Arizona Gets Tough On Illegal Immigration

UPDATE: Rasmussen Reports found that 70% of Arizona’s voters approve of the bill!
Reuters reports that this Monday, April 19, Arizona lawmakers passed a tough immigration bill requiring police in the state that borders Mexico to determine if people are in the United States illegally.
Lawmakers in the Arizona Senate voted 17 to 11 to approve the bill, widely regarded as the toughest measure yet taken by any U.S. state to curb illegal immigration. The state’s House of Representatives had approved the measure last week. Governor Jan Brewer, a Republican, has five days to veto the bill or sign it into law.
The law requires state and local police to determine the status of people if there is “reasonable suspicion” that they are illegal immigrants and to arrest people who are unable to provide documentation proving they are in the country legally. It also makes it a crime to transport someone who is an illegal immigrant and to hire day laborers off the street.
Opponents of the bill, some of whom held a vigil outside Governor Brewer’s home on Monday to urge her to veto the measure, say it is unconstitutional and would discriminate against Latinos. “You cannot tell if a person walking on a sidewalk is undocumented or not … (so) this is a mandate for racial profiling,” said Pablo Alvarado, director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network. Alvarado said his group would call on the federal government to intervene and was considering legal action to overturn the bill.

  1. About damned time!!!! I just wonder why John McCain has done a complete turnaround on this? It probably has something to do with his re-election campaign.

  2. Doc’s Wife,
McCain is a politician. Whatever wind blows up his A** is the way he votes. However, in deference to McCain, he appears to be an honest man and he never asks for pork. He does seem to be a man of conviction in many matters. On the other hand he is a politician and his voting record shows it.

  3. Don’t be fooled by this McRINO McCanus Jackassimuss wanna-be.
He just wants to retain his Senate seat so he can resume swapping spit and boxing tonsils with the jackasses residing across the aisle.
Just because he has always voted for 5% less socialism than his friend Teddy the Swimmer does not absolve him of his having helped push this country to the very edge of its demise.
So what if we go over the cliff one week later with the RINOs in control?
At the end of the week, we are still going over.
Hopefully this democrat in repub clothing will be decisively defeated and put out to pasture, like he should have been many years ago.
