Demorat-ordered study to expose illegal online gun sales backfires

Big heap flop.

From Fox News: A Democrat-backed study meant to expose illicit online gun sales instead seemed to show the opposite — with hardly any sellers taking the bait when undercover investigators tried to set up dozens of illegal firearm transactions.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., as well as Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, had commissioned the Government Accountability Office report to look into how online private dealers might be selling guns to people not allowed to have them.

Their efforts were based on a 2016 report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which claimed that “anonymity of the internet makes it an ideal means for prohibited individuals to obtain illegal firearms.”

“Congressional requesters asked that GAO access the extent to which ATF is enforcing existing laws and investigate whether online private sellers sell firearms to be people who are not allowed or eligible to possess a firearm,” the GAO report said.

Over the course of the two-and-a-half year investigation, agents tried to buy firearms illegally on the “Surface Web” and the “Dark Web,” generally by sharing their status as “prohibited individuals” or trying to buy across state lines.

But the GAO revealed that their 72 attempts outside of the dark web were all “unsuccessful.”

“Private sellers on Surface Web gun forums and in classified ads were unwilling to sell a firearm to our agents that self-identified as being prohibited from possessing a firearm,” the GAO reported, noting that in their “72 attempts … 56 sellers refused to complete a transaction once we revealed that either the shipping address was across state lines or that we were prohibited by law from owning firearms.” In the other cases, the investigators’ website was frozen or they encountered suspected scammers.

On the dark web, GAO agents successfully purchased two guns illegally, as the serial numbers on the weapons were “obliterated” and “shipped across state lines.” But in the attempt to purchase, the GAO agents “did not disclose any information indicating they were prohibited from possessing a firearm.”

Based on the findings of the study, the GAO said it is “not making recommendations in this report.”

Cummings, Warren and Schatz did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment on the GAO’s findings.

The National Rifle Association seized on the report to claim that online sales are in fact regulated, calling the study an “embarrassment” for the gun control lobby.

“GAO’s findings showed nothing so much as that private sellers advertising online are knowledgeable about the law, conscientious, and self-policing,” The National Rifle Association said, adding that online gun sales are “subject to the same federal laws that apply to any other commercial or private gun sales.”

The NRA described the study as an attempt to model the findings of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s 2015 report, titled “Point, Click, Fire: An investigation of illegal online gun sales,” which found that 62 percent of private sellers were willing to proceed with a sale, even if the prospective purchaser could not pass a background check.

All, including the N.R.A., ignoring the fact that according to our Constitution, i.e., the ‘second amendment’ and the “Bill of Attainder” clause, there can be no such thing as an “illegal gun sale”, or illegal possession of a firearm for that matter; that except to those, and for those, who are currently incarcerated.

    • Speaking of poses, even Cherokee princess Fauxcahontis is outdone in phoniness and rank hypocrisy by Brian Schatz posing as a Hawaiian in a Hawaiian shirt. He may have grown up there, but he was groomed as an Alinskyite commie from an early age. He went to the same grammar school as Barry Soetero and like Barry had a meteoric political trajectory following years working as a community organizer but otherwise absolutely zero qualifications for public office.

Not that long ago this communist apparatchik Schatz spoke at a Planned Parenthood of Hawaii dinner honoring Barry’s maternal grandmother, Mrs Dunham, for all her efforts exterminating unborn children. He may not be a member of Chabad Hawaii, I don’t know, but he knows enough to publicly announce his first allegiance is to International Jewry and socialism (as a euphemism for communism). Good work, Hawaii. You’re as suicidal as the fools who elected Fauxcahontis.

    • Maryaha . . . . Yes, I too looked at those who were leading this charge! No doubt one reason they don’t want the Second Amendment is that they are afraid that the people will go after them, not with pitchforks, but with with guns. These three fools are a sad indictment of the pitiful level of intellect on the part of so many of our Congressional leaders. Paying their salaries is no different that stuffing dollar bills down a rat hole.

