Ick! Top 50 U.S. cities for bed bugs

According to Orkin, here are the top 50 U.S. cities where the pest control company performed the most residential and commercial bed-bug treatments from December 1, 2018 to November 30, 2019. The ± numbers in between brackets indicate how the particular city’s rank compares to a year ago, with a + number signifying a higher rank than a year ago, and a – number signifying a decline in rank from a year ago.

According to the 2018 “Bugs without Borders Survey” by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA), the top three places where pest professionals  find bed bugs are single-family homes (91%), apartments/condominiums (89%) and hotels/motels (68%). Hotels spend an average of $6,383 per bed bug incident.

Bed bugs, which are typically 4-5 mm in length and red to dark brown in color, can travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings. Normally nocturnal, bed bugs will come out of hiding to take blood meals from sleeping or quietly resting humans.

Bed bugs are known for rapid population growth. Females can deposit 1-5 eggs a day and may lay 200 to 500 eggs in their lifetime. Under normal room temperatures and with an adequate food supply, they can live for more than 300 days, often making treatment challenging.

Orkin entomologist Chelle Hartzer said: “While bed bugs have not been found to transmit any diseases to humans, they can be an elusive threat to households. They are excellent hitchhikers, and they reproduce quickly which make it nearly impossible to prevent bed bugs. Sanitation has nothing to do with where you’ll find them. The key to preventing a bed bug infestation is early detection. “When one or more bed bugs enter a space, we call it an introduction. During an introduction, bed bugs probably haven’t started reproducing yet, but they could soon. Vigilance is key to stopping bed bugs before infestation levels.”

Tell-tale signs of a bed bug introduction include small black spots indicating bed bug feces or nymph bed bugs in places such as mattress seams, bed frames and furniture. Their small size and ability to hide make them difficult to see during the day, so it’s important to look for the black, ink-like stains they can leave behind.

Here are proactive tips Orkin recommends for homeowners and travelers:

At Home Tips To Prevent Bed Bugs:

  • Inspect your home for signs of bed bugs regularly. Check the places where bed bugs hide during the day, including mattress tags and seams, and behind baseboards, headboards, electrical outlets and picture frames.
  • Decrease clutter around your home to make it easier to spot bed bugs on your own or during professional inspections.
  • Inspect your residence regularly—when you move-in, after a trip, when a service worker visits or after guests stay overnight.
  • Examine all secondhand furniture before bringing it inside your home. This is a common way for bed bugs to be introduced into homes.
  • Wash and dry your bed linens often, using the hottest temperature allowed for the fabric.

During travel, remember the acronym S.L.E.E.P. to inspect for bed bugs:

  • Survey the hotel room for signs of an infestation. Be on the lookout for tiny, ink-colored stains on mattress seams, in soft furniture and behind headboards.
  • Lift and look in bed bug hiding spots: the mattress, box spring and other furniture, as well as behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper.
  • Elevate luggage away from the bed and wall. The safest places are in the bathroom or on counters.
  • Examine your luggage carefully while repacking and once you return home from a trip. Always store luggage away from the bed.
  • Place all dryer-safe clothing from your luggage in the dryer for at least 15 minutes at the highest setting after you return home.

Despite more newly-enacted state gun control laws, Seattle’s gun violence is up

In May 2019 demorat Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bunch of new gun control laws claiming that they would “improve gun safety overall.”

Some of the laws included prohibiting firearms to persons under 21, temporarily seizing guns from people a judge deems a threat to themselves or others, and requiring certain secured firearm storage or trigger-locks.

The following month I did a blog post highlighting how ineffectively those new laws were preventing gun violence. See my post here.

On Friday, Seattle presented hard data that confirms the state’s new gun control laws are having ZERO effect on criminal behaviors in their city.

MyNorthwest.com reports that the Seattle Police Department (SPD) released its annual report on gun violence, and statistics show the number of shootings in 2019 is up from 2018. One of the causes is an increase in gang-related violence.

SPD records showed there were 332 shooting incidents in the city last year, an increase from 313 in 2018. There were also five more fatal shootings year over year.

At least the Department is solving 72% of the crimes, which is above the national average. Compare that to Chiraq’s dismal 12.2% clearance rate.

Washington aims to make it tougher to evict tenants; after all, a month of unpaid rent is just an “inconvenience” for a landlord

Demorat-run Seattle/King County has a terrible homeless problem that has been festering for years.

It’s been 15 years since King County developed their ten-year plan to end homelessness. As is typical with demorats, they never look to address the core issues of a problem. Rather, they seek out ways to control other individuals’ rights and, of course, get more taxpayer dollars.

Back in 2007 Metropolitan King County Council called for a study of the individuals with mental illness and chemical dependency involved in the justice, emergency services and homeless services systems. They found that the incidence of recent incarceration among homeless adults receiving publicly funded mental health treatment was four times the incidence of those who are not homeless.

So the bureaucrats are fully away that drug abuse and mental illness are part of the homelessness problem.

