Kate Steinle’s last words: “Help me, dad”

Kate Steinle: Murdered by an illegal alien in sanctuary San Francisco

A child’s last words, should they perish before their parents, should be “I love you.” This is so heartbreaking.

From Fox News: The second day in the trial of the homeless illegal immigrant from Mexico charged with killing Kate Steinle featured testimony from a witness to the slaying.

Michelle Lo took the stand on Tuesday to tell the jury, with the help of an interpreter, what she saw the night of July 1, 2015 when Steinle was shot.

Lo said she was on vacation in San Francisco with her family at the time of the shooting. She remembered a man dressed in black who “looked like a homeless person” and was spinning around in a chair “grinning and laughing” who made her uncomfortable.

She said she and her family continued along the pier before hearing a “very sharp scream” and seeing a woman on the ground. And she said she saw the same man from earlier walking away.

Lo had taken pictures on the pier before the shooting occurred and both Steinle and the defendant, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, appeared in them. One showed Zarate sitting in one of the aformentioned chairs and another showed Steinle walking near him.

During the defense’s cross examination, attorney Matt Gonzalez questioned Lo based off her initial police interview at the time of the shooting, during which she said she didn’t really notice Zarate.

After Lo repeatedly said she didn’t remember certain details, Gonzalez read portions of her interview transcript. She confirmed to the jury that at the time of the interview she said, “I didn’t pay too much attention to him” and “looked because [I] was passing by but not intentional.”

She also confirmed that Zarate’s presence in her pictures was coincidental.

Following Lo, the jury heard from two other witnesses, Maria Moreno and Aryn Carpenter, who were staying at a hotel near the pier at the time of the shooting. The pair said they could hear “screams like you’d hear in a horror film” and saw a large group of people hovering around what appeared to be a body.

They said they were later able to I.D. Zarate for police because he had been “the only person walking away” and they remembered that he had a “scowl on his face.”

San Francisco Police Department Officer Raymond Ortiz also testified Tuesday. He was part of the investigative team that processed the crime scene. He showed the jury pictures of some evidence obtained that day including crime tape around the chair Zarate had reportedly been sitting in, crime scene markers around Steinle’s tan sweater and sandals, and medical equipment near large blood stains.

Zarate, 54, admits shooting Steinle, but says it was an accident.

Steinle’s father testified Monday that before she died, she said to him: “Help me, dad.”

The prosecution said those were her last words.

While Garcia’s immigration status is what brought the case into the national spotlight, jurors will not hear evidence about that, and it will not be a factor in the trial.

Steinle’s murder became a signature issue for Donald Trump as he was running for president. He invoked the murder in calling for the construction of a wall on the Mexican border and stepping up deportations and cracking down on illegal immigration.

  1. Was her dad with her? The time to help her would have been before Zarate shot her.

    • The time to help her would have been before San Francisco became a sanctuary city, enabling criminals to run free amongst American citizens.

    • Sopater . . . Pray tell, how was her father supposed to help her, before the fact? Do you think he was clairvoyant that he knew his daughter was just about to be murdered? I am astonished at your comment. What was he supposed to do? I just don’t understand what you feel he should have done to accomplish . . .”The time to help her would have been before Zarate shot her.” I’ll probably be thinking on this quandary the rest of the day.

      • I didn’t mean to fault the father for not helping her before she was shot, I was only pointing out that after she was shot, there was essentially nothing that he could do at that point.

Clairvoyance is seldom a contributing factor when a deadly assault is averted by avoidance or even by resisting with quick and deadly force.

    • Sure-that’s EASY for YOU to say….

    • Are you sure you meant to type this response? Because it is so off based it is perplexing. No one can protect everyone all the time. But to let criminals into your country unfettered is asking for problems. What was her dad to do? Not take a nice stroll along a popular tourist destination?
      Geesh, confusing.

    • @Sopater:

It’s unconscionable that you are putting the onus on Kate’s father, instead of on the San Francisco city government (and now all of California with the passage of the sanctuary state bill) for not preventing her murder by enabling criminals like illegal alien Jose Zarate.

  2. This is so heartbreaking My heart and prayers go out to the family. This is what the sick liberal left wants. President Trump is our only hope.

    • Diane . . . Amen to that! I personally have no doubt that the Heavens were looking out for us the day President Trump was elected. Things had gone downhill so much that trying to get things into reverse was beyond what us humans could handle on our own.

  3. Californians should know that, thanks to the state legislature & Gov. Jerry Brown, California is now a sanctuary state where scumbag illegals like Jose Zarate are protected.

    • Dr Eowyn . . . It is tragic that this happened to anyone, but it might have been a far better “learning experience” if it had happened to the daughter of one of the die hard proponents of “sanctuary cities.” Anyone with half a brain ought to realize that this could happen to any California citizen as long as these crazy Progressive ideas prevail.

  4. For the life of me, I cannot understand people like Jerry Brown who insist on befriending illegal aliens to the detriment of our own citizens. It seems that the Kate Stienle public murder would be a wake-up call for every single American citizen, especially after all the deaths because of illegals driving while drunk.

A prominent question on my mind, notwithstanding this killer had no right or business being here, would be what was he doing ‘gun in hand’ in clearly a unthreatening circumstance, with clearly his finger on the trigger. “Accident”…..Only a real fool could fall for that.

    • Kevin . . . You have brought up a very worthy question. Evidently this same gun was stolen from a car which belonged to some law enforcement agent. Supposedly, this felon claims that he found it under a bench on the pier. Why would anyone who went to the lengths to steal the gun, just walk away leaving it? My greatest concern is that the jury may perhaps be stacked with dimwits who go along with the Sanctuary City notion, and that they will find this fool guilty of a lesser crime. I fervently pray that the powers of Heaven influence all those on the jury that hear this trial that they come to a decision that is true justice, and furthermore, may all those who present the case against this felon be influenced from on high, to be eloquent, to speak to the very hearts of each of the jury members. This case is not just about getting justice for this unfortunate young women . . . it has consequences to all citizens of this nation.

May God Bless these judicial proceedings!

    An Eye for an Eye
17 “Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death. 18 Whoever takes an animal’s life shall make it good, life for life. 19 If anyone injures his neighbor, as he has done it shall be done to him, 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; whatever injury he has given a person shall be given to him. 21 Whoever kills an animal shall make it good, and whoever kills a person shall be put to death. 22 You shall have the same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am the Lord your God.”

  7. The shooter claims it was an honest mistake, but he made no effort to run towards the girl and assist. What an ass. I refuse to buy his lies. Now, for a jury with some common sense, which seems to be sparse in Ca. these days.
That poor father heard words no daddy should ever have to hear. Bless that family.

  8. There are parts of America that are vile and the only man who is exposing them is Tommy Sotomayor!
You NEVER heard Obama, Sharpton, Jackson and Co talk about them.
So go to You Tube and type in Tommy Sotomayor and watch his videos.
    They will blow your mind!
50,000,000 fathers NEVER heard the last words of their children, as they were slaughtered in the Death Camps of America:

What is the total number of legal abortions since 1973?
Since the legalization of abortion in 1973, there have been approximately 50 million abortions performed in the United States.

How many abortions are performed in the United States each year?
According to the Guttmacher Institute, there were 1.21 million abortions performed in the United States in 2008, the most recent year for which data is available. This amounts to 3,322 abortions per day.

Dr. Martin Haskell giving a presentation at the 16th Annual Meeting of the National Abortion Federation Conference in 1992 in San Diego. It was a gathering of abortionists — men and women who make their living by killing babies. Haskell was describing to his audience how to do a partial-birth abortion. Listen to his words about how this procedure takes place:

“The surgeon then introduces large grasping forceps … through the vaginal and cervical canal … He moves the tip of the instrument carefully towards the fetal lower extremities — and pulls the extremity into the vagina …The surgeon then uses his fingers to deliver the opposite lower extremity, then the torso, the shoulders, and the upper extremities. The skull lodges in the internal os. The fetus is oriented … spine up … The surgeon then takes a pair of blunt curved Metzenbaum scissors in the right hand. … the surgeon then forces the scissors into the base of the skull–spreads the scissors to enlarge the opening. The surgeon–surgeon then introduces a suction catheter into this hole and evacuates the skull contents.”

Haskell, having described these brutal details, shows his audience a video of himself doing one of these procedures. And at the end of the video, after the sound of the suction machine taking the brains out of the baby’s head, the audience applauds.

    • Buddy . . . What a horrific ordeal for a tiny human to go through. It is a horrible blot on this land that we have thousands of persons who make a living out of the death and dismember of these tiny beings. To read that doctor’s description of the procedure, and then have those who participated in this seminar clap at the end . . . we can be well assured that Satan and his minions are alive and doing all they can do to seduce the children of God the Father. Although it is heinous to read, and contemplate, this is nevertheless information that all those who are actively opposing this horrific practice should understand . . . thank you for bringing it to us.

  9. Said it before and will say again….this State refutation of federal law, like CA recent institution of “sanctuary status,” has been tried before and defeated handily by the federal government. So. Carolina objected to a federal tariff and declared it to be non-enforced within its state boundaries….Jackson took them on Constitutionally. Calhoun even resigned as VP so he could go back to the legislature and help pass a law that allowed Jackson to enforce the federal law in So. Carolina WITH US MILITARY if needed……

Pretty sure Trump is the only President of the USA in many, many years to display the Jackson portrait prominantly in his oval office……the general public should know all the reasons why…..but, also pretty sure they are ignorant of anything back beyond, say…the year 2000—so they don’t know now, never did through all their years of education, and never will know….
