Nordstrom to drop Ivanka Trump’s clothing, accessories line

ivankaIt’s not a “political position.” Riiiiiiight.

The Nordstrom family has donated to republicans in the past. According to opensecrets.org, family members donated to Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, with a lot of money going to other democrats lately (and no money to Trump, from what I can see). It’s a Seattle business, after all.

From Yahoo: Nordstrom will stop selling Ivanka Trump clothing and accessories, creating some questions about the future of the brand elsewhere.

The Seattle-based department store chain said the decision was based on the sales performance of the first daughter’s brand. Neiman Marcus may be the next one to pull back on the label, as the branded jewelry is nowhere to be seen on the upscale retailer’s website as of Friday.

“We’ve said all along we make buying decisions based on performance,” said Nordstrom in a statement emailed to The Associated Press. “We’ve got thousands of brands— more than 2,000 offered on the site alone. Reviewing their merit and making edits is part of the regular rhythm of our business.

Nordstrom said that each year the chain cuts about 10 percent and refreshes its assortment with about the same amount. “In this case, based on the brand’s performance we’ve decided not to buy it for this season,” Nordstrom added.

Neiman Marcus couldn’t be immediately reached for comment. Macy’s and Dillard’s are also among the retailers that carry the Ivanka brand but didn’t immediately reply to AP’s query.

The move by Nordstrom Inc. comes amid a social media campaign called “Grab Your Wallet,” urging a boycott of stores that stock Ivanka Trump or Donald Trump products.

Wendy Liebmann, CEO of WSL Strategic Retail, says that retailers walk a tight rope when it comes to celebrity brands but given the politics surrounding the Ivanka Trump brand, that only adds extra controversy, particularly given such a politically divisive climate. Liebmann noted a decision of whether to pull a brand is politically loaded even if it’s based on poor sales performance.

“The brand is vulnerable,” Liebmann said. “Retailers view their role as having the right products for the right consumer, not being pulled in a political situation.” She noted that some shoppers may not want to wear the Ivanka Trump brand because they may want to avoid making a political statement.

Ivanka Trump announced earlier this month that she would take a leave of absence from her clothing and accessories business as well as the Trump organization.

According to a later article, the retailer also responded to the criticism on Twitter, saying: “We hope that offering a vendor’s products isn’t misunderstood as us taking a political position; we’re not. Our customers can make choices about what they purchase based on personal views & we’ll continue to give them options.”

Ivanka Trump Brand  responded to claims retailer Nordstrom dropped her fashion brand. “Nordstrom ordered both apparel and shoes for the spring, and followed through with the orders on the apparel,” a spokesperson for the Ivanka Trump brand told Refinery29 on Friday.

“They canceled the shoe order, kept the apparel order and moved the apparel from online into stores. It’s there,” the statement concluded. Rosemary K. Young, senior director of marketing at Ivanka Trump, also explained to Refinery29 that the brand is doing well, despite recent reports.

You don’t need to shop at Nordstrom to order Ivanka Trump clothing and accessories. Do so here.

  1. I’ve shopped Nordstrom fewer than a handful of times in my life, which is sufficient. That’s just “part of the regular rhythm” of my purchasing habits.

    • I drove by a Nordstrom once.

      • truckjunkie . . . you are too funny for words! Although, I find that I am in the same boat. I just don’t shop at Nordstrom, and this latest “non-political” action of theirs does not convince me that I should become a regular shopper. I for one am sick and tired of big money being able to put the squeeze on when other’s act in a manner that goes against their personal political beliefs. If this is allowed to gain hold in our country, it will be the big money that calls all the shots!

It is the Trump haters they are responding to. I’d bet the Trump supporters out number them 100 to 1, but the supporters are just not calling or emailing to complain.

  3. Never thought Nordstrom would join the bigots. I was once a diehard Nordstromer, but became a second-hand shopper years ago. I will never give my hardearned money to a bigoted store, which Nordstrom has become.

  4. So a store making such a political statement says it isn’t political. Now they want us to believe this has to do with the amount of sales. That, I don’t believe. She has affordable clothing that looks nice. Her jewelry looks better than a lot they are putting out there now.
The left has cried for years, leave the family of the President alone, but they have done nothing to protect our new First Family and have attacked every member since day one. Hypocrites.
When all these deptment stores start playing these games, I start playing also, with my billfold.
    The list keeps growing.

    • Glenn47 . . . you are very perceptive regarding the hypocritical nature of these large business entities. I also really love to play the game also . . . by withholding that green stuff in my wallet.

  5. I notice Conservatives are less likely to shop,or NOT shop,at a particular store just because someone instructs them to do it JUST to make a point. Democrats, however, will burn down their own cities to show their displeasure as something they can’t change anyway.

