Sunday Devotional: How to prepare for His Coming

1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

Brothers and sisters:
Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing.
In all circumstances give thanks,
for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.
Do not quench the Spirit.
Do not despise prophetic utterances.
Test everything; retain what is good.
Refrain from every kind of evil.

May the God of peace make you perfectly holy
and may you entirely, spirit, soul, and body,
be preserved blameless for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
The one who calls you is faithful,
and he will also accomplish it.

Today is the third Sunday of Advent.

The word “advent” means “coming”.

Advent is a season observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. But Advent also has another meaning in Christian theology: the Second Coming of Christ.

For both meanings, we should prepare ourselves by making our “entirety” holy, in “spirit, soul and body”. How? —

  • Pray, “without ceasing”.
  • Be grateful: “In all circumstances give thanks”.
  • Discern good from evil: “Test everything”.
  • Choose good over evil: “retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of evil”.
  • Be joyful: “Rejoice always”.

May the peace and love and joy of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,

~Eowyn

  5. Beautiful spiritual message, as true for those who live in this day and age, as it was for the early Christians.
