Professor claims SpongeBob SquarePants is racist

It would be quicker for progressives to make a list of everything that is not racist.

From Yahoo: Spongebob Squarepants has been accused of normalizing the colonization of indigenous lands by a professor at the University of Washington.

The children’s cartoon – which marked its 20th anniversary this year – was criticized in a report by Professor Holly M. Barker.

She wrote: “SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends play a role in normalizing the settler colonial takings of indigenous lands while erasing the ancestral Bikinian people from their nonfictional homeland.”

The character Spongebob is a friendly sea sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea among the other residents of a town called Bikini Bottom. Professor Barker believes that this is a reference to the real-life Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Natives of Bikini Atoll were relocated in 1946 so the US military could use the area for nuclear testing during the Cold War, which drew criticism from the media after it was revealed that the inhabitants were left without adequate food or water to prevent them from starvation.

Later nuclear tests left the islands of the atoll contaminated with enough radiation to affect food grown in the soil, which meant the islands’ inhabitants were unable to return, and those who did experienced issues such as stillbirths, miscarriages and genetic abnormalities.

This has given rise to fan theories that the cartoon inhabitants of Bikini Bottom owe their mutation to the testing.

Professor Barker believes that as an American character allowed to inhabit an area that natives had no choice but to leave, SpongeBob showed his privilege of “not caring about the detonation of nuclear bombs”.

She also points out that the cultural appropriation of Pacific culture in Spongebob Squarepants, with Hawaiian-style shirts, homes in the shapes of pineapples, tikis and Easter Island heads, and the sounds of a steel guitar perpetuating stereotypes of the region.

In the article, Professor Barker claims that because of these themes, children have “become acculturated to an ideology that includes the U.S. character SpongeBob residing on another people’s homeland.”

The article concludes with this: We should be uncomfortable with a hamburger-loving American community’s occupation of Bikini’s lagoon and the ways that it erodes every aspect of sovereignty.”

The article was published in the journal The Contemporary Pacific: A Journal of Island Affairs.

This is RICH: Libtard Sarah Silverman says the world needs more empathy

Amazing how having your show cancelled helps get you suddenly full of empathy.

On October 11 Silverman retweeted this tweet (by Rob Delaney) about President Trump: “rot in hell nazi c*nt.”

Yeah, Silverman’s a changed womyn for sure…

From Hollywood Reporter: Sarah Silverman is probably thinking about what this headline says.

At the New Yorker Festival on Saturday night, the comedian spoke with New Yorker staff writer Andrew Marantz about the dangers of clickbait culture and how headlines don’t always accurately reflect the nuance of the discussion.

“People are terrified, and to be honest, so am I right now,” Silverman said about speaking honestly, noting that she’s inadvertently hurt people in the past through her comments being digested into short soundbites.

That didn’t stop her from speaking honestly about the importance of change and empathy in the current social and political climate. Marantz opened the conversation by asking Silverman about her journey as a performer and the change in her comedy. While she started out performing an ignorant and arrogant character version of herself in her first special Jesus Is Magic, she’s since “had an identity crisis” as a comedian.

“Comedy dies in the second guessing of your audience,” Silverman said about her early trials to figure out how to perform what people wanted to see. “You have to be willing to bomb and start over. It’s easy to bomb when nobody knows who you are.”

Silverman and Marantz also spoke about her show I Love You, America, in which Silverman met with people who held different beliefs from her own and tried to have an open discussion. She explained that many an individual’s hatred stems initially from a desire to be a part of something with other people.

“It’s not about hate, but it’s about they found a community where they belong,” Silverman said of white supremacists. “Nobody has changed by being shamed or being judged.”

She also spoke about people like Christian Picciolini, who founded Free Radicals Project to prevent extremist movements after his own time in a white supremacist network, and Megan Phelps-Roper, the granddaughter of the Westboro Baptist Church founder who discovered a new path for herself through discussions with people on social media.

“People go towards love. This is what humans do,” the comedian said. “I’m a hypocrite in a thousand ways, but people are changed.”

Silverman went on to speak about her own change, as she hesitantly mentioned her decision to apologize for a segment on The Sarah Silverman Program when her character performed blackface as part of an episode about racism. Silverman said she harbored shame for many years and wanted to apologize for her “complicity in a liberal bubble racism.”

The comedian also discussed the dangers of cancel culture and internet shaming. “Can we hope for people to change? Can we be open to being changed?” Silverman asked.

“Cancel culture is a weird black and white thing that I think should take into account the nuance of things and the people’s intentions and their room for growth and if they have changed or if they have not — there’s a big difference,” she said.

Drugs, needles, feces, rats and STDs, oh my! STD cases hit 30-year high in California

From KTLA: Sexually transmitted diseases reached epidemic levels in California last year, with three STDs hitting their highest levels in the state in 30 years, according to a report released Tuesday.

For 2018, the California Department of Public Health saw an increased number of reported syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia cases. The number of cases also rose significantly from a decade ago.