    • truckjunkie . . . you have brought up an extremely valid point. I think perhaps that is because Democrats suffer with mental disease to begin with, so their experience of “extreme actions” is rather pronounced, whereas Conservatives pretty much just believe in “live and let live” without having to join major crusades.

  6. Retail suicide. Such bs-since when do make a “statement” about pulling a brand and say that isn’t making a statement. Give me a break.
Are they going to publish all the other brands they will not be carrying next year. Customers don’t care or don’t notice-but they will now.
More people will NOT shop Nordies than new customers flocking in…meh-it’s their funeral. Remember most of these idiots do not have jobs.
One more to add to the boycott list.

  7. It won’t be long when all those that have pulled away from Ivanka will be kissing her a#%~. You see now in vogue are the TrashKardashians, the Beyoncé and her “new look” and the Madona of the dumpsters and so on, what is up now for sure will come down since Obama-mama has gone into oblivion, and Ivanka will continue to be IVANKA. Long live decency,

  8. Nordstrom’s has made a tactical error – just like Macy’s did when they dropped the Donald Trump line of men’s accessories in 2015 the day after he made a comment about illegal aliens. I am confident that Nordstrom’s didn’t vet the callers to see if they had an account or by checking the caller’s email against their .com database to verify if they were indeed a bonafide customer. Stupid and short-sighted Nordstrom’s forgot that for every one SJW that called, there are a hundred real customers like me that they have now alienated. I went to Scottsdale Fashion Square today with my mother. We found everything we needed at Neiman’s and Dillard’s, so giving Nordstrom’s a miss won’t be a burden to us. Our list of companies to boycott just keeps getting longer and we are cool with that as we will no longer spend our $’s with companies who find us, and our President and his family, offensive.

  10. Sears, K-mart, Nordstrom…. Who’ll be next to take a seat on the sidlines.
Not only does their political bent hurt them, their whole business model is going stale. If they want to rush to irrelivance who am I to try to stop them.
Look what target’s decision to let men into women’s room and visaversa did for them. Their stock tanked and has yet to fully rebound. Same with penney’s deciding it was more important to advertise via homosexuals, etc. than to err on the side of morality. I no longer ‘boycott’ anybody. it’s easier to just keep a list of places that is O.K. to shop at.

  11. The closest Nordstrom to me is in weirdo Orange Co, CA…abt 30 miles over a coastal mountain road ….My kids routinely give me Nordstrom gift cards for Christmas b/c, when we lived in Utah, I’d shop the SLC Nordstrom for back to school clothes of (then) good quality and price, & they remember that. For sure, the Utah Nordstrom buyer was attuned to families. BUT,b/c the store buyer here routinely buys for the huge population of oil-rich Middle Eastern Arabs who live in this particular area of SoCal (& I HATE the “styles” that attract these sorts of buyers anyway—so NOT Inland Valley Art Teacher!!!!—I wear “Field and Stream” and “LL Bean” these days :)…..)…….I can’t afford anything but a pack of socks for my $100 gift certificate…..once I got some suede clogs on sale….and then my new rescue dog chewed them up. 🙂 I guess at least the dog had “Good Taste” out of all of this….even if I’ve never benefited!!!!!

  12. The squeaky wheel gets the oil !!!! Hey everyone, I just called Nordstrom to complain about this. I don’t think this is over with yet. You can call Nordstrom Corporate at (206) 628-2111 and ask to speak with someone about this issue. They actually have a dedicated team taking comments and typing them into the computer word for word. You can also make commnets on their website. http://www.corporate-office-headquarters.com/nordstrom-inc
They will respond to wherever the most pressure is coming from. This is not about whether you buy Ivanka Trump or not, it’s about not letting our voices and our choices be silenced by a brainwashed mob. If conservatives don’t fight back on this then we will continue to see businesses cave and much more. How many illegals and Syrian refugees shop at Nordstrom ? How many BLM and Soros paid anarchists shop Nordstrom? I have been a Nordstrom card holder for over 30 years and while I don’t do a lot of shopping, when I do I appreciate dealing with a store that treats it’s customers with dignity unlike most of the other Jewish owned dept stores like Macy’s, who by the way committed fraud by charging me $100.00 on my account for a service I never signed up for. I don’t want to have to boycott Nordstrom but I will if this ship doesn’t turn around.

  13. Nordstrom’s decision last week to cut first daughter Ivanka Trump’s fashion line has sparked a tremendous backlash from consumers—especially women—who say the company’s move has led them to boycott the store and cut up their Nordstrom’s cards.
