40% of young Americans support government censorship of free speech

Freedom of speech is a fundamental tenet of the United States of America, understood by our Founding Fathers as an “unalienable right” given to all human beings (“endowed”) by God (“their Creator”). As stated in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

An alarming percentage of U.S. Millennials, however, as many as 4 out of 10, support government censorship, i.e., abridging the Constitutional right of freedom of speech of anyone who makes public statements “offensive” to “minorities”.
Millennials are those born between 1981 and 1997 who are 18 to 34 years old in 2015.
Jacob Poushter reports for PewResearchCenter, Nov. 20, 2015, that American Millennials are far more likely than older generations to say the government should be able to prevent people from saying offensive statements about minority groups, according to a new analysis of Pew Research Center survey data on free speech and media across the globe.
The poll comes at a time when America’s colleges and universities increasingly restrict free speech, in the name of racial and ethnic equality, “safe zones” and protecting delicate students from “micro-aggression”.
The survey asked people whether they believe that their fellow citizens should be able to make public statements that are offensive to minority groups, or whether the government should be able to prevent people from saying these things.
While Americans as a whole are less likely to favor government censorship of free speech than other countries, U.S. Millennials stood out as the group that most favors censorship. Here are the survey results for Americans:

  • Overall, 28% of Americans are pro-censorship; 67% support free speech.
  • 40% of Millennials are pro-censorship vs. 58% pro-free speech.
  • The elderly (ages 70-87) are most pro-free speech: 80% are for vs. 12% who favor censorship.
  • Women are more pro-censorship (33%) than men (23%).
  • Democrats are more pro-censorship (35%) than Independents (27%) or Republicans (18%).
  • Non-whites are more pro-censorship (38%) than white non-Hispanics (23%).
  • The less educated — those with only a high school education or less — are more pro-censorship (31%) than those with some college (29%) and those with a college degree or more (22%).

Here’s how Americans compare with Europeans. No wonder Europe, especially Germany, seems helpless before the tide of Muslim “refugee” invaders.

It appears young Americans are just waiting for a demagogue to mold and mobilize them into a new Hitlerjeugend (Hitler Youth), Communist Youth League, or Maoist Red Guards.

  1. Public indoctrination, I mean education, sure has succeeded! /sarc

  2. Oh, no!
Don’t put me in any situation where people talk of things that are contrary to what makes me feel “safe” under the government! I don’t want to hear things whereby I might have to use my brain to discern what is truth and what is a lie! (and I can live with the lies if it enables me to not get anxiety)

  3. This proves that American school children have become so brainwashed and dumbed-down over the past decades. Many are actually stupid, in the literal sense that their educational level is so pathetic.

  4. Welcome to Nazi Germany ca. 1935.

  5. Does anyone really wonder how we got from Elmo’s World and Reading Rainbow to this Pew Research poll? The indoctrination of the so-called ‘millenials’ has been all-pervasive and consuming. It’s a wonder the figure isn’t higher than 40%.

  6. Good article, until the last part.
There’s a huge difference between the Hitler Youth and 0bama’s paramilitary youth corps. Deutschland in the 1930s was a nation under threat of attack by numerous hostile armies, living in a land with little in the way of natural protective borders, and was doing what it needed to do to survive.
0bama’s children, on the other hand, grew up having everything handed to them and only want to take even more from the nation that gave them everything. So once again the comparisons of 0bama to Hitler are just ridiculous.
It really is interesting how little people understand how much of what they believe comes from a government that is actively promoting their ethnic replacement, their ultimate genocide. But for the record, gas chamber expert Fred Leuchter’s report did disprove the “Nazi gas chambers” story.
The often repeated lie that the Deutsch, under attack by 24 nations, wanted to kill people themselves but didn’t want anyone to know about it, even as nearly everyone else in the world had ganged up trying to kill them. So while these 24 nations had this one little country the size of Montana surrounded, and were bombing the dogsnot of of purely civilian populations, we’re supposed to believe that the really evil people were the ones feeding their prisoners daily, giving them medical care, and keeping them warm in the winter, all so they could wait until no one was looking (and they weren’t looking because they were out bombing the dogsnot out of places like Dresden or Cologne), sneak their prisoners into a shower room, and kill them with slow reacting bug spray. Even though there were vast stores of unused Sarin gas left over from WWI, which was specifically designed to kill people and would have actually been able to do the job.
Honestly. Does anyone here still believe this? Not only is it not supported by a single fact, it’s been conclusively disproven and being perfectly honest was a dumb story to begin with. And once the holyhoax story falls apart the whole “evil Nazi” narrative collapses quickly.
Considering how much has been disproven here on FOTM it’s surprising to see so many still buying into this very old “poor me” control drama. The victors of war write the history, never doubt that for a minute. So tell me, just who wrote the history of WWII?
*That* is who is teaching our children to have contempt for the values of what used to be Western Civilization.

    • It’s hard to imagine you’ve survived this long, being as clueless as you are.

    • I do not appreciate the hijacking of this post, which is not about Nazi Germany. Any comment like Triuwida’s will be deleted.

      • Thank you for the great post. I must say that I was flabbergasted by Triuwida’s comment! To the point that I first assumed that I was misunderstanding what had been written. The other thing that leaves me bewildered is . . . how can today’s young people possibly not equate freedom of speech, with being free, in a free land. I have little doubt that the founding fathers, and those whose blood was shed in the fight to bring about freedom for this land and establish America with her various states. All I can say is God protect us from people who think this way.
        God Bless America!

      • Very well Dr. Eowyn. It is your web site.
But you and your readers are far behind the curve on understanding what is going on in your country and world. And if you truly wish to be the blind leading the blind there is no point in my posting here any further.
        Good luck to you all.

        • Not only did you not apologize for hijacking my post, which is not about Nazi Germany, you go into a narcissistic rage, flinging insults at me, this blog, and our readers. That’s just so classy of you.

        • Triuwida: Speak for yourself! In point of fact, your post has little to do with understanding or reality. In the German elections of 1932, the Nazi party received 37 percent of the vote. They became part of a democratically elected coalition government, in which Hitler became chancellor. Only step by step did the Nazis dismantle democratic freedoms and turn the country into a complete dictatorship. The political majority could have united to stop Hitler from becoming a dictator. But they did not. Germany’s rise had nothing to do with its being surrounded on all sides by hostile powers, as you opine. It had everything to do with Adolf Hitler. Who says that can’t happen here?

        • As the saying goes,”Don’t let the door hit ya in the ass on your way out.”

    • “…so once again the comparisons of 0bama to Hitler are just ridiculous.” -Triuwida
You are in error, sir. One was a power-grabbing socialist who attacked religion while claiming to be religious. The other had a funny mustache.

  7. Wow! Without freedom of speech, we are no longer America!

    • Reasonable folks agree, even among the left:
‘If we don’t believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, then we don’t believe in it at all.’ -uberleftist Noam Chomsky, in a 1992 interview

  8. (Sarc.) Heil, Obama!
Re freedom of speech, if military service were compulsory for all,, and if no group were exempt from combat, there would be opposition to silencing of criticism of a war that greatly benefits a very few at a tremendous cost in blood and treasure and way of life of everyone else.

Is our Congress like that of imperial Rome?
