This just in, from U.S.A. Today:
Reuters reports a 6.0 magnitude earthquake centered near Mineral, Va., rocked the mid-Atlantic states and was felt as far north at Manhattan and as far south as North Carolina.
NBC reports that the quake was centered nine miles from Mineral, Va., which is 100 miles south of Washington, D.C. Says Doug Kammerer, meteorlogist with the NBC affiliate in Washington, calls the tremor a “very big earthquake for our area.” The quake struck around 1:15 p.m. ET and lasted for about 30 to 45 seconds. There have been no reports of injuries or widespread damage.
The Associated Press reports that the Pentagon is being evacuated. An apparent earthquake rocks Washington, D.C. area. Fox news reports that several public buildings, including the Capitol, have been evacuated.
The quake could be felt in McLean, Va., headquarters of USA TODAY. It caused the building to sway. Some items could be heard falling from shelves. A number of employees went left the building.
I didn’t even know there are earthquake fault lines in the D.C. area. Here are 2 maps I just found:

  1. Felt it in my office in Raleigh NC, a couple of good shakes and then an extended period of smaller vibrations.

  2. This was on the ABC News site:
The epicenter of the quake was near Mineral, Va., 35 miles from Richmond, Va., and 85 miles from the nation’s capital. The quake was 3.7 miles deep. The epicenter is very close to two Dominion Power nuclear power plants.
3.7 depth is very shallow. I’m not surprised it was felt all the way north to New Hampshire.

  3. Wow I haven’t had the TV on since early this morning. I just turned on my computer, and lo and behold! This is stunning. Colorado had one on the New Mexico border yesterday that was a 5.0. We do have faults in places most people don’t realize. I USGS, AEIC all the time, but this still is a bit of a surprise, because some of these faults activity are subtle, and rarely felt.
    Take care all.

  4. Pretty strong shakes felt MD! No apparent damages, though.

  5. I am in Md. but I didn’t feel anything. I was out on a boat with my granddaughter. Our neighbors felt it shake the buildings. Is our Lord trying to tell us something?

  6. The Weather Channel says the earthquake was caused by an unknown faultline running under D.C. and through Virginia. It is now being called Obama’s Fault. Some think it was the Founding Fathers rolling over in their graves! Obama will surely say it’s really Bush’s Fault.

  7. trying to rid evil??
