Bernie Sanders defends ‘not all that bad’ Fidel Castro as he stands by old remarks praising Communist Cuba

From Daily Mail: Bernie Sanders has praised Fidel Castro’s ‘massive literacy program’, standing by comments he made praising the dictator’s rule of Cuba in the 1980s.

The Democratic frontrunner, 78, defended the Communist regime as ‘not all bad’ during a wide-ranging 60 Minutes interview which aired Sunday.

In it he told Anderson Cooper: ‘We’re very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it’s unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?’

Castro ruled Cuba for nearly half a century. A Cold War foe of the U.S., Castro’s government imprisoned dissidents and imposed one-party rule on the island nation. He died at the age of 90 in 2016.

Probed on the dissidents imprisoned in the country, Sanders replied: ‘That’s right. And we condemn that. Unlike Donald Trump, let’s be clear…I do not think that Kim Jong Un is a good friend. I don’t trade love letters with a murdering dictator. Vladimir Putin, not a great friend of mine.’

The self proclaimed Democratic socialist won a decisive victory Saturday in the Nevada caucuses, solidifying his frontrunner status in the race to choose the Democratic nominee who faces President Donald Trump in November’s election.

The 78-year-old senator from Vermont was leading with about 46 percent, followed by former vice president Joe Biden at 19 percent.

But even for Sanders the results are ‘shocking’, adding: ‘The ideas that seemed radical four years ago are now kind of mainstream.

‘When Donald Trump was a private businessman in New York, he got $800 million in tax breaks and subsidies to build luxury housing. That’s called corporate socialism. What democratic socialism is about is saying, ‘Let’s use the federal government to protect the interests of working families.’

He is correct that not everything Castro did was “bad”. Castro was even on “our” side initially. As David Ferrie, CIA contractor, put it, “At first The Beard was with us. Then we tried to whack him.” So Cuba became a client state of the Soviet Union, the best and the brightest bailed out, and Cuba settled into mutually shared poverty, the inevitable trajectory of all socialist states. Unfortunately Bernie’s simplistic and ahistoric rhetoric resonates with milllennials as they are incapable of logic and reason. And no he’s not a friend of Putin who committed the unpardonable sin of helping… Read more »

Trump’s developments created many jobs and generated lots of tax revenue. How many jobs has this commie created for “working families”? Apart from the maintenance and groundskeeping jobs at his three mansions that is

I’m STILL trying to understand the logic (?) behind hating Trump and ALL he’s done FOR America, and instead, siding with people who want to DESTROY all this BENEFIT America has reaped in the last 4 years IN SPITE OF all their efforts to PREVENT it. I could somewhat imagine it if this was NOT the Country they planned to live in-kids use this degree of thought all the time, before they grow up and see where it gets them in life. But if they intend to STAY here-aren’t they “pooping their bed” by ruining what took America over two Centuries to finally… Read more »

It’s not hard to figure out, you simply take that which is objectively and self-evidently true, like there are two sexes, male and female, or normal stable climate is normal and stable, and turn it inside out. And anyone who disagrees with that inverted reality is accused of hate speech and should be imprisoned in a gulag and re-educated. But maybe not executed outright, they’re still sorting out the details on that. So what’s not to like? Feel the Bern! And when you have any spare time, Resist! Making sense of liberal “logic” is not possible however. Attempting to do… Read more »

The end of the world’s supposed to come when right is wrong, and wrong is right. Pretty much the soup du jour in the establishment media.

That’s like saying, “Y’know, Mao Tse Tung wasn’t such a bad guy, he really did a great job getting rid of all those famished Chinese people.”
Nice to see Backstreet Bernie sees the silver lining in every Depends undergarment.

He must get his heart replacements from the same place Dick Cheney does.

Mao wasn’t such a bad guy for a murderous tyrant. Yeah he was responsible for the deaths of 55 million of his countrymen but nobody’s perfect. Cheney has a heart? I always hoped that his pacemaker would be shorted out by a coronal mass ejection or something.

…..because, ya’ know…..everyone must be required by their oppressors to be able to read the edicts, pronouncements, and otherwise vitally important propaganda emanating from “el jeffe.” Beyond that, not much advantage to literacy in Marxist dictatorship. You can’t “win” whether you can read or not. Bernie is a jealous admirer: would that he could.
