Do you judge people with equity?

Psalm 58

1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly?
Do you judge people with equity?

2 No, in your heart you devise injustice,
and your hands mete out violence on the earth.

3 Even from birth the wicked go astray;
from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.

4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake,
like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,

5 that will not heed the tune of the charmer,
however skillful the enchanter may be.

6 Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;
Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!

7 Let them vanish like water that flows away;
when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.

8 May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,
like a stillborn child that never sees the sun.

9 Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns—
whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away. c

10 The righteous will be glad when they are avenged,
when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.

11 Then people will say,
“Surely the righteous still are rewarded;
surely there is a God who judges the earth.”

Gov. Jay “Let’s Defeat Climate Change” Inslee is all talk and no action; report shows Washington state greenhouse gas emissions got worse

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee is running for president. He touts himself as the “green governor” and wrote a book to “lay out the path to stop global warming and gain energy independence.”

From his presidential bid web site:

“Governor Jay Inslee knows that defeating climate change is the defining challenge of our time and that it must be the foremost priority for the next president. Devastating disasters and rising pollution have claimed lives, cost the economy billions and threatened the places Americans live, work and raise families.

Jay’s climate plan will meet the climate challenge head-on, while creating jobs building a clean energy future. That’s what he has done in Washington state, and it’s what he’s proposing for the nation.”

That’s NOT exactly what he has done in Washington state. Read on…

From King 5 News: The good news is that Washington’s economy is growing. With more people and business, however, the state has also seen an increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions despite predictions otherwise and policy aimed at reductions.

“We are doing the right things in the state. We have adopted some really aggressive policy to reduce carbon emissions. Those are beginning to take effect. We’re seeing that in the numbers. Our economy is growing by leaps and bounds, but our greenhouse gas emissions, they are just kind of ticking up,” said Andrew Wineke with the Washington Department of Ecology’s Air Quality Program.

Their most recent data is from 2016, which is still under review and could change. It shows about a 2% increase over 2015.

It’s still lower than 2008, which was followed by a decline for several years due to the recession. Around 2012, GHG emissions start to increase again, and have done so steadily at a rate of about 2-3% each year.

“There is more work to be done, but I think we should focus on the fact that we are doing some good things in the state. We are making progress. We just need to turn that corner,” Wineke said.

But if you ask Washington Policy Center Environmental Director Todd Myers, it looks more like hitting a wall. “If you are not getting data until 2-and-a-half years later, you don’t know what is working and what is not,” Myers said.

Though the state says it simply takes time to accurately compile data from multiple sources, Myers argues the system moves too slowly to make good predictions or good policy.

“They are making policies based on numbers that they claim will be true 15 years from now. It doesn’t make any sense for politicians to take the word of an agency that can’t even tell you what happened two-and-a-half years ago that is trying to predict 20 years in the future,” Myers said.

We are wasting huge amounts of money. That is not just a waste of taxpayer dollars. It is a waste of opportunity to do good for the environment. If people really believe that we are facing a climate crisis, we should make every dollar work. Instead, we are spending $20 to get one dollar worth of environmental benefit.

For Myers, the solution should be more investment in technology and open market solutions rather than regulations and taxes.

“We need to be encouraging more innovation, more people to find ways to reduce CO2 for very low cost. That is how we’re going to save the environment. That is how we are going to reduce CO2 the most rapidly,” Myers said.

In 2008, the state set targets to reduce emissions to levels seen in 1990 by 2020 and 25% below that by 2035. The most recent legislative session set a plan to be off coal by 2025, to be carbon neutral by 2030, and carbon free by 2040.

Al Gore, who predicted North Pole would be ice-free by 2016, was paid $320k by Australian govt to conduct ‘climate training’

Nearly 9 years ago, on December 14, 2009, at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, Al Gore predicted that the North Pole would be completely ice-free in 5 to 7 years, i.e., by 2014 to 2016 (2:14 mark):

“There is a 75% chance that the entire North Polar ice cap during . . . some of the summer months could be completely ice-free within the next five to seven years.”

Not only has the North Pole or Arctic ice cap not melted, the figure below, from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, shows that the Arctic sea ice extent for May 2019 was a massive 4.70 million square miles (12.16 million sq. km.). The magenta line shows the 1981 to 2010 average sea ice extent for the month of May, which, as you can see for yourself, shows that Arctic sea ice has not diminished since 1981.