Also part of the problem? The criminal justice system and lack of accountability that the homeless criminals face. A quick search on our site for “repeat offender” will show plenty of examples of Seattle/King County’s efforts in “criminal justice reform.”

A King County Superior Court judge recently commented on why repeat offenders receive no punishment saying, “We’re just talking about property crime.”

So the bureaucrats are fully away that the criminal justice system does not work in favor of the law-abiding and taxpaying citizen.

Now bureaucrats have a new plan to address homelessness: Give renters more protections.

As reported by MyNorthwest.com: “The proposed standards would require landlords to give good or just cause, covering up to 18 cited issues by Tenants Union, including nonpayment of rent, noncompliance with lease terms, and chronically late rent payments, among other reasons. Landlords would not be able to evict for retaliatory or discriminatory reasons. Recent studies have indicated a correlation between evictions and growing rates of homelessness.

In their article I clicked on the “recent studies have indicated a correlation” to find out exactly who authored this study. Imagine my surprise when I found it to be the Seattle Women’s Commission and Housing Justice Project (a homelessness prevention program of the King County Bar Association). Not exactly non-partisan entities without any direct stake in the homeless matter.

You can read the full report at the MyNorthwest.com story.

Excerpts from their study:

From the Executive Summary: While a month of unpaid rent might be an inconvenience for a landlord, an eviction can mean life or death for a tenant. National research shows eviction is one of the leading causes of homelessness. Despite these serious societal consequences of systemic evictions, a deep analysis of eviction causes, process, and outcomes has never before been carried out in Seattle. Because the city is experiencing an unprecedented housing crisis, and we knew anecdotally that this crisis disproportionately impacts marginalized communities such as women, people of color, and people in poverty, the Seattle Women’s Commission (SWC) and the King County Housing Justice Project (HJP) decided to undertake research to fill this gap.”

Rebalance the Scales of Justice: Limit non-rent charges and the imposition of attorney’s fees, expand courthouse-based resources to include social services and financial assistance, and limit reporting of landlord-tenant debt unless reduced to judgment.”

Make it Possible to Pay Rent: Require landlords to offer payment plans, increase time periods to cure nonpayment of rent, and increase subsidies to tenants at risk of eviction.”

I was a landlord in King County until I sold my property in 2015. I can tell you that missing payment for one month of rent and covering other charges would have been a MAJOR inconvenience that would have caused me great stress. Not all landlords are flush with bundles of cash to cover their mortgages in case tenants can’t pay. And I know of ZERO mortgage companies that would accept a “payment plan.”

But Seattle/King County bureaucrats don’t think that way. That would require addressing core issues of those who they seek to keep dependent upon the government. And it wouldn’t allow them the opportunity to seek more taxpayer dollars in the name of “solving” a crisis.

London’s murder toll soars to its highest level in a decade, more than HALF stabbed to death in knife crime epidemic

Mayor Kahn’s solution to address the rise in violence? Raise taxes, of course.

From Daily Mail: The number of murders in London this year is at its highest level in more than a decade with 147 recorded – more than half of whom were stabbed.

September and June were the joint bloodiest months of the year in the capital with 17 homicides each, followed by July which had 16 and March and December with 15.

The 2019 rate broke last year’s total of 133 by early December – and is the highest level recorded since 2008 when Scotland Yard investigated 154 deaths. The total compiled by MailOnline this year includes murders and manslaughters recorded by the Met, British Transport Police and City of London Police.

The youngest murder victim was Riley Fauvrell, who died aged just five days after being delivered by an emergency C-section in Thornton Heath, South London. Riley’s mother Kelly Mary Fauvrelle, 26, was stabbed to death in June while pregnant with him. Her ex-partner Aaron McKenzie, 25, has since pleaded not guilty to murder.

The oldest victim was Dorothy Woolmer, 89, who was raped and murdered at home in Tottenham in August. Reece Dempster, 23, was charged but has not yet pleaded.

Some 17 of the victims were children – including 12 teenagers and five youngsters aged under two – and the mean average age of all 147 people killed was 32.

The year began with two murders in the first six hours of 2019 on New Years’s Day, with Tudor Simionov, 33, and Charlotte Huggins, 32, killed in Mayfair and Camberwell respectively. January was the second quietest month for murders with only eight – above only October, which saw six. The final month of the year saw 14 homicides.

Progressive utopia of New York City is losing residents at an alarming rate

At the end of 2019 Mayor Bill de Blasio claimed that New York City Is ‘safest big city in America.”

Demorats….delusional as always.

Excerpts from the NY Post report:

New York is in a State of Decline. Despite the nation’s longest economic expansion, the Empire State is actually losing population, an analysis of US Census data released Monday reveals.

The total state population as of mid-2019 was 19,453,561 — a drop of 76,790, or 0.4 percent, from the previous year, according to the study by the Empire Center for Public Policy.

New York was one of only 10 states to suffer a total population decline in 2018-19 — its fourth consecutive annual decrease after five years of growth, and the largest population drop of any state. Only West Virginia, Alaska and Illinois saw their populations fall at a faster percentage clip.

