From NY Post: A former chairman of the Democratic National Committee said “superstar” Joe Biden would “definitely” win if he ran against President Trump in the 2020 election.
“There’s only one person I can say who will definitely win the election and has a superstar appeal in almost every state in the union, and that’s Vice President Biden,” Ed Rendell told John Catsimatidis on his 970 AM radio show in an interview that aired Sunday. “Of course, people say he’s too old. But he’s only a year and a half older than President Trump, and he’s in infinitely better shape. I don’t think age would be a factor in a Biden-Trump election.”
Biden, 75, has said he thought he would have beaten Hillary Clinton if he had run in the 2016 Democratic primary election still hasn’t closed the door on opposing Trump, who is 71. Biden, a former senator from Delaware, said he was prepared to launch a campaign in 2016 until his son Beau died of brain cancer.
Rendell, the former governor of Pennsylvania, said Democrats could run against the unpopular programs backed by Trump and the GOP-controlled Congress, but warned against veering too far to the left.
“What I think the nation is looking for … is not left or right necessarily, but actual real answers to the problems and challenges that face us,” he said. “If I were still party chairman, I’d be on the air right now telling people how badly the Republican tax plan screws the middle class. How 83 percent of the benefits go to the top one percent.”
He added that the Democrats should come up with an alternate tax plan that benefits the middle class.Rendell also predicted that GOP plans for infrastructure spending and immigration reform, top legislative priorities for 2018, would end in disaster.
Republicans won’t “get anything done in infrastructure … I don’t believe they have anything close to a consensus to get anything meaningful done on immigration,” he said. “I think they’re going to have a record of having done nothing except this tax bill, which is extraordinarily unpopular. … It’s a mess.”
