Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg Urges European Countries to Censor Political Speech

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, meets China’s president Xi Jinping during negotiations to allow the social media giant to conduct business in the world’s most populous nation.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called for Europe to regulate social media on  issues such as political messages, privacy and data portability — or risk losing ground to “authoritarian” rules set down by countries such as China.

Zuckerberg met members of the European Union’s Executive Commission in Brussels on February  15 and  later gave an address at the Munich Security Conference in Germany in which he made his pitch for censoring free speech.

He said regulatory boundaries would give citizens “confidence” that tech giants were following a set of rules agreed by everyone, and that users “don’t want private companies taking decisions on how to balance social equities without a democratic process.”

“I believe our responsibility is to build the operational muscle to be able to enforce policies, fight interference and have good auditing and controls,” he said, but governments should provide “more guidance and regulation … on political advertising or what discourse should be allowed or on [drawing the line between] harmful expression and freedom.”

Zuckerberg said the process would “create trust and better regulation of the internet.” He also emphasised urgency, saying he was “very worried” that countries such as China were encoding “authoritarian values” in their regulation of the internet.

“To encode democratic values, open values, we’ve got to move forward  and move quickly before more authoritarian models get adopted in a lot of places first,” he said.

And yet, as Zuckerberg delivered his pitch to Europeans urging them to regulate free speech on the Internet before China forces the issue, he neglected to acknowledge that he already had caved in to the communist demands for censorship.

Niko Efstathiou writing for World Crunch, detailed Zuckerberg’s nine-year effort to get the communists to allow Facebook into China, and how the Facebook CEO finally caved into China’s demands for total censorship control.

In his January 17, 2018 article, Efstathiou writes:

“It was a handshake nine years in the making.

Amid a mass of red and blue banners — with Facebook’s mission “Making The World More Open And Connected” written in big white letters  — Mark Zuckerberg and Ren Xianliang, China’s deputy head of cyberspace administration, sealed a long-awaited agreement in front of a pulsating crowd of students at Tsinghua University. Having been summarily banned from China in 2009, Facebook was finally re-entering the Chinese market after authorities deemed Facebook’s content-suppression software to be in full compliance with the country’s censorship laws.

“We are very happy that Facebook and China are restoring the world’s faith in the digital space, by making sure that all online issues are related to reality,” Ren declared before the well-orchestrated event, an odd blend of news conference and university pep rally.

Zuckerberg said he was excited to see where 750 million Chinese users would take Facebook’s community. He ended with a salutation in Mandarin, earning a foot-stomping ovation.

With all the smiles at Tsinghua, it was easy to forget how resistant China had been to Facebook’s attempts to enter its booming online market. The ban had come swiftly after independence activists in the Xinjiang region used the social media platform for internal communications. In the years that followed, and despite numerous visits by Zuckerberg, the Beijing authorities remained unyielding in refusing Facebook’s entry past the so-called Great Firewall of China.

The key to reverse the situation first came in 2016 when Facebook began quietly developing a news-filtering software that had the potential to satisfy China’s censorship demands. That project initially provoked controversy, but Donald Trump’s election and the furor around fake news became just the smokescreen the social media giant needed to make its Chinese dream a reality.

Following Trump’s surprise victory, fake news quickly had become the phrase of the moment, following a falsehoods zeitgeist that prompted the Oxford Dictionary to select “post-truth” as its word of the year in 2016. Stories ranging from Pope Francis endorsing Trump for the presidency to Hillary Clinton selling weapons to ISIS sprung up on people’s news feeds in the weeks before the U.S. election.

Political leaders, newspaper editors and tech companies alike expressed concern about the risks that fabricated stories could pose for democracy. Clinton supporters blamed the phenomenon for her loss. Trump, meanwhile, assigned the fake news label to virtually any criticism of him that appeared in the media, making sure to hold on to the “k” in “fake” for extra theatrics.

Initially, Facebook had strongly resisted the idea that it should accept editorial responsibility for the content published on its platform; it was fearful of the costs and the extra regulation this could mean. But under intense public pressure — and a German bill that proposed up to a 500,000-euro fine per fake article — the company began to take steps to demonstrate it was acting against the truly and blatantly made-up stories. In January 2017, after a series of false reports targeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel surfaced on social media, the company released a fake news-filtering mechanism that allowed users to report articles as fake.