This makes me wonder . . . how many other, no doubt, costly investigations have they mandated on behalf of the American people.

  4. We can legitimately add whole pages of others who should not be allowed to have guns, but they’re as entitled as any of us to have guns-that’s just how the Constitution rolls. By nature,if EVERYONE has guns, the Criminal element will be reduced and eventually eliminated, because Criminals will rarely engage in a “Fair Fight”. They fear situations where THEY don’t have the advantage. Eventually the overwhelming majority will each become individual “guardians of the Law”.
This is just one Man’s opinion. FWIW

    • truck . . . . God Bless you for bringing out the truth that cannot be denied . . . “By nature, if EVERYONE has guns, the Criminal element will be reduced and eventually eliminated, because Criminals will rarely engage in a “Fair Fight.” This is the dirty little secret that the gun grabbers just do not want to talk about.

Furthermore, I am left wondering, since the statistics that are attributable to Mayor Michael (Gun Grabber) Bloomberg, which cited that 62% of private gun sellers would go ahead and complete a sale, even though a background check had not been completed. Yet this latest study completed by the GAO did not come near to replicating the same statistic . . . this makes me wonder if Bloomberg’s study was not a put-up job of distortion. I think he would have done and said anything in order to push the anti-gun agenda forward.

      • Auntie-Bloomberg’s subtlety is rivaled only by a volcanic eruption-ANYONE can see the smoke, debris and destruction it brings, but only the most gullible will believe it’s “just a natural event-nothing to see here…”
Bloomberg’s form-fitted statistics have ALL been disproved time and time again by the people who REALLY know what’s going on-the DOJ,NRA and about 95% of the Police Officers in America, and the Gun-Grabbers have a LONG history of making up statistics as they go,figuring Gun Owners will forget THOSE numbers long before they have time to look them up and find they DON’T EXIST..

    • I totally agree. It’s like free speech. The cure for speech we don’t like is more speech. “Shall not be infringed” means just that. There are no “butt’s” or an “unless” attached.

In fact, everyone has the “GOD-GIVEN” right to defend themselves. Personally, I don’t believe that government gives us permission. If I want a howitzer, I should be able to have one. If they don’t like that, I’ll note it.

Any of us who know anything about weapons know full well that this has nothing to do with “crime”. These parasites want to inflict their wrath on us unopposed.

I never agreed to let someone else “protect” me. If I need help I’ll ask for it. Otherwise, butt out. These leftists really do think they’re smarter than all of us. They don’t care if they infringe on our rights. They do care if we can defend ourselves and that makes it harder for them to enslave us.

      • lophatt . . . . Bravo! I really love the following sentence, . . . “I never agreed to let someone else ‘protect’ me.” That sentence in itself pretty much sums up what the Constitution affords each and every citizen. What negates the truth in the Constitution is that we have leaders who will not obey the Constitution. For this action, they should be indicted.

  5. This is the latest trend. Just lie. They just make up stuff that they think emotionally supports their assignment. It’s like the Trump, Trump, Trump, Russia, Russia, Trump, Trump on TV. It is pure lies and mind control.

Does anybody else besides me wonder at the expenditures in salaries and air time to do this? It is constant and unremitting, 24/7 – 365.

  6. lophatt . . . Bravo! Very true words. I have little doubt that in one way or another the American citizen’s pay big bucks relative to “expenditures in salaries and air time to do this. . . “

  7. OOPS! Only the Obama DOJ and the Obama Admin were successful in illegally moving guns—online or otherwise—–betw the USA and the Mexican drug cartels…..for which an American Border Guard paid for by his LIFE—at the hands of one of those guns…..but….I digress……

  8. If this is the best they can do for America why has no one recognized them for the incompetents they really are? They talk too much and accomplish very little. Barnum and Bailey politics at its finest!

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., Sens. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii made a valiant effort but it didn’t turn out quite the way they wanted. I am sure there will be more attempts to validate their talking points but this one wouldn’t do it! Nice!
