Rep. John Lewis, who calls Trump illegitimate, is a property-tax dodger

On NBC’s Meet the Press on January 14, 2017, Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) said this about President Donald John Trump:

“I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president. I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected. And they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”

Lewis managed to avoid noting that none other than the now former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has stated there’s no evidence that Russian hackers had changed vote tallies or interfered with voting systems in the 2016 presidential election.

It turns out that it is John Lewis who has dubious legitimacy.

GotNews reports, Jan. 18, 2017, that Lewis “didn’t pay property taxes on his nearly $1 million fancy Washington, D.C. townhouse on Capitol Hill, despite being in Congress for decades, where the salary for a Representative starts at $174,000 per year.

Public records show Lewis consistently failed to pay in full his property taxes on his DC townhouse at 219 3rd Street SE on Capitol Hill, since 2008:

In 2010, legal action was threatened against Lewis for his failure to pay property taxes, as documents exclusively obtained by GotNews show.

Lewis’ fancy townhouse at 219 3rd Street SE right next to Capitol Hill was worth more than $810,000 in 2012 according to Nexis assessment records.

Lewis was among the Democrat legislators who boycotted Trump’s inauguration.

As a long-time congressman, Lewis’ salary is at least $174,000 a year, which makes him richer than 92% of Americans.

  1. I remember him at his prime, when he was a fiery speaker for universal rights and justice. It’s remarkable how very far one can decline under the lash of a high income with tens of thousands of dollars of privileges & perks!

  2. I neglected to supply this useful citation from Wikipedia. And I must acknowledge that he remained faithful to his origins in the non-violent sector of the early Sixties civil rights movement, and his work under Dr M L King. Most of the others near him succumbed to advocacy of violence.

  3. Lewis represents a district on the west side of Atlanta, very progressive and pro Democrat. A drive through there (if you have the nerve) will give you a firm grasp of why he ‘rules’ it. Rich, white liberals, lower middle class blacks, a very prominent gay presence and gov’t housing projects all brought together like a mad Klee painting. It goes from opulence to a bombed out 3rd world country within a block. Lewis panders to whatever group he is speaking to at the moment, plays upon fears blown entirely out of proportion and continues with the tired old promise of fighting for the people. Truth is, he’s accomplished nothing but to oppose him puts any of his constituents into mortal fear. No one will admit publicly that Lewis is not very bright and obviously just a con man ala Al Sharpton but he has ties to the Great King and in Atlanta King is infallible as well as a quasi religious figure, more god than man. By default, to speak ill of Lewis is to commit heresy. Nobody could ask for a better situation! He’ll be in Congress until he dies.

  4. I have seen Lewis verbally losing sparing matches with Trey Gowdy! Lewis is a despicable slime ball, he has corruption oozing off of his very presence. In self-defense, I would turn that into a mud-hole, and feel that I had just done humanity a big favor!

  5. John Lewis is no longer about Equal Rights or Civil Rights, but about special privileges for those that support the Democrat/Socialist Party.
The Democrat Party is no longer interested in bettering the lives of working people, the middle-class, or building our American Economy, but only in Power, using Marxist/Leninist philosophy and Alinsky tactics to fool the gullible, greedy, and immoral into destroying the worlds greatest economy that also once was the freest and most open. All of this to destroy our Nation Sovereignty and sell us into a Globalist world govt. This is TREASON of the worst sort.

I had hoped that more ‘Liberal/ Progressive Democrats’ had joined him in refusing to attend the Inauguration. Both to identify their dis-loyalty and because Article I, Section 5, Paragraph 2 of the Constitution states:
“Each House may determine the Rules of its Proceedings, punish its Members for disorderly Behavior, and, with the Concurrence of two thirds, expel a member.”
If 74 or more Dems had boycotted the Inauguration, all those could have been charged with “disorderly Behavior” (refusing to recognize the elected President). Those charged could not vote on any decision to “Expel” because they were Co-conspirators’. 241 Republican Congressmen would constitute the 2/3s necessary to expel over the remaining 120 Dems.

The House should still vote to censure and punish all those that boycotted the Inauguration by fining them one month’s salary (or more) and applying those funds to retiring the Federal Debt*. This could be done by simple majority. Also those accused would be “recused” from voting. However, I doubt Paul Ryan has the Guts & Gumption to do so, but it was a pretty thought, a Constitutional solution to stop the rudeness.

*Note – I say “Federal Debt”, not “National Debt”, because most of it was created by the Federal Govt, not for “National Interests”. Most is artificial, created by and for the Federal Reserve, in the form of “interest” paid for “debt-money” they created by book-keeping entry.

It amazes me that he could actually so callously throw around the word “legitimate” after these past eight years.

Only the ignorant, traitorous liars, or cowards,….referred to obama as president.

  7. I’ve had the misfortune to hear Lewis speak, and it seems to me he’s in a contest with Elija Cummings to be the stoopidest man, of any ethnicity, on Earth! But that’s all right—he can refuse to pay his property taxes because to insist he do so would be “racist”!
President Trump, DRAIN THE SWAMP, starting with these two!!!

    • True and wasn’t it Cummings doing Pelosi’s bidding by trying hard to stone wall the hearings.
They are all about the black caucus. Which should be eliminated.
Lewis has long over played his hero status.

    • Amen and Amen! It is outrageous that someone holding public office would be treated differently than the every day Joe when it comes to not paying their taxes!

      • Ya know-when we think about it,wouldn’t Congress be a great place to bring in the investigations of Politians’ unpaid debts,in SPITE of the money they’ve all amassed, and “hold their feet to the fire”? That would point out to America the deadbeats we have representing us,and would serve to show us who can’t be trusted and need to be removed from their seats

        • And wouldn’t it be nice if these sleaze-bags that swear before God every 2 years to “protect and defend the Constitution” actually read it! And tried to understand what the words meant, rather than twisting everything into “NewSpeak”.

        • Yes,yes truck…and PLEASE PLEASE someone present some valid info to me that tells/explains why and HOW someone who was elected to public office, like Harry Reid, or even Hillary Clinton, can spend their entire lives in public service in the Federal Government…with the salaries they get for this…that do NOT EXCEED, for instance, the combined salaries that my husband and I make here in inflated CA….and yet, they, after 30 years of this income….come out of these jobs as multi-millionaires…and I’m still barely making my monthly bills, can not retire, and have been audited to get MORE money out of me so many times that it’s almost laughable by now…..(CA is so broke, for instance…that they went back to the most distant year legal to start auditing to “cull” more money out of WORKING LEGAL citizens lately…didn’t see that coming, but should have…..). Bottom line….if what Harry and Hillary, just for example, have done is legal and “anyone could have done it,” then……I want to meet all their tax accountants, lawyers, and friends. I want them to “teach me” how to make myself into a multi-millionare on the public payroll…..because, I’m missing something here in my “retirement” planning.

  9. Dear John Lewis, just because you got cracked upside your head by a fellow Democrat at Selma does not exempt you from paying property taxes. Thank you.

  10. Thank you Dr. Eowyn for this significant post. January 20th was a day for coming together as the American people, not a day that should be devoted to cruel and mean representations that are not true. Lewis gave an example of how to be a coward, not a hero. Shame on him and those like him.