But that hasn’t stopped the Australian government from paying Al Gore $320,000 of Australian taxpayers’ money to “lead” the recently-concluded 41st Climate Reality Leadership Corps training in Brisbane, Australia, June 5-7, 2019.

As described by the Climate Reality Project:

Climate Reality’s 41st training will explore the climate challenges and opportunities relevant to Queensland specifically and the Asia-Pacific region generally. Led by former US Vice President and Climate Reality Chairman Al Gore, the training will include appearances from elected officials, business leaders, communications experts and top scientists, who will give attendees the skills and knowledge to address the climate crisis and seek fair solutions with their communities. As part of the training, participants will also learn how to give the presentation made famous by [Al Gore’s] Oscar-winning film An Inconvenient Truth and seen in the 2017 follow-up film An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.

“From dangerous heat waves and storms to the threatened loss of crop yields and the Great Barrier Reef, few places in the world have seen the impacts of the climate crisis more than Australia and the Asia-Pacific,” said Al Gore. “However, in the face of these impacts, Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Island nations have a tremendous opportunity to champion solutions for a low-carbon, sustainable future, and have the tools needed to transition to a clean energy economy. These nations and their diverse coalitions fighting for a better future represent the hope that we can and will make the changes needed to solve the climate crisis.”

Joanne Nova, an Australian science writer and author of The Skeptic’s Handbook, points out the irony that while Al Gore was “leading” the Climate Reality Leadership Corps training:

Fittingly, The Gore effect strikes again. Snow fell in Queensland. (The last time it fell was 2015.)

Royal hypocrite: Prince Charles says it may be too late to save the natural world

This hypocrite has massive residences in England, Scotland and Wales. He flies on a 28-seat luxury jet.

He once sent his staff ahead of one of his visits with a truck carrying furniture to replace the perfectly appropriate fittings in the guest rooms (see above video).

When he speaks about “acceptable alternatives for people” you can be sure he’s referring to us commoners and not himself.

From Daily Mail: Prince Charles fears the natural world may be doomed as efforts to counter climate change are ‘coming too late’.

The lifelong environmental campaigner, 70, admitted the loss of biodiversity ‘terrifies me’ and said ‘the really difficult thing’ is presenting acceptable alternatives for people.

He said a key issue is the ‘untold damage’ done to the world’s water cycle – in a nod to the fact that ‘we seem to have forgotten that everything in nature is interconnected’.

But striking a more positive note, the Prince of Wales seemed to have a constructive conversation with US President Donald Trump during his state visit earlier this week.

The Prince and the President were said to have had a 90-minute ‘friendly’ discussion on climate change over tea at Clarence House, despite their conflicting views.

President Trump pulled the US out of the Paris Climate Agreement on June 1, 2017, and claimed climate change was a ‘Chinese hoax’ while on the campaign trail in 2016. The Prince ‘did most of the talking’ during their chat, according to the president.

But he said of the Duke of Cornwall: ‘What he really feels one way about is the future. He wants to make sure future generations have climate that is good climate as opposed to a disaster, and I agree’.

Mr. Trump, who has previously accused climate experts of having a ‘political agenda’, told ITV’s Good Morning Britain he ‘totally listened’ to the prince when the issue came up.

The Prince, a keen gardener, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of his gardens at his private estate in Highgrove, near Tetbury, Gloucestershire.

He has come under flak over the years for adopting an organic approach to horticulture but it has since become popular.

Bloomberg gives $500M to shut down every US coal plant by 2030

Man on a mission to destroy the US coal industry.

From Yahoo: Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City, will donate $500m to a new campaign to close every coal-fired power plant in the United States and halt the growth of natural gas, his foundation said on Thursday.

The new campaign, called Beyond Carbon, is designed to help eliminate coal by focusing on state and local governments. The effort will bypass Washington, where Mr. Bloomberg has said national action appears unlikely because of a divided Congress and a president who denies the established science of climate change.

We’re in a race against time with climate change, and yet there is virtually no hope of bold federal action on this issue for at least another two years,” Mr. Bloomberg said in a statement. “Mother Nature is not waiting on our political calendar, and neither can we.”