The system sent articles flagged by a sufficient number of users to Correctiv, a third-party fact-checking nonprofit staffed by investigative journalists who would work to determine the content’s validity. Stories found to be false were then marked as “disputed” and placed under a restriction by Facebook’s news feed algorithm, with a warning sent to users who chose to share them.

The U.S. version of the system arrived in May, with the fact checking delegated to major American news outlets as well as nonprofits. The Associated Press, ABC News, PolitiFact and Snopes signed on. The initiative earned early praise, with Facebook credited for a bold response to counter the post-truth age.

Chinese officials quickly began labeling articles critical of their rule “假新闻”: fake news.

But after that initial enthusiasm, the new system quickly took a different turn. A number of the news outlets signed on to fact-check began to lose interest: Up against the armies of trolls, the value of experienced reporters dedicating their time to debunking often obviously absurd pieces seemed questionable amid ever-shrinking newsroom budgets. At the same time, users and media commentators asked why Facebook wasn’t simply removing the posts automatically.

But the controversy took on an entirely different dimension when people realized the tool that would allow this already existed: in China.

The mechanism built for China, unlike the U.S. version, did away with the flaggers and fact-checkers and simply deleted posts based on keyword analysis. Facebook was not responsible for choosing which posts were removed  —  that was handed to a third-party company, which set the keywords.

China almost immediately saw that the frenzy over fake news in Western democracies was an opportunity to expand censorship over their country’s online activity. Chinese officials soon began labeling articles critical of their rule “假新闻”: fake news.

From propaganda to censorship

The blurring of debunking and censorship happened quickly. Facebook had already had a long history of generally obeying foreign governments’ requests to suppress access to content: Between July and December 2015, the company blocked as many as 55,000 pieces of content in about 20 countries. But the new content-suppression mechanism became a faster and far more effective tool for authoritarian governments. Whereas previously the authorities had to make requests, their flaggers and supporters could now do the job for them.

In April 2016, Turkey became the first country to use the content-suppression software to not just restrict circulation and flag stories but also to remove content altogether. Articles deemed “insulting to the president” or to “Turkish identity” often evaporated from Facebook. Zeynep Gülec, a self-exiled former reporter for the newspaper Hürriyet, published an open letter in which she said “fighting for media freedom in Turkey was always hard, but with Facebook’s new tool it has become impossible.”

China, for its part, accepted Facebook’s opening to its market after delegating the fact-checking responsibility to Zhenli, a newly created Chinese company based in Beijing linked to senior Communist officials and staffed by veterans of state-run news agencies.

Back in the U.S., the effects of Facebook’s content filtering were less monolithic but no less momentous. The rollout of the system met with a fierce public backlash and a joint letter from the editors-in-chief of The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and more than 50 other daily newspapers, giving Zuckerberg a lesson about both the U.S. First Amendment and the costs of playing ball with the Beijing regime.

A faster and far more effective tool for authoritarian governments.

Facebook, which had hired an editorial staff to help manage the filtering, became the focus of intense partisan criticism, particularly from Republicans who said the mechanism was “rigged.” President Trump, for his part, railed against the “pathetic fact-checkers” and “Mark Zuckercrook.” Democrats also attacked the mechanism after a series of embarrassing deletions of ironic posts and those examining troubling issues, such as gun violence and pedophilia. The civil liberties group ACLU filed several suits against the Palo Alto platform for limiting free speech, even when it is false.

Meanwhile, despite the 700 million potential users in China, the development of the past six months that matters most to Mark Zuckerberg is rooted in the U.S., where more and more of the most extreme users on both sides of the political spectrum have begun deleting their Facebook accounts, passing their time instead on two brand new alternative social media platforms that avoided any filtering. Their names, perhaps unsurprisingly, are Rightbook and Leftbook.

After spending untold $millions, ‘walnut sauce’ Tom Steyer quits 2020 presidential race

Tom Steyer, 62, is the billionaire Demonrat who spent $20 million on a national campaign to impeach President Trump, calling Trump “a clear and present danger who is mentally unstable and armed with nuclear weapons,” who had taken the U.S. “to the brink of nuclear war” and obstructed justice by firing former FBI Director James Comey, among other charges. (See “Billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer launches multi-million$ media campaign to impeach President Trump“)

Hey, Steyer, you do know that despite the Left and the media’s hyperventilating about how the Trump administration’s killing of Iranian terrorist general Qassem Soleimani would lead to a U.S. war against Iran and nothing less than the World War III, none of that happened?

