Armed Forces Day – Thank you!


Today we celebrate Armed Forces Day. A day of appreciation and recognition for the men and women who sacrifice so much for our freedoms.

The day was created in 1949 to honor Americans serving in the five U.S. military branches – the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard – following the consolidation of the military services in the Department of Defense. And don’t forget our National Guard and Reserve units!
The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated by parades, open houses, receptions and air shows. In 1962, President Kennedy established Armed Forces Day as an official holiday.
FOTM writers Tom and Terry both served in the military, as did Terry’s wife Wendy. Steve and Dave’s fathers served in the military too. My adopted soldier is currently serving in the sandbox.
There are many commenters here that serve/have served our country as well.

  2. Thanks to my dad and uncles (WWII), my brother in law (Korea), and my cousin (Vietnam), and to all those men and women I’ve never met who have sacrificed so much. You rock.