Donald Trump has made reviving what he has called “clean, beautiful coal” a cornerstone of his energy agenda.

A spokesperson for Mr. Bloomberg said most of the money would be spent over the next three years, although the time frame could be extended.

The donations will fund lobbying efforts by environmental groups in state legislatures, city councils and public utility commissions that aim to close coal plants and replace them with wind, solar and other renewable power. Part of the cash will also go towards efforts to elect local lawmakers who prioritize clean energy.

The campaign will be based on the need to avoid the most dangerous effects of climate change but will also emphasise the economic benefits of switching to clean energy.

More than 280 coal plants, about 40 per cent of the US coal fleet, have either closed or announced plans to close since 2010. This new campaign aims to shut down the remaining 241 plants in the country by 2030.

“Flygskam,” the new UK movement to shame people out of flying

Betcha this won’t stop ManBearPig, Harrison Ford, “environmental activist” Leo and every other Hollyweird hypocrites from flying via private jet.

From The Independent: Hear the word flygskam out of context, and you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for the next big Scandavian lifestyle craze, following in the snuggly, good-vibes footsteps of hygge and lykke.

But this latest trend is more about tackling climate change than getting cosy – here’s everything you need to know about the anti-flying movement that’s sweeping northern Europe.

What is flygskam?

This Swedish word literally translates as “flight shame”. It’s the name of an anti-flying movement that originated in Sweden last year, which encourages people to stop taking flights to lower carbon emissions.

The idea was originally championed by Olympic athlete Bjorn Ferry and gained momentum after teenage activist Greta Thunberg’s mother, the opera singer Malena Ernman, publicly announced she would stop flying, with various Swedish celebrities following suit. Thunberg herself travelled largely by train during her recent two-week tour of Europe.

Exact numbers are hard to estimate, but the Tagsemester Facebook page, set up by entrepreneur and environmentalist Susanna Elfors to give people tips and information on how to cut back on air travel in favour of rail travel, has around 80,000 active users.

“When Malena Ernman said, ‘No, I am not flying anymore,’ people thought, ‘Oh, if she can do that, I can also stop flying,’“ Elfors told The World.

“Some famous people after her also said, ‘I am not going to fly. And then people started to change their travel habits, and it became shameful to go by plane because it’s so devastating for the environment and for the climate.”

Is it having an impact?

In Sweden, definitely. There’s been a spike in rail travel over the last couple of years as the movement has picked up momentum.

Elfors said: “They have been putting in new train departures because the interest has increased here in Sweden, and also domestic flying has decreased. So, it’s really changing.”

The industry has taken notice too. At its recent annual meeting in Seoul, International Air Transport Association (IATA), the trade association for the world’s airlines, focused a lot on how to combat flygskam and anti-flying feeling.

”Unchallenged, this sentiment will grow and spread,“ said Alexandre de Juniac, head of the IATA, while addressing the event’s 150 or so CEOs.

Climate change activists Extinction Rebellion recently announced plans to disrupt flights to and from London Heathrow this summer by using drones. (Sounds rather illegal and dangerous to me.)

The Guardian changes their language regarding global warming

As the left has been doing for years, when not content with facts regarding the hysteria of global warming, change the language to scare the masses.

The Guardian (a very, very left-leaning British newspaper) announced last week that they are changing the language they use about the environment. Their intention is to “more accurately describe the environmental crises facing the world.”

From their announcement:

“Instead of “climate change” the preferred terms are “climate emergency, crisis or breakdown” and “global heating” is favoured over “global warming”, although the original terms are not banned.

“We want to ensure that we are being scientifically precise, while also communicating clearly with readers on this very important issue,” said the editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner. “The phrase ‘climate change’, for example, sounds rather passive and gentle when what scientists are talking about is a catastrophe for humanity.”

Other terms that have been updated, including the use of “wildlife” rather than “biodiversity”, “fish populations” instead of “fish stocks” and “climate science denier” rather than “climate sceptic”. In September, the BBC accepted it gets coverage of climate change “wrong too often” and told staff: “You do not need a ‘denier’ to balance the debate.”

Earlier in May, Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager who has inspired school strikes for climate around the globe, said: “It’s 2019. Can we all now call it what it is: climate breakdown, climate crisis, climate emergency, ecological breakdown, ecological crisis and ecological emergency?”
