Sunday Devotional: ‘You will be hated by all because of my name’

Luke 21:6, 12-19

Jesus said, “All that you see here–
the days will come when there will not be left
a stone upon another stone that will not be thrown down.”

“Before all this happens, however,
they will seize and persecute you,
they will hand you over to the synagogues and to prisons,
and they will have you led before kings and governors
because of my name.
It will lead to your giving testimony.
Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand,
for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking
that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute.
You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends,
and they will put some of you to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
but not a hair on your head will be destroyed.
By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”

As FOTM‘s TrailDust put it, we dodged a bullet on November 8. God listened to our prayers and America is spared from a President Hillary.

While we, with good reason, rejoice and celebrate what nonplussed pundits call a “historic election,” our Lord Jesus Christ reminds us to be on guard, watchful and vigilant, for:

“You will be hated by all . . . they will seize and persecute you . . . they will [even] put some of you to death . . . handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends . . . .”

Why?

“Because of my name”

For, as His followers, we are not of this world. Thus, the powers and all who are of this world will always hate and persecute us. And by their hate, we will know who they are (John 8:44).

Just remember that NOTHING we endure or will experience can ever even come close to what Jesus suffered. Nothing.

So when they hate, seize, persecute and kill us, look to Him on the Cross, so that one day we can say what St. Paul said (2 Timothy 4:7):

“I have fought a good fight;
I have finished my course;
I have kept the faith.”

May the love and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you,

~Eowyn

  2. I changed my avatar to reflect what Donald Rumsfool said about US prisoners of war in re of his war crime invasion of Iraq, so bear with me.

    As a Christian Quaker raised as RC, I heartily assent to this Devotion. However, this doesn’t mean that we’re to roll over and play/be dead, but rather to resist when needed to prevent a greater evil from taking place.

    God gave you free will, so choose!

      Ditto!

  3. When we stand for Christ in a Christian way, our rejection by the world will glorify GOD, but when we resort to name calling we will be persecuted for the name calling, and we will not glorify GOD…We must do GOD’s work GOD’s way…Always has been true, and will alwayse be true.

  4. TY. I can’t help but think of the small child who got thrown out of his home by his deranged mother, because he voted for Trump in school.
    Matthew 19:14
    But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
    While I am not vengeful, truth is my sword.

  5. Christianity is the only phenomenon in history that, the more it is persecuted, the more it grows. Case in point: When Mao ascended to power in China, there were about three million Christians in China. Mao vowed to eliminate every last one. Today, there are over 100 million Christians in China, some 40 years after his death. In other words, the percentage of the Chinese population that is Christian is bigger than it was when he ascended to power.
    It is always the same: Wherever Christianity is persecuted, it grows. I can think of no natural explanation for this effect, save for the identification witnesses experience upon seeing this persecution. So it proves the main point about human psychology: People, pushed up against the wall, will endure death for the sake of the truth rather than die for a lie. This, I believe, is the reason evil has its hour but always loses in the end: No one willingly dies for what he believes to be a lie.

  7. such sweet, heavenly truth in the face of harsh, earthly bitterness.
    Thank you, Dr. Eowyn, for reminding us of our roles as Christians.
    “Fear not, for I am with you;
    Be not dismayed, for I am your God.
    I will strengthen you,
    Yes, I will help you,
    I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
    if we are hated because of Jesus’ name, then we are doing our job as Christians…love trumps hate because God is love:
