There’s a question I’ve been meaning to ask for some time now.
But it has nothing to do with politics or other issues that are the usual subjects of FOTM posts. So I hope you can indulge me on this one, seeing how it’s Sunday and all. 😉
My question to the female readers of FOTM is a three-parter:
- Have you ever worn those towering (6″-7″) platform heels that are supposed to be the rage, worn by Hollywood actresses and starlets?
- And if you have, how do you walk in them?
- And if you have difficulty walking in them, why do you wear them?
I’m not being snide. I genuinely would like to know.
Here’s a sample:
What prompted me to finally ask the question are these pics of actress Melissa McCarthy taking a tumble while hosting Saturday Night Live the other night (April 6):

I wouldn’t even think of wearing shoes that high! Most I go is 2.5 inches.
Those heels are ridiculous! I never wore anything higher than 3 inches and that was rare. I recently retired and find one of the benefits is wearing flats and sneakers ( most of the time) while I work through my bucket list!
i’ve only got one pair of ‘high’ heels, the kind with the platform, but nothing like the ones shown on ms. mccarthy or in your pic above. i only wear them to extra-dressy special occasions, and they are easy-ish to walk in, but they sure make my feet hurt if i wear them too long! for all other events, like church, funerals, luncheons, and such, i wear sensible, low heels. i do not ascribe to much of what comes out of hollywood…those people are crazy out there! i don’t like the influence, neither in fashion nor politics, that the hollywood… Read more »
my poor flat feet won’t take anything higher than 2 1/2 inches. I have a 3 inch heels but i walk to the restaurant, sit down, walk back to the car and go home… end of story. :o)
Even when I was younger, I would not have subjected my feet to those.
The shoes on that woman look ridiculous. I don’t like that look at all; esp. on someone that age/size. Low heels here, “high” for me is 2 inches!!
No way would I wear these health hazards. We should ask the men how THEY feel about them. If they love their gal they’ll scream, “Take those monstrosities off your feet!”
Don’t wear them… wouldn’t know…
Having worked for a shoe company in the past; those shoes create havoc on the body (not including the fall). They are bad for your back, your lower legs and your feet. Aesthetically speaking I think a 2.5 to 3″ heel is much prettier and sexier; not to mention the fact that you don’t look like Frankenstein walking!
Thank you, Melinda, for your informed opinion as a professional in the shoe industry. You confirm my instinctive reaction to those platform heels: They are bad for women’s body and women can’t walk in them. How can they? Not only are the heels 5″ to 7″ high, the 1″ platform beneath her forefoot would make the shoes unyielding and unbending. So the only way to walk in them would be to stomp, instead of the normal heel-down toe-down heel-up gait. Actress McCarthy is lucky if all that happened to her was a tumble, and not an ankle sprain or worse.… Read more »
The theory on the shoes is they make your rear stick out and up. There is no good reason to wear something that will damage your feet, and ankles. My rule for shoes: must be able to run a block in them during an emergency. These shoes do not pass this test. Not ever worn anything like this in my life.
Also the truly tall person has no need of a shoe like this.
Hey Steph,
I like enjoy being (fake taller) too!! :o) Loved your post!!
Dear Stephanie,
At 5′ 4″ I’m considered short, too. But heels higher than 2″ were just not for me. Maybe it’s just the proportions of my body, plus I like taking quick strides. 😉
Steel-toed boots! I like your style. 🙂
I wore pumps as a young lady. However, I have never worn high heel shoes that high! I cannot imagine walking in them with confidence and poise! One must look terrified thinking always about their feet! Really, I don’t do feet!
I would get hurt.
A decently proportioned 5’1″ gal who wears steel-toed boots?
Adorable! 😀
Never have, don’t now and never will, for a couple different reasons. Wore a pair ONCE in the 6th grade for pics, I got to be the one they picked to go get each class for pics (hey! get out of class!), I fell off them and wrenched my ankle. No more getting classes and back into class I went. Man,,, Also being 5’10’ all the way up to 6′, tho I’ve shrunk an inch, I was already taller than everyone else and subject to severe bullying – and I’m gonna make myself taller??? From 7th thru 9th grade I… Read more »
My favorite shoes are none. I prefer being barefoot! I wear sandals and sneakers. When I must wear a dressy shoe, I wear flats or a minimum heel. Even when I was younger I preferred a 2 inch raised heel to the spikes. But I have never been a fashion follower, I’m much more of a plain Jane.