And do you know that yesterday, the United States signed a historic peace deal with Afghanistan, that could see all American troops withdrawn from that hell hole by May 2021, and so end America’s longest war?

So much for Trump being “mentally stable” who had taken the U.S. “to the brink of nuclear war”. 🙄

Now, after spending yet more tens of $millions, Steyer is dropping out of the 2020 presidential race.

Mary Kay Linge reports for the New York Post that in the wake of a crushing loss in South Carolina’s primary Saturday, Tom Steyer is quitting, having racked up just over 11% of the vote with 66% of precincts reporting — thereby missing the 15 percent cutoff to claim any statewide delegates — despite the $23.6 million he poured into advertising in South Carolina alone.

Neither did Steyer win any delegates in three earlier Demonrat primaries — in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada.

Steyer said he would throw his support to whichever Demonrat wins the nomination because “every Democrat is better than Trump.”

Steyer also sanctimoniously promised to continue pushing for government programs to address climate change, never mind the fact that he made his $1.6 billion fortune from Farallon Capital, a hedge-fund firm that invested heavily in carbon-spewing coal-mining companies.

Hypocrite.

Olay teams up with pro-aborts to #MakeSpaceForWomen

Olay, owned by the progressive-run Procter & Gamble, has teamed up with several liberals to promote a Super Bowl ad that advances women in space. Biased journalist Katie Couric tweeted the following ad promotion:

“I’m so excited to be teaming up with @BusyPhilipps @TherealTaraji @Lilly @Astro_Nicole for @olayskin’s female-led #SuperBowl ad! Olay is making an impact by donating $1 to @girlswhocode for every tweet that uses #MakeSpaceForWomen! #ad”

So how do the women participating in this Olay ad “make space for women?”

By promoting the murder of innocent girls in the womb.

Actress Busy Philipps has long been a proponent of abortion. Last year she discussed how she was “genuinely really scared for women and girls all over this country” because of Georgia’s abortion bill. She had an abortion at 15 and “can not [sic] sit idly by while women’s rights are stripped away.”

Kind of hard to #MakeSpaceForWomen while stripping their right to life away from them in the womb.

Katie Couric (l) and Cecile Richards (r)

Back in 2017, long-time left-wing “journalist” Katie Couric fawned over then “badass” Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards. From Newsbusters:

Katie Couric unabashedly abandoned her “journalist” cover earlier this week to show solidarity for America’s largest abortion provider. On Wednesday, anchor Katie Couric interviewed “badass” Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards and author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on “How to Raise a Feminist” at the Women in the World Summit held in New York City. Much of the conversation focused on Planned Parenthood, now “under siege” and “assault” in the political world.”

The irony from the introduction at this summit on how to define a feminist? “A child given every opportunity to pursue his or her dreams regardless of gender norms.”

Kind of hard to #MakeSpaceForWomen to be given an opportunity to pursue her dreams if she’s murdered in the womb.

But that’s liberal logic for ‘ya: It’s not designed to make sense.

Bernie Sander’s effect on millennials: Doomsday, economic warfare and MASSIVE stupidity

I don’t know why I do this to myself. Sometimes I get on Twitter and peruse the tweets of Bernie Sanders supporters.

It’s hysterical at first, then dumbfounding and then you realize it’s really, really sad. It’s a reflection of our government indoctrination system and the cesspool that is social media.

It’s also a reflection, I think, of a couple other areas: 1) Demorat’s desire to be stuck in perpetual victimhood mode, 2) a lack of personal drive and responsibility for creating your own wealth and happiness, 3) a fanatical interest in being able to control how other people use their money and 4) when you combine the first three factors you have to come up with a fourth: envy.

So I stumbled upon the Twitter account the other night by a millennial who goes by the name of “electronic piss.”

Here’s her gem of a tweet: “2020 the year we make it completely socially unacceptable to stan/look up to people who are literally committing genocide by choosing not to redistribute their wealth.”

en

“Electronic piss” had retweeted a Time editor’s tweet with the following pictures and caption, “Nothing more needs to be said:”

Pro tip: Don’t go to the “electronic piss” Twitter timeline unless you are willing to read extremely sexual tweets and a serious amount of stupidity.