Syphilis had the most dramatic spike over the 10-year period in terms of percentage; the 25,344 diagnoses represents a sharp rise of 265% from 2008, according to the report.

Chlamydia had the most cases last year with 232,181, up 56% over the past decade. And there were 79,397 cases of gonorrhea, 211% more than 10 years ago.

But what was particularly concerning for health officials was the number of congenital syphilis diagnoses which rose 14% from the previous year and increased for a sixth consecutive year. Since 2012, the number of infants diagnosed with the potentially lethal disease skyrocketed 900%.

There were 19 stillbirths or 3 neonatal deaths associated with congenital syphilis last year, according to the report. Thirty-one infants also had other symptoms or complications.

STD rates are rising all over California, in both men and women, the report found. But there are some disparities, with the highest number of cases reported among people between the ages of 15-24, African-Americans, and those who are gay, bisexual, or men who have sex with other men, according to the department.

“Underlying drivers of the increases of STDs relate to a complex web of social factors,” the report read. “Some people diagnosed with STD have experienced substance use, incarceration, the exchange of sex for money/housing/other resources, poverty, homelessness and disparities in access to care.”

California man who relied on oxygen pump died 12 minutes after PG&E cut power to prevent fires

From Daily Mail: A Northern California man dependent on oxygen died just 12 minutes after Pacific Gas and Electric shut down power to the area as part of an effort to prevent fires.

El Dorado County Fire Chief Lloyd Ogan said on Friday that a call was placed to the fire department from Pollock Pines after 3.30am on Wednesday. Crews arrived at the scene and found Robert Mardis Sr., 67, unresponsive and were unable to revive him, according to the Mountain Democrat.

Ogan said the man’s oxygen equipment required power, but could not say whether the shutdown was related to his death.

Mardis Sr.’s daughter, Marie Aldea, told FOX 40 that her father had several health issues and she believes the power cuts were involved in his death.

She said: ‘He had health issues. He had really bad COPD, which didn’t help, and he had congestive heart failure and other health issues, but the power going off and him not being able to get to his oxygen is, I believe, is what did it.’

Mardis Sr.’s oxygen tank reportedly lost power during PG&E’s power shutdown and he was unable to reach his battery-operated oxygen tank in time.

‘He’ll never see my kids get married, he’ll never see his grandchildren,’ Aldea said. ‘How do you fix that? You don’t. You can’t. Something got taken away from me that I can never get back, and I will miss my father forever.’

PG&E spokesman Jeff Smith said it has not been able to confirm the accuracy of the report. The power company told Fox 40: ‘We have no information on incident and have not been able to confirm the accuracy of the report. We refer you to local officials in El Dorado County.’

Governor Gavin Newson spoke out on Friday about the tragic death. ‘Losing a family member is horrific and to the extent this was the reason why, I hope that is investigated and I hope those responsible are held to account,’ he said.

The news of his death comes on the heels of the deaths of two others from the wildfires on Thursday: a man in his 50s who suffered cardiac arrest and Lois Arvickson, 89, after a fire swept through her mobile home park. It’s unclear whether the unnamed victim was pronounced dead at his home or in another location.

Winds gusted dangerously as forecast before calming in Northern California, where PG&E faced hostility and second-guessing over its widespread shutoffs.

Governor Gavin Newsom criticized PG&E and ordinary customers complained about the inconveniences caused by the unprecedented blackouts that began midweek.

PG&E, though, suggested it was already seeing the wisdom of its decision borne out as gusts topping 77mph raked the San Francisco Bay Area amid a bout of dry, windy weather.

‘We have found multiple cases of damage or hazards’ caused by heavy winds, including fallen branches that came in contact with overhead lines,’ said Sumeet Singh, a vice president for the utility company. ‘If they were energized, they could’ve ignited.’

Because of the dangerous weather in the forecast, PG&E cut power on Wednesday to an estimated two million people in an area. PG&E said on Friday that it has restored electricity to about 543,000 businesses and residences.

Another 195,000 customers had remained without power. Experts say a customer includes between two and three people. Areas without power includes Plumas, Yuba and Butte counties, where people are on their third day without electricity.

Butte County is where a fire started by PG&E equipment last year decimated the town of Paradise and killed 85 people.

The utility says power also remain out in of Kern County in the southern part of the state’s agricultural Central Valley, where strong winds prompted PG&E to cut power on Thursday.

The utility it was able to restore power after winds subsided and workers could inspect its power lines.

——————–

The coroner has determined that PG&E wasn’t at fault for this man’s death. That was quick…

Illegal alien accused of shooting transgender woman was previously deported

Illegal alien Ramirez-Cayente/Dallas County Sheriff’s photo

Ruh roh, demorats…you’ve got an undocumented immigrant who is a prohibited possessor versus a highly-protected special class – transgender womyn. Which one you going to protect in this case?

From Fox News: A Mexican citizen who allegedly shot a transgender Dallas woman last month was living in the United States illegally and is now a fugitive, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials said.

