Everything is sexist: Eating meat promotes toxic masculinity

From Fox News: An academic journal has published an article by a Ph.D. candidate at Pennsylvania State University that argues eating meat maintains a society where “hegemonic masculinity” is the norm.

Anne DeLessio-Parson, whose article was published in Gender, Place and Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography, based her research on Argentina’s “meat-centric” culture.

“I contend that in such a context, we cannot separate the ways people ‘do vegetarianism’ from how they ‘do gender,’” Anne DeLessio-Parson wrote. “Doing vegetarianism in interactions drives social change, contributing to the de-linking of meat from gender hegemony and revealing the resisting and reworking of gender in food spaces.”

DeLessio-Parson theorizes that being a vegetarian in the South American nation is a political act that contributes to the destabilization of the gender binary, or the view that there are only two sexes, masculine and feminine.

“[V]egetarians defy attempts to hold them accountable to gendered social expectations,” she wrote. “Women, for example, assert authority over their diets; men embody rejection of the meat-masculinity nexus by adopting a worldview that also rejects sexism and racism.”

The Penn State student became interested in the topic after spending five years as a vegetarian in Argentina, where she worked as a community organizer and teacher. In an interview with Campus Reform, DeLessio-Parson said it was during her time in the country that she came to believe that vegetarianism was both a lifestyle choice and feminist act.

“Women, one of the ways they push back against patriarchy, they say, ‘This is my body. You don’t get to tell me what comes in and out,’” she told Campus Reform.

After being picked up by numerous far-right media outlets, DeLessio-Parson’s study was lambasted by many social media users…of both genders.

“I guess im [sic] going to be reinforcing gender stereotypes at lunch today with my ground turkey…. and just when I thought I’d get to escape politics at lunch!” Whitney Joseph of Connecticut tweeted on Monday.

“My daughters the carnivores are going to be really bummed that I don’t want to further hegemonic masculinity so they have to eat salad while I finish my steak,” tweeted Frank Miller of Wisconsin.

After a year of the improved training table, all Pennsylvania State University athletes will be called The Soy Boys if the feminists’ diet for them is followed.

  5. What a joke…

To study the link between masculinity and meat, DeLessio-Parson interviewed 23 vegetarians who live in Argentina to probe how they deal with their country’s “meat-centric” culture, finding that being vegetarian itself is a political act. […]

  9. There’s SOME foods I like,in SPITE of what the “educated non-thinkers” say,and other foods that,even though they’re healthier,and I KNOW that,I won’t even eat at GUNPOINT. In short-I eat what I LIKE,and skip foods I DON’T LIKE. (As I’m aging,I’m getting more stubborn…..What’s up with THAT??)

    • truckjunkie . . . You ask the question . . . “What’s u with THAT??” The answer is, ” You put in your time, and now you get to do what you want to do. If you are old enough, you can just let everyone out there think you are a crazy old coot, that is unmanageable. That’s kind of where I’m at, and several of my friends indicate they are also to the point where other people are not going to play a tune that requires them to dance to.

The craziest thing I ever heard was one of my acquaintances had a relative is a nursing home. The old gentleman was 97 years old. He wanted to have eggs and bacon for breakfast every day. The people who run the place refused to allow him to have more than one egg a week, and NO bacon, because eating more than that would shorten his life! Anyone who has reached the age of 97 ought to be able to have whatever they want for breakfast. When I heard this story, the first thing I thought was this is a real example of “elder abuse.”

I can only say after reading this article, that woman is just plum nuts!

  11. Generally speaking, a Ph.D. candidate in any of the social “sciences” equals someone who is unhinged from reality.

  12. They found a way to combine their “vegetarian”/vegan (After all vegetarianism is just the “initiate” phase for the vegan cult, no?) cult with their sexism cult… what a vile hybrid monster… hopefully it will not last.