First of all, can you demorats pick a firm number of years for when we are to expire without a complete redistribution of everyone’s money? Is the world ending in 12 years or 20 before rich people cough up enough money for your scam? I’d like to mark the end date on my calendar, thanks.

Secondly, there’s a LOT of demorats on the list of the richest folk in the world. There’s even one white, demorat man running to be your president! Why aren’t you demanding those demorats give up all their monies in the name of your climate emergency cause?

Third: Since there’s a lot of Chinese people on that list of the evil rich who must redistribute their wealth to save the planet, when are you (and take that selective-mute Greta with you) going to go to Hong Kong to protest climate change?

If Bernie Sanders and his supporters truly believe in the “great planetary crisis we now face,” then how do they justify his owning three homes? By his “offsetting” carbon emissions?

Remember: Any answer given will be mental gymnastics because liberal logic isn’t designed to make sense.

The mask comes off: Chick-fil-A donates to anti-Christian, pro-abort, LGBT organizations

About two weeks ago on November 18, 2019, acceding to pressure from LGBTs, Chick-fil-A announced they will no-longer be making donations to Christian groups, such as The Fellowship of Christian Athletes and The Salvation Army.

See Dave’s post “Chick-fil-A Stabs Supporters Squarely in the Back

In explaining Chick-fil-A’s funding decisions, Rodney Bullard, VP of Corporate Responsibility and Executive Director of the Chick-fil-A Foundation said future donations would go to charities in support of education, the homeless and ending hunger because “We don’t want our intent and our work to be encumbered by someone else’s politics or cultural war. If something gets in the way of our mission, that is something that we are mindful of and cognizant of.”

But Salvation Army points out in a press release that it makes no sense for Chick-fil-A to divert funding from the Salvation Army (SA) to hunger, education and homeless organizations because the SA does all three on a massive scale, except the SA doesn’t espouse an LGBT ideology.

Now comes news that Chick-fil-A is sending a $2,500 donation to the anti-Christian and far-left Southern Poverty Law Center and with that, the transmorgrification of Chick-fil-A into an enemy of Christians and of the Right is complete.

Cal Thomas reports for LifeNews.com, Dec. 3, 2019, that conservatives and evangelical Christians had regarded Chick-fil-A as a model company because its founder, the late S. Truett Cathy, ordered that his restaurants be closed on Sundays to allow employees to attend church and spend time with their families. Chick-fil-A also donated to charities that supported the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman, which enraged the Left. LGBT activists declared a boycott of the restaurants which was countered by supporters of Chick-fil-A who showed up en masse to dine in the restaurant chain.

Without any noticeable new pressure, Chick-fil-A suddenly announced it would no longer be donating to Christian charities like The Salvation Army, an organization not known for political activism. Then the restaurant chain announced it is sending a $2,500 donation to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a left-wing organization that lists some Christian ministries as “hate groups,” including the pro-life Family Research Council (FRC).

FRC President Tony Perkins is calling on conservatives to seek a fast-food alternative because “Not only has Chick-fil-A abandoned donations to Christian groups, including the Salvation Army, it has donated to one of the most extreme anti-Christian groups in America” — the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

It turns out the SPLC isn’t the only left-wing organization to which Chick-fil-A donates.

A Nov. 26, 2019 report by Ryan Bromberger for LifeNews.com lists these other recipients of Chick-fil-A’s largesse:

  1. YWCA, the deeply political, radically pro-abortion and pro-LGBTQ organization that repeatedly partners with Planned Parenthood.
  2. The DC-based New Leadership Council that describes itself as a “hub of progressive millennial thought leadership” to “support one another along their individual path to a more progressive political and cultural landscape.”
  3. Chick-fil-A donated $50,000 to The Pace Center for Girls, a pro-abort education and advocacy group that featured feminist Gloria Steinem as their keynote speaker for their most recent girls’ Summit.
  4. In 2017, Chick-fil-A donated $38,700 to Usher’s New Look, R&B star Usher Raymond IV’s liberal non-profit that hosted a Disruptivator Summit on organizing the Left for pivotal social issues.
  5. Chick-fil-A gave $27,500 in 2017 and $25,000 in 2019 to Chris 180, a pro-LGBT behavioral health and child welfare service agency that received an award from the the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC) — the multi-million dollar LGBT powerhouse that recently pushed for the legalization of prostitution in DC.
  6. Chick-fil-A donates hundreds of thousands a year to Junior Achievement, which in 2016, joined a coalition (Georgia Prospers) of pro-LGBT businesses in a campaign (“Too Busy to Hate”) to politically oppose the religious liberty First Amendment Defense Act from passing in Georgia.

These groups, and many more funded by Chick-fil-A, are clearly political and liberal. So much for “not being encumbered by someone else’s politics or cultural war.”

Don’t kid yourself: The corporate liberals care nothing about protecting women

Ever since the #MeToo movement started, we’ve been told by democats that we must #BelieveWomen.

Yet when it comes to telling womens’ stories of abuse and harassment, the media and progressives do everything they can to bury the stories to protect their friends in high places.

Apparently it’s only acceptable to #BelieveWomen when they accuse republican men (even with scant-to-no proof).

NBC killed Ronan Farrow’s expose on Harvey Weinstein in their desire to protect predators.

ABC News spiked a story exposing the truth behind pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Obviously, the above two stories have a certain power couple connection – the Clintons. Funny how the two alphabets killed these stories at the time Hillary Clinton was running for president. Just a coincidence, I guess.

Now comes word that Nike is apparently victim-shaming a women runner who claims that Nike’s former trainer, Alberto Salazar , put her through physical and mental abuse.

The NY Post reports that athlete Mary Cain, while working with Salazar on Nike’s Oregon Project, the coach forced her to lose weight and ignored her acts of self-harm. Just 17 at the time, Cain describes scenes where Salazar would weigh her in front of her teammates and publicly shame her if she wasn’t hitting her weight.

Nike cut ties with Salazar this year after he was banned for 4 years from athletics for doping offenses.

Nike says they will launch an investigation and from their statement: “These are deeply troubling allegations which have not been raised by Mary or her parents before. Mary was seeking to rejoin the Oregon Project and Alberto’s team as recently as April of this year and had not raised these concerns as part of that process.”

The NY Post says that other women are backing Cain’s claims. From their report:

Multiple prominent runners, including New York City Marathon winner Shalane Flanagan, have spoken out in support of Cain. Olympic runner Kara Goucher backed up Cain’s allegations and criticized Nike’s handling of the situation on Twitter Friday.

“So [Nike] responds to [Cain],” Goucher wrote. “Takes the time to victim shame Mary, before saying they will investigate. I hope you come to me, because I have stories to match all of Mary’s claims and so much more. Don’t let this be more lip service, actually do something.

Read the whole NY Post story here.

As a result of this scandal, Nike CEO Mark Parker is stepping down to become executive chairman of the company on January 13, 2020. He endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in 2016.

Just another example of progressives’ and their double standards: They claim to care about women yet put politics, power and profits over the truth and well-being of women.

Hypocrites: November democratic presidential debate to be held in Georgia, home to fetal heartbeat bill they protested

Demorats are nothing if not consistent: Double standards are the only standards they have.

Earlier this year Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed the state’s heartbeat bill which bans abortion after a fetal heartbeat has been detected. The law goes into effect in 2020, unless successfully challenged.

Progressives went ballistic before this bill was signed into law because they love abortion.

Celebrities, corporations and politicians demanded their industry boycott Georgia. Just a few examples of those who called for/suggested a boycott:

B-list celebrities Alyssa Milano and George Takai along with the Writers Guild of America
Actresses/comedians Tiffany Haddish and Kristen Wiig
Disney and Netflix

Georgia House Democrats “condemned” Kemp’s signing of the bill: “The signing of this law ushers in a new era of nightmarish government intrusion into the reproductive rights and medical decision-making of all women in Georgia.:

Even the DNC expressed its concern and stated, “women’s lives are on the line in Georgia.”

They said, “Georgia’s abortion ban is only the latest example of how the Trump administration’s anti-women policies have emboldened legislators across the country to attack women’s access to health care,” the DNC wrote in a press release.

But what do you know…it’s now been announced that the fifth democratic presidential debate will be hosted by the recently opened Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.

I guess sticking to your principles is difficult when you can otherwise support a fellow democrat and his new business in a state that threatens women’s “reproductive rights.”