Domingo Ramirez-Cayente, 29, deported in 2010, was arrested Sept. 24 and charged with aggravated assault, The Dallas Morning News reported. He reportedly admitted to shooting Daniela Calderon, 35, six times in the chest, stomach and hip.

Calderon told the newspaper Ramirez-Cayente yelled homophobic and transphobic slurs during the attack.

Instead of being held in police custody, Ramirez-Cayente posted a $25,000 bond and hasn’t been seen since. It was unclear if he remains in the area. Dallas County prosecutors wanted him to be fitted with an ankle monitor, but the terms of his bond were set before they could intervene.

“The magistrate set the bond at $25,000 with no ELM (electronic leg monitor). As soon as the D.A.’s Office was made of aware of the low bond, we moved to amend the conditions of bond to include a monitoring device; unfortunately, the defendant had already fled,” Kimberlee Leach, a spokeswoman for the Dallas County District Attorney’s office, told the news outlet.

Back in March 2010, Ramirez-Cayente was taken into custody by ICE agents near Brackettville, Texas, after entering the U.S. illegally, the agency said.

“Ramirez-Cayente was processed as an expedited removal and removed to Mexico on March 27, 2010. ICE has not encountered Ramirez-Cavente since his 2010 removal,” said an agency spokesperson.

ICE did not immediately respond to Fox News for comment.

Anyone caught reentering the U.S. illegally can be charged with a felony. It was unclear if the Dallas Police Department flagged Ramirez-Cayente as an undocumented immigrant charged with a crime.

Another reason to not have Amazon technology in your home: Workers reportedly watching home security camera footage

Why anyone would put any of this “SMART” technology in their home is their business. You’ll never find it in mine.

Business Insider reports that Amazon workers in India and Romania are watching footage of Cloud Cam home security recordings in order to improve the AI technology. From their report:

Amazon reviews these video recordings to improve the performance of its Cloud Cam, helping it to better distinguish between an intruder and normal household activity. Amazon’s review team has in some cases assessed up to 150 video clips per day that are usually 20 to 30 seconds long, according to Bloomberg.

Amazon only reviews clips that are submitted by Cloud Cam owners for troubleshooting purposes, as well as those from employee testers, according to Bloomberg. However, two of the people Bloomberg spoke with said that footage submitted for review in rare cases included private interactions, such as recordings of sexual activity.

Customers can share a specific clip with Amazon to improve the device’s performance through the Cloud Cam’s feedback option, the company says. When a clip is shared, Amazon says it “may get annotated and used for supervised learning to improve the accuracy of Cloud Cam’s computer vision systems.

Amazon’s terms of service agreement for the Cloud Cam doesn’t explicitly say that the company’s workers may view footage recorded by the camera. It does, however, say that the customer grants Amazon permission to “review your Cloud Cam recordings to provide technical support.”

Hanoi Jane arrested at climate change protest she organized in DC

Wouldn’t bother me one bit if they kept this womyn in jail for some time.

From Yahoo: Jane Fonda was arrested in Washington, D.C., Friday while taking part in a protest about climate change.

The actress, 81, shared that she would be at the protest retweeting messages from the Fire Drill Fridays account, a Twitter account named for a series of demonstrations she organized to protest political inaction around climate change.

In an email to USA TODAY, Ira Arlook of Fire Drill Fridays confirmed that Fonda was arrested amid the inaugural demonstration Friday.

U.S. Capitol Police Communications Director Eva Malecki told USA TODAY a total of “16 individuals” were arrested for “unlawfully demonstrating on the East Front of the U.S. Capitol.”

When reached by USA TODAY, a representative for Fonda could not immediately comment.

According to local outlet WUSA’s Mike Valerio, Fonda planned to get arrested. “She tells us she’ll be here *every* Friday into 2020 — demonstrate, get arrested, repeat,” he tweeted with photos of him interviewing the actress.

On the Fire Drill Fridays website, Fonda said she’s moved to D.C. “to be closer to the epicenter of the fight for our climate.”

“Every Friday through January, I will be leading weekly demonstrations on Capitol Hill to demand that action by our political leaders be taken to address the climate emergency we are in,” she wrote. “We can’t afford to wait.”

Fonda has a history of controversial political activism, including her opposition to the Vietnam War. Fonda’s visit to North Vietnam in 1972 drew fierce backlash that persists today: She was dubbed “Hanoi Jane” and a traitor.

“I’m naive and I make mistakes,” Fonda said in the 2018 HBO documentary “Jane Fonda in Five Acts.” Of the infamous photo that showed her sitting on a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun, she says: “It was a betrayal. … I will go to my grave regretting that.”

This isn’t the first time Fonda has been arrested, either. According to her website, she was arrested for “drug smuggling” at the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport in 1970.

“I was handcuffed and put in the Cleveland Jail, which is when the mug shot was taken,” she writes. “I was released on bond and months later, after every pill had been tested in a lab (with taxpayers money!) The charges were dismissed and there were a few paragraphs hidden in the back of papers that they were vitamins, not drugs.”