“You’d think with a strong economy, New York wouldn’t be losing population,” said the Empire Center’s E.J. McMahon, author of the report.

He surmised that the high cost of living may be catching up with the Big Apple region, historically a magnet for newcomers that offset population losses in economically struggling upstate.

Not anymore. New York’s population has been stagnant over the past decade, with a modest 75,459 increase in residents since 2010, a growth rate of just 0.4 percent, ranking 46th-lowest out of 50 states.

Stagnant growth has real consequences. The state will likely lose at least one and possibly two congressional seats — and political clout — after the next official decennial census count because of its failure to grow compared to other states.

By comparison, the total estimated US population of 328,239,523 was up about 1.6 million over the 2018 total. Since 2010, the national population has increased by 19,493,985, or 6.3 percent — nearly 16 times the New York rate.”

Liberal utopia of San Francisco: More than 400 restaurants closed this year

Would you want to eat in a SF restaurant with this view?

According to San Francisco Fact Sheet, there were 4,415 restaurants in the city in 2018.

In 2017, 350 restaurants closed due to city labor laws, real estate conditions and “public realm challenges,” among other reasons.

The restaurant business is tough. It’s tough when you have to try and run a business under progressive policies. And it has proven even tougher in 2019 in the liberal sh*thole of San Francisco.

NBC Bay Area reports that more than 400 restaurants in San Francisco shut their doors in 2019.

Fron the NBC Bay Area story: Said one restaurant owner, “The trend is more restaurants are closing than are opening and that’s historic. I’ve never seen that in my ten years in the restaurant business.”

The main reasons cited for restaurants closures?

The high cost of operating in San Francisco, high crime rates, dirty streets and long wait times for permits.

A SF Gate story notes other factors that have contributed to the restaurant closures: Labor costs and shortage, maintenance costs and high rent.

Many claimed that restaurants could survive the new minimum wage hike in San Francisco. In January 2018 Duna restaurant director of operations Jamison Wiggins said, “The way to keep the price down and be accessible to people, [and still] make delicious food, is to make sure that we keep that lean labor model.”

How’d that work out for Duna?

They are now closed.

Mayor Lightfoot mad at President Trump because he won’t acknowledge Chiraq shootings down 40% (depends upon your baseline stat)

Chiraq Mayor Lori Lightfoot can celebrate some sort of record?

This past Saturday Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot took issue with President Trump not recognizing some great accomplishment in her city. She tweeted this: “WATCH: Chicago shooting incidents are down sharply. But both Trump and largely the national media have been silent.”

Watch the MSNBC video here where they state that shootings are down 40% from three years ago.

The basis for their comparison claim is 2016 where Chiraq had 801 homicides and 4,380 shootings. That was a RECORD year of shootings/homicides that they have not seen in the past ten years.

Apparently the MSNBC and the good mayor are using this record-breaking year of shootings/homicides as the comparison to today’s rate to tout some improvement. But let’s take a closer look at the numbers, shall we?

Since 2014 Chiraq has averaged 2,975 shootings per year (I excluded the 2016 total as it was an anomaly). If the number of shootings were down 40%, there would have to be less than 1,785 shootings. As of Sunday morning, Chiraq had 2,736 shootings.

Since 2009 Chiraq has averaged 509 homicides per year (I excluded the 2016 total as it was an anomaly). As of Sunday morning, Chiraq had 508 homicides. So they basically have an average amount of homicides as they have every year since 2009.

So far this year in Chiraq:

2,736 shot
2,281 shot and wounded
10.6% homicide clearance rate

Clever trick for MSNBC and the good mayor to use a record-breaking year of shootings/homicides as the baseline for some great indicator that things are better in Chiraq.

I guess when you have no REAL accomplishment you have to spin the numbers so you can say #OrangeManBad.

See Chicago’s crime stats here and let me know if you really find anything you would brag about if you were the mayor of that crime-infested city.

Congrats demorat-run Baltimore, you did it! City breaks record for killings per capita in 2019

One day after I reported that Baltimore was nearing a record homicide rate, they achieved it!

WISHTV has the details:

“With just over 600,000 residents, the city hit a historically high homicide rate of about 57 per 100,000 people after recent relentless gunfire saw eight people shot — three fatally — in one day and nine others — one fatally — another day.

The new rate eclipses that of 1993, when the city had a record 353 killings but was much more populous before years of population exodus.

By contrast, New York City, with more than 8 million residents, had 306 homicides through Dec. 15.

The total is up from 309 in 2018 and matches the 342 killings tallied in 2017 and 2015, the year when the city’s homicide rate suddenly spiked.”

The Baltimore Sun has more grim details:

A working mother gunned down in front of her children at an East Side deli. A man who succumbed to the gunshot wounds he suffered two weeks ago. A baby believed to be shaken to death. A man shot to death inside a car.

The four killings this week push the 2019 body count to match the second-most on record: 342 homicides.

Worse yet, the homicide rate for 2019 has already set a grim record of 57 killings per 100,000 people.

The anti-Second Amendment folks’ responses to this madness in a strict gun-controlled city?
