Louisiana lawmaker labels Declaration of Independence racist in debate

From Fox News: The Declaration of Independence came under attack from an unlikely quarter—a state legislator.

Louisiana lawmaker Barbara Norton (D-Shreveport), argued that America’s founding document was racist during debate on a bill requiring public school students in the state to recite the Declaration of Independence daily, Fox & Friends reported Saturday.

“For the Declaration of Independence only Caucasians (were) free,” Norton, who is black, said Wednesday during the debate on the floor of the Louisiana House of Representatives. “And for you to bring a bill to require that our children will recite the Declaration of Independence I think it’s a little bit unfair.”

Rep. Valarie Hodges (R-Denham Springs) shelved the bill before lawmakers could vote on the proposal, which she sponsored. The measure would have required public school students in fourth through sixth grade to recite a passage from the Declaration of Independence.

Norton and Pat Smith (D-Baton Rouge) told Hodges that children shouldn’t have to recite words written at a time when slavery was prevalent, reading the document was used to bar blacks from voting at polling places and equality wasn’t extended to all people.

“Back in 1776 our forefathers who wrote the Declaration of Independence, I don’t believe they had any idea or that they thought for a moment that America would be as diverse as it is today,” Norton told KTAL-TV.

Hodges told the station Norton and the other critics of the bill were wrong. “They really just don’t get it and to me I really feel that it’s as important as Math and English and conjugating verbs,” she said, adding that it was important to educate children to become good citizens.

She also told the station she was astonished and saddened “at the hatred that was expressed at the forefathers and this document” during the debate.

For blacks like Barbara Norton, everything is racist. The day can’t come soon enough when that so promiscuously-used word loses its power and sting.

I hate anti American bigots who hate the constitution and everything it stands for. Yes, black people can be racists too. Democrats seem to be falling into this category an it is a shame.

  4. I just bet that many of us would pitch in and purchase a one-way ticket for Ms Norton so she could return to the glorious land of her fore-fathers–Africa. Since she is so very, very concerned about the history of slavery in this country . . . does she ever think about the fact that blacks also owned black slaves–it was not just white men.

The major question I have . . . if she is so very, very concerned about being true to “African-Americans,” please tell me . . . Why has she had her hair “straitened” to mimic the beauty of the hair of those who come from European ancestry??? Does she hate her own “blackness” to that extent. Obviously so. When she can comport herself as a “real natural black woman” she can come back and rail at me and others about the sins of whites, and slavery. Until then I find it pretty strange that she would go out of her way to mimic the hair of white slave holders!

    • Excellent Auntie, I would venture to guess she would be stunned to find when the French explorer arrived in Timbuctoo, to prove it existed, he found slaves being sold by blacks and Muslims.
And one of the first, if not the first slave owner in America was a black man, I believe his name was Johnson, one of the nastiest in the country.
Out of the millions of slaves sold, less than 400,000 arrived in the states, most went to Central and South America and Europe.
Some of the earliest slaves in America were the Irish.
Many of the slaves in America were indentured and were freed after a time. Many did not want to be free and chose to stay.

And the news media can’t understand the Donald Trump phenomenon. I can tell them easily. Trump’s success is national fire alarm. The house of America is burning, and if we don’t take drastic action immediately, it will burn to the ground. And many of us understand also, that there is no replacement for America. The ignorant woman in this article is one of many who would ruin any place she lived. I say, let’s make her our ambassador to Venezuela.

  7. Something else-When gun owners were pointing out, word for word, the validity of the Second Amendment, the Leftists were saying,”Fine,if you want your guns, you can have the SAME guns used when the Second Amendment was drafted. Modern guns don’t apply.
Now she’s pushing to restrict the use of the Pledge of Allegiance in school because when it was written,it didn’t apply to everyone equally. Same song,SECOND verse…..

  8. Another Kool-Aid drinker who has bought into the false narrative. We have to be careful about aggrieved people, because they secretly want to strike back. They have bought into a false sentimentality of the way things should have been, instead of the way things were, and that makes them ripe for the Orwellian conditioning of remembering things that did not happen.
And she fails to understand the most important thing: Leftists are the ABSOLUTE WORST racists of all.

  11. Maybe this negress should re-read the DoI, the 2nd paragraph of which states that “all men are created equal”.

No question about it, slavery was going on before, during and after the document was written but slalvery was, unfortunately, a requirement for farming and it was enabled by the ability of her lofty negro ancestors to hunt down their kinfolk to supply the trade. Had mechanized farming existed during the 1800’s her pampered black butt would likely be in Mother Africa, waddling around in a happy village, swatting flies and eating jungle meat.

While this unhappy creature has never been as slave and probably cannot name a member of her family that was such, what she apparently fails to grasp is that the DoI is the very document that opened the eyes of people to the wrongs of slavery and which lead to its abolition. Looks to me though that many of her bruthas and sistas are still quite happily ensconced on the gub’mint farm.

    Negros….always be bitchin’ bout sump’in.
