Billy Ray Cyrus Regrets Sending Miley to Disney.

Paging Doctor Obvious: it seems sending a Christian child to work for a secular entertainment network might be a bad idea.

In the latest issue of GQ magazine, country musician Billy Ray Cyrus admits that Hannah Montana has not exactly been a dream come true. “I’ll tell you right now — the damn show destroyed my family. I should have been a better parent. I should have said, ‘Enough is enough — it’s getting dangerous and somebody’s going to get hurt.’ I should have, but I didn’t. Honestly, I didn’t know the ball was out of bounds until it was way up in the stands somewhere.”
Cyrus is in the middle of a divorce from his long-time love Tish. While he did not specifically blame Disney for the marriage trouble, it must certainly have played a role. The two were married for 18 years and had three children together.
For Miley, the series run of Hannah Montana ended in January, and now the young singer is focusing on a music career in more mainstream pop. At the tender age of 18, she has already managed to include herself in a lesbian controversy, a gay marriage fiasco, a semi-nude photo spread, a pole dancing routine, a lap dance story, and rumors of marijuana use.
While most Americans became worried about Miley after the pole dance show, those of us who watch Disney saw warning signs long before. All the way back in 2007, Disney used Hannah Montana to show suggestive content not entirely suitable for young children, especially boys:

Cyrus told GQ he was worried about Miley. Given the similar actions of Disney alumni Vanessa Hudgens, Adrienne Bailon, and Alyson Michalka, it has to make parents wonder what kind of atmosphere Disney makes for these kids.
At this point two things should be very obvious:
1)      Miley needs our sympathy and prayers
2)      No religious family should allow their child to work for Disney
The time has come for conservative parents to realize that Disney is neither family-friendly nor concerned about childhood development.

  1. Great piece!!!! 🙂

  2. Steve,
By no means do I think this is all Disney’s fault. It really baffled me that a big family man like Billy had let her go wild. He did an interview with Glenn Beck back in 2009 where I remember him basically saying Lindsey Lohan’s dad was a poor parent. A lot of people thought if any parent could keep their child humble it was him.
Not every child who works at Disney goes wild, but if you look at the ones promoted to be the centerpiece of a brand, the fame almost always affects them. It would be nice to say strong parents can slow them down, but I honestly do not know if you can set a child up for that much pressure and then do anything to control them.
Disney should know that by now. You’d think someone in that company would realize naive parents are unprepared. They should work with parents to do content the parents are comfortable with. In these situations, Billy gets no editorial control over how the shows are produced, and by the time he sees inappropriate content it’s too late to change her contract.
Miley’s music contract is with Hollywood Records, which conveniently happens to be owned by Disney. Ask anyone in the know on this, Disney had every intention to make an adult image for her.

  3. When the company was controlled by Walt Disney and his family, the
clean-cut image was an absolute requirement. Annette Funicello said Walt would not let her do the Frankie Avalon Beach Party movies in the 60s unless she promised not wear a two-piece swim suit. When Walt died and his brother Roy was forced out by the Hollywood sharks, Disney just went down the tubes in terms of decency.

  4. The almighty dollar is all that drives Disney now IMO.

  5. Sad to say, but Miley will probably wind up being the next Lindsay Lohan.

  6. Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan… now Miley Cyrus. (When Eminem starts crudley mentioning Hannah Montana is his music, something has to be up.)

  7. It’s even darker. In that same GQ interview, asked if he thinks his family is under attack by Satan, Billy Ray says, “no doubt. There’s no doubt about it.”
Those familiar with the CIA’s MKUltra program may find it noteworthy that Miley had an “alter” hiding in plain sight: “Hannah” is the same backwards as forwards.

    • Eowyn,
I didn’t want to get too much into Billy’s comments about spiritual attacks in my article because I wanted to kind of keep that more mainstream.
But yeah, the whole interview is heartbreaking to read. He didn’t even go to her 18th birthday party, and when he called her staff to check on her they said it was none of his business. The Disney people purposely drove a wedge between him and Miley so they could turn her into what they wanted.
I recommend everyone read the entire thing. There’s more than what I can fit into a blog post….

      • No one said evil had to manifest itself in a the form of a cackling guy in red union suit with a goatee and a pitchfork… politically-correct, amoral Disney does just as well. (Billy Ray just likes to stick to traditional references, that’s all. Evil’s still evil, just the metaphorical vehicle changes.)

  8. I seen the writing on the wall years ago and so hoped it would not happen.

  9. Let’s give them all some grace. Especially the parents. We can all try so hard yet free-will of the children is exercised. And, God is the one in charge of building our testimonies. Thankfully God didn’t give up on me nor did my family when my behavior was risky and bad. Years later I am a Christian mom parenting by the lead of the Holy Spirit and conventional wisdom. Some of my children are following God, but not all–YET. Pray for the Cyrus family and don’t judge them!
