Malaysia, Indonesia Muslim groups calling for Starbucks boycott

From Muslim groups in Malaysia and Indonesia have called for a boycott of Starbucks because of the coffee chain’s support for LGBT rights.

Malaysian group Perkasa, which supports a hard-line form of Islam and nationalism, this week called on its more than 500,000 members to stay away from Starbucks coffee shops. This week and last, leaders of Indonesia’s second largest mainstream Muslim group, Muhammadiyah, with an estimated 29 million members, denounced the chain.

The groups were apparently reacting to comments made several years ago by former CEO Howard Schultz in support of gay rights that drew renewed attention amid an increasingly anti-LGBT climate in both of the predominantly Muslim countries.

Perkasa said in a statement that the Malaysian government should revoke the trading license given to Starbucks and other companies such as Microsoft and Apple that support LGBT rights and same-sex marriage.

Amini Amir Abdullah, who heads Perkasa’s Islamic affairs bureau, said Muslims should stay away from Starbucks because its pro-gay rights policy is against Islam and Malaysia’s constitution.

Sodomy is illegal in Malaysia and punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, but a case before the Constitutional Court is seeking to criminalize gay sex and sex outside of marriage.

A boycott Starbucks hashtag was briefly popular on Twitter in Indonesia and shares of the company that operates Starbucks in the country fell sharply this week. But its stores in the capital Jakarta appeared as popular as ever.

Gavin Bowring, a Malaysia analyst at risk consulting company Eurasia Group, said the boycott was unlikely to amount to much but reflected “a growing tendency toward conservatism and strict adherence to Islamic principles.”

  2. These corporations bring this on themselves by making proclamations about their “endorsements”.
Really inappropriate to try to capitalize on taking positions on sex, race and political affiliation.
    I boycott lots of things.
    Because they hate Trump.
Because they violate traditional Catholic (and in some cases Christian/Biblical scripture.
Because the thought of deviants and sworn enemies of Western society handling my food is unacceptable
Sharing certain values with Islam seems in a way incongruous, but America is all about personal freedom. It is the cmmie/progressives who are trying to use our tolerances to undermine our values who are the root of the problem, and their politically correct rules, and our delusional white guilt which tear at our fabric.
    Thankyou President Trump

At least they’re not boycotting Starbucks cause of the fecal matter found in Starbucks’ iced coffee drinks.

I would think sales would actually increase in that filthy part of the world!

  5. What the heck is Islamic principals? Do they even exist? It is one big contradiction in their beliefs having to do with sex.
As for boycotting Starbucks, not a problem. Years ago I tried an ice drink and after paying gazillions of dollars, after removing the ice, it amounted to less than 4 last trip there. It was swill anyways.

    • I don’t think they KNOW what they believe. I think their whole “religion” is just geared to get everyone talking about THEM,listening to what THEY say, trying to understand THEM,watching THEM on YouTube, paying attention to THEM on the News. THEY’RE MEDIA WHORES. (Well-they’re OTHER kinds of whores too,but for THIS post…..)

      • That is the reason they will never fit in here. They expect us to do the adapting.
I am also tired of the liberals telling us we have to open our border that this isn’t who we are and to look at the Irish and Italians we took in. They forget to mention that the groups that immigrated here had every intention of assimilating and their purpose was to work and fit in, no take over or kill us and demand we change to their customs. They also forget to mention the horrible treatment those two groups received. And sharia law was never mentioned by them.

        • Exactly. Other immigrants came here looking to become one of us; Muslims come here intending to make us become one of them. At least the fundamentalist – jihadists.
And yes, Christian missionaries go abroad for the same purpose, but not with the idea of forcing their archaic laws on others, or of beheading those who don’t convert… in those foreign countries!

  8. looks like folks in the usa are calling on boycotting the pro-lgbt starbucks
(I guess the “b” in lgbt doesn’t stand for “black”) for new reasons: racial discrimination.
“Starbucks issues apology after two black men were handcuffed and removed from café”

apparently, while they were waiting for a friend inside the starbucks, the philadelphia, city of “brotherly love”, starbucks manager did not desire their presence

    • Since when do people loiter at Starbucks without buying anything? It’s the go to meeting spot where you can use their facilities/take up customer space without buying anything? Never knew that.

Liberals will never give up their beloved coffee and I doubt this call for a boycott will have any effect on their business.
