Don’t let the Left brainwash you: Thanksgiving is a RELIGIOUS holiday

Thanksgiving is one of the most beloved holidays in America.

But in the hands of liberals and their schools and MSM, Thanksgiving has long become yet another occasion for white guilt. If you want an illustration, see my 2010 post “Thanksgiving card from my liberal friend“.

But did you know that unlike other secular holidays like Labor Day or the Fourth of July, the Thanksgiving that you think is a secular holiday is actually a national holiday that is explicitly religious in nature?

As shown in the quotes below, Thanksgiving was instituted as a day to thank God for the many blessings He has bestowed on America.

In 1789, in his first year in office, President George Washington called for a day of Thanksgiving because —

“it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor.”

In 1815, President James Madison issued a proclamation for “a day of thanksgiving and of devout acknowledgments to Almighty God for His great goodness.” After Madison, however, Thanksgiving reverted to a regional celebration in New England for 48 years.

In 1863, magazine editor Sarah Josepha Hale petitioned the Lincoln administration that “a day of Thanksgiving now needs National recognition and authoritive fixation, only, to become permanently, an American custom and institution.”

In a proclamation in the midst of the Civil War on October 3, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving an official national holiday. Here is the full text of his proclamation:

“The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God.

“In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

“Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years, with large increase of freedom.

“No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.

“It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.

“In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

“Done at the city of Washington, this third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-eighth.”

America has just lived through the most divisive election in our lifetime. To echo the words of Lincoln, on this day, “with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience,” we “fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility and Union.”

We of the Fellowship of the Minds also take this occasion to thank all our readers and especially our faithful regular commenters who contribute so much to this little blog with their encouragement, trenchant observation, insight and righteous outrage.

God bless you, and may God bless America,

  2. How long before the Left attacks this holiday? They will prefer a generic name like Indigenous Day.

  5. I agree with ufferndan, love the lamp….and the washington pic..
yes, Dr. Eowyn, Thanksgiving is not about pilgrims and indians…not in my home.
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
Thanksgiving is about humility, repentance, gratitude, love, and reflecting on blessings we have through the power of God.
I am Thankful to God for sending His only begotten son to wash away our sins with His Blood. I am Grateful that our God created this temporal earth and the lives that are on it and we all have the opportunity for eternal life in heaven by believing in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.
I pray we all repent, follow Him, trust in the Lord, let the Holy Spirit enter our hearts to change us by being Washed In His Blood.
I pray we are all grateful for the opportunity of salvation through His Son.
I pray for our country and that the President-elect is able to lead us in the right direction back to our Lord and Savior.
God’s blessings on this Thanksgiving Day to everyone on FOTM, and to all Christians on earth, and to those who do not believe; I pray the Holy Spirit touches upon their hearts so they see the Truth before it’s too late.
Thanksgiving Day isn’t just one day out of the year….it’s every day we should be Thankful and on our knees Thanking the Lord for EVERYTHING.

  10. Yes, Thanksgiving is a holiday religious in nature, and I am grateful that it has persevered.
2016 has been a tough year for many of us; It certainly has been tough for me. I am grateful to Dr. Eowyn for her suggesting I start a GoFundMe drive, and I am grateful to all who helped me.
I am grateful that I still have my health and that I have been spared tragedy and grief. I am grateful that I finally got a new car to drive for Uber with. I am grateful to have a job. I am grateful for a roof over my head. (Our house owner, Mrs. Stare (Star-eh), we called her “Ma,” died just after Memorial Day. Her middle daughter took over care of the house). I am grateful to be up-to-date with the rent.

I have been learning, and I continue to learn, to persevere, to take proactive action regarding my problems and as busy and as tired as I have been, to keep up the pressure against my problems. I have begun to make progress. Like Billy Joel’s song “Angry Young Man” states, I am finding “that survival is a noble fight.”

I am also learning that, as important as politics and political discussion are, they are NO SUBSTITUTE for true religion, and that God Almighty put us all here for a Reason. So I admit it’s incumbent upon me to find out what that Reason is.

I wish everyone at FOTM a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving, and I am looking forward to better days ahead on all grounds. God Bless you all.
