Student gets suspended after liking picture of a gun on Instagram

serious

The gun the student liked was an AIRSOFT gun. INSANITY.

From NY Post: A middle school student in Ohio found himself in the crosshairs after “liking” a photo of a gun on social media, complete with the caption “ready.”

Zachary Bowlin, a seventh-grader at Edgewood Middle School in Trenton, received a 10-day suspension after liking the Instagram photo of an airsoft gun late Thursday.

“I don’t think I did anything wrong,” he told KRON. “[The] next morning, they called me down and, like, patted me down and checked me for weapons. Then, they told me I was getting expelled or suspended or whatever.”

Administrators sent Bowlin home with a note indicating the reason for his suspension – liking a post on social media that indicated potential violence.

“I was livid,” Bowlin’s father, Martin Bowlin, told the station. “He never shared, he never commented, never made a threatening post … [he] just liked it.”

In an email to parents the morning after Bowlin liked the post, administrators said they learned of an “alleged threat” of a student bringing a gun to school. “We act on any potential threat to student safety swiftly and with the utmost importance,” the message to parents read, according to WXIX. “This morning, the alleged threat was addressed and we can assure you that all students at Edgewood Middle School are safe and school will continue as normal. Thank you.”

Edgewood City Schools Superintendent Russ Fussnecker said the district has “zero tolerance” of violent, disruptive, harassing, bullying or inappropriate behavior on behalf of students – including while off school grounds if it potentially impacts the classroom.

“As the Superintendent of the Edgewood City Schools, I assure you that any social media threat will be taken serious including those who ‘like’ the post when it potentially endangers the health and safety of students or adversely affects the educational process,” Fussnecker’s statement concluded.

Bowlin’s parents said school administrators ultimately dropped the 10-day suspension after speaking with them.

  2. Which overpaid bureaucrat scoured Instagram for “likes”? This is beyond ridiculous. I don’t feel any safer, just the opposite in fact.

    • Christy . . . this was exactly what I feared, at first I thought perhaps he was accessing social media at school . . . but the fact that school authorities are trolling social media sites for content regarding their students. How long until they are monitoring “parents,” or “other family members” for their “likes” or “dislikes.” This is absolutely ludicrous, and an abomination as far as the rights of individuals to have privacy. There is little doubt that families should home school if at all possible.

    • That was my first thought. How did the admin know he had viewed the page in the first place, and that it was him that liked it? My guess is via a school owned laptop that is sent home with the children to do “homework” on. I’ve seen news stories how schools used these laptops tp spy on kids and their families at home.

  3. Marxists want children to be “wards of the State.” YOUR children. Teachers being paid with YOUR money, earned by YOUR labor do to YOUR children what those seeking to control (enslave) everyone, including YOU, what a very few in control of society (the world) order them to do. That is the order being sought by the chaos being created.

  4. Isn’t there even ONE attorney willing to protect these people’s rights? This one is outright THOUGHT CONTROL. This kid needs to sue their asses off for trampling his Constitutional AND Civil Rights.Same goes for all these kids who get suspended for chewing their bread into the shape of a gun, forming a gun shape with their hand or any other ridiculous extremist punishment for no LOGICAL reason. I can’t believe the Parents of kids treated this way just suck it up and change their lives and hand over their Rights to the Socialists. At the very LEAST they need to review the rights these “educators” have given themselves to force this crap on students. Maybe they need to be removed from their employment if they can’t control their Constitutional over-reach.

  6. This is why kids should be home with their family and homeschooled and not subject to this insanity. Sue the school! Sue the super (scratch that!) “under” intendant. What would be very interesting would be for all kids in that school, and their parents, to like he same pic or start liking pics of other guns. But of course, that would require a community of lucid people rather than stupid, brainwashed, scared into compliance, state-worshiping sheeple and I doubt many exist these days! This is beyond inane, it’s insane! But in a country where a bite and a tart or cookie that looks like a gun can mean trouble, what can be expected?

  7. This young man did not fill one of their requirements for zero tolerance. He was not a threat and someone’s head should roll on this one.
They have no right to control what is in a person’s mind and thoughts. He had no weapon and never did.
How soon can we rid this country of all these loonies?

  8. Besides the initial insult and breach of the right of this kid to be “secure int heir persons and effects” etc., how did this filthy propaganda mill they dare call a school hear about the kid’s “like” of something? That would mean they were actively spying on the student in question, and should be sued into closure or the positions and tenure of the responsible individuals stripped. Mind you if they were actively spying on the student, doesn’t that bring up creepy “gestapo” overtones, the “papers please” bolshevik psychosis, that should really be widely addressed?

  9. I would get the best attorney and make the school prove the little boy had any evil intentions.
They seem to be set on monitoring everything, I hope one of them starts monitoring the channel for common sense.
