Suck it, Hollyweird: 2018 Oscar ratings down double digits; record all-time low

Officially down 20 percent from last year. And a record all-time low in viewership numbers.

From Deadline: It was an Oscar do-over last night for host Jimmy Kimmel, producers Mike De Luca and Jennifer Todd and Best Picture presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. Following last year’s Envelopegate, which led to Beatty and Dunaway inadvertently announcing a wrong Best Picture winner, the quartet’s second go-around went without a hitch.

The good news did not carry over to ratings for the 90th Academy Awards, which (correctly) crowned The Shape of Water as Best Picture. Last night’s ceremony, which aired live from 8 PM – 11:54 PM EST, drew a 18.9 Live+Same Day rating in the metered market households. That was off 16% from last year’s 22.4 rating, which was a nine-year low.The 18.9 appears to be an all-time low for the Oscars, well below the previous low ratings point, logged with the 2008 telecast (21.9), hosted by Jon Stewart, when No Country For Old Men won Best Picture.

That, despite the fast that The Shape of Water was the the highest-grossing Best Picture winner in five years.

Last year, the 22.4 metered market rating translated to 32.9 million viewers  — also a nine-year low — and a 9.1 rating among adults 18-49. We will update with viewership and demo numbers when they become available later today.

The best that Hollywood’s big night has done in the first round of ratings over the past decade-plus was back in 2005. That show, hosted by Chris Rock, got a 30.1 metered market households. Clint Eastwood’s Million Dollar Baby won Best Picture that year, and the broadcast went on to score 42.1 million viewers in the final number. With 12 Years a Slave winning Best Picture, the 2014 Oscars fronted by Ellen DeGeneres (27.9 metered market HH rating) drew the biggest overall audience of the 21st century, with 43.7 million tuning in.

  3. I love it -they are on the decline and very FAST, and the more they show old bag Meryl Streep, the MEDUSA of HOLLYWOOD, the less people will watch, all the weirdos can no longer bow down to her god, the devil personified Harvey Weinstein, MEDUSA is now the KILLARY of Hollywood!

  5. All the Oscars are good for these days is learning which movies you need to avoid. Most are nap fests or pieces of touchy feely nonsense made up by 4th graders for 2nd graders.

  6. I wonder how much of those ratings were because those at the awards, and those nominated, as well as those presenting, all had their TVs on taping it, so when they got home they could admire themselves and all the other leftards.

  7. I actually think we delude ourselves. Most of us have grown up with the idea that these shows chase ratings that translate to sponsors, which ultimately generate revenue for them.

I don’t think that is really the case any longer, if it ever was. This is really a hidden way of presenting and engineering culture. They would do this if the ratings were zero and the had no sponsors. In fact, Uncle Sugar would fund these if required.

It is the same for elections. If nobody voted I guarantee you would never hear of it from television. They would do their usual breathless narrative about the record turn out and how “close” the race was, etc..

We live in a reality that is very different from what we often discuss. That’s a good thing. Their goal is to stamp out any sense of goodness or unity. The only conformity they want is universal depravity. Deprave people are weak. It’s what makes them good cattle.

Hollyweeds are getting what they deserve. They want the people’s money for their movies and then don’t want to respect them. So, they can take their movies and put them where the sun don’t shine.

Hollywood has failed America and its people. They have gone to hell.

  9. The whole idea of these people all getting together and giving themselves awards is pretty disgusting. When it was revealed that Harvey Weinstein pretty much forced himself on every young actress he dealt with, I thought Hollywood had a wake up call. Haha

Then, I heard that Ryan Seacrest, who was the host of the red carpet arrival celebration for E television, was accused of abusing his assistant, and that some actresses were going to not talk to him because of it. So now, they go from everybody in Hollywood knowing about Weinstein and covering it up, to Ryan Seacrest having an accusation made against him, with no proof, and they black ball him. So they turn from hiding a pervert to guilty until proven innocent.

And then they have their little party to celebrate how good they are at their jobs, and nobody watches. Imagine that. I didn’t even hear if they talked about the president, I wonder if they did. Not really, I am sure that they shot at him as much as they could. Don’t they realize that their little act is growing stale, and that the president is actually gaining support, the more he wins at the things he does? And instead of trying to accomplish something, with the mid term elections coming up, the Democrats are content to ride the Muellar investigation into the Russians and the last election, which is pretty much pointless. I am not a Democrat, but I am not a Republican either. I am conservative, and that usually lines up with the Republicans, but anymore, it is getting harder to say that. But I have to say that the Democrats are in disarray right now, and need new leadership. Nancy Pelosi can raise money for her members, but that is all she can do. I am surprised that her constituents keep electing her to go back to the house. Chuck Shumer, from NY and a Senator, he is a jackass, so that doesn’t surprise me that they keep sending him back, they are a perfect fit.

  10. The Hillywood scandal sheets are more entertaining anyway.

    Fer instance:

Heather Locklear is going into rehab for the 7th! time to avoid jail:

She put up quite a fight with the local popo after getting into a scrap with her current (grifter) boyfriend. Kicked one in the jewels according to reports. Apparently she gets into fights with all her boyfriends. She’s a wild one

Oh yes, immediately following the fight, her boyfriend promptly went out and got a DUI.

She’s probably going to lose her gun(s) since this was domestic violence and gonad punting an officer. How many Hollywood types have guns? (ans. ALL) How many Hollywood types get bad behavior covered up by local LE (ans. LOTS)

Of course many hire security (former LE frequently) who can always carry, everywhere. Rules for thee and not for me.

    What a nutty town.
