Sweden slams shut its open-door policy towards refugees

About time some one wised up.

Too little, too late for Sweden to control the refugees?

Too little, too late for Sweden to control the refugees?

The Guardian reports that Sweden needs “respite” from the tens of thousands of refugees knocking at its door and has announced tough measures to deter asylum seekers in a sharp reversal of its open-door policy towards people fleeing war and persecution.

The country’s generous asylum regime would revert to the “EU minimum” meaning that most refugees would receive only temporary residence permits from April. Sweden’s prime minister Stefan Löfven said identity checks would be imposed on all modes of transport, and the right to bring families to Sweden would be severely restricted.

“We are adapting Swedish legislation temporarily so that more people choose to seek asylum in other countries. We need respite,” Löfven said. “It pains me that Sweden is no longer capable of receiving asylum seekers at the high level we do today. We simply cannot do any more.

Refugees began arriving this autumn at a rate of 10,000 a week, until Sweden imposed border controls two weeks ago. Official estimates suggest up to 190,000 could come to the country of 10 million people this year.

The rise in refugee numbers has caused a frantic scramble to place roofs over their heads. At the weekend refugees arriving in the southern city of Malmö were forced to sleep on the streets because no beds could be found.

The changes were very difficult for the Social Democrats’ junior coalition partner, the Green party, seen as the most refugee-friendly of Sweden’s main political parties. The Greens’ deputy prime minister, Åsa Romson, broke into tears as she announced the measures. “This is a terrible decision,” she said later, admitting that the proposals would make life even more precarious for refugees. But quitting the government would have made a bad situation even worse, she added.

The leader of Sweden’s centre-right bloc, Anna Kinberg Batra, welcomed the measures but said they were not enough, and that asylum policy needed to be tightened even further. “Sweden needs to act now to bring order to an untenable situation,” she said.

Common sense finally prevailed over their emotions. The reversal in asylum policy was a reluctant decision, “more about practicalities than a new world view”, said Jonas Hinnfors, professor of politics at Gothenburg University. “The writing has been on the wall, the authorities cannot cope.”

Sweden’s new asylum regime will apply for three years. Temporary residence permits will be granted to all refugees apart from those relocated to Sweden under the EU’s quota scheme and families with children and unaccompanied children who have already arrived.  Sweden’s border police also announced a doubling of officers on Sweden’s southern coast, where most refugees arrive. Since the imposition of border controls on November 12th, the average number of asylum seekers has fallen from 1,507 per day to 1,222, according to immigration officials.

  1. Son of the Rabbit People

You’re going to have to try harder than that Sweden. Take it from America, if you give them temporary permits you’ll never be rid of them. If you say no more and they continue to sneak in, what are you going to do about it? What are you going to do about the empty-headed lefty kooks that tend to proliferate in the Northern hemisphere who are sure to start protesting any wise policy making?

  2. sweden is truly a retarded country, as evidenced by its leader, who just recently realized that baths require more water and energy than showers (yes, there was a story about that yesterday)

  5. I am glad that Sweden has wised up–now they just need to kick Asa Romson to the curb. I am sure she wept tears of frustration . . . “how are we ever going to separate our citizens from their wealth if we don’t have a burgeoning hoard of people who need to be taken care of?” Both Norway and Sweden are known for “rapes being committed by immigrants.” Isn’t that just a great plague to heap upon their wives, daughters, nieces, aunts, mothers? I affirm that it is right and correct that if one member of an immigrant family commits a crime–the entire family gets sent back to where they came from. Sweden has long been a beautiful country, when my Father visited on two different occasions he noted that you could drive for 50 miles, and never see litter in the streets. After seeing what they have done to other European countries–I’ll bet that their land will not remain pristine. What a horrible thing that just because some segment of the population seems to think that “their thinking is superior to others” they should be in charge of all this social engineering.

DCG . . . Once again you have brought us an excellent article. Thank you.

  7. Sadly, Sweden is another country we have removed from our bucket list, even though I have Ancestors from there. I agree with some preceding comments, too little too late. They work so hard to prove themselves liberal in every way, they have ended up shooting themselves in the foot.
Romano is an idiot sympathizer. Perhaps she should contact the family of the young woman that also was a sympathizer, that was raped and killed and left in a horrible position. Or the family of the young lady raped as she left work and died during the act.
Trying so hard to make themselves important, have destroyed their country and it’s culture.
They have yet to realize, these so called refugees, of which only one in five is Syrian, have no intention of appreciating their compassion.

  8. This just in from Norway:
Out of respect for “newcomers” recently housed on a military base, the pub there will be closed for the unforeseeable future. Spokesman for the Norwegian Army, Aleksander Jankov, says that leaders there have taken a wise and human step to do so. Naturally we’ll have a dialogue with both the county and administrators at the refugee center, but found it urgent that the refugees get established in peace and safety without partying and beer drinking within the same confines.

Britt-Inger Heggelund, who runs the private pub, is disappointed. We have plenty of customers here, especially on Saturdays, but now it is too quiet she says.

Reporter to the pub owner: But don’t you understand that the Army has to be considerate to newly arrived refugees?
Pub owner: Yes, perhaps I do. But the authorities chose this place as a refugee center knowing full well a pub was located next door. Besides, the Army could have given me notice. Instead I was ordered to close immediately. She hopes that the “no pub order” for the soldiers won’t be of a long duration. If it does, I have to close shop she says.

Well, this just shows how much abuse even soldiers will take. This base is located in a cold and remote region of Norway and the pub is probably the only thing that keeps them sane.

I weep for what used to be, and I also wonder if as much consideration is given when making collateral damage out of these people as living next door to a pub is. Guess not.

    • It is outrageous when a “host country” bends to the will of the newcomers. When this tactic is established by the host country’s government–it will only lead to further problems. The residents will despise the newcomers, and the hoards of newcomers will always in every instance feel that their wishes be granted. Talk about dumb!

  10. We do not hear much from Finland and refugees there, but this week the small town of Kempele was in the headlines. The Finnish prime minister had previously offered his private home in Kempele to house refugees. Not to worry, he has other homes.

On Monday 11/23/15 at 10:30 PM a fourteen year old girl in Kempele was raped and injured by two younger men she described as foreigners. Police won’t name the nationalities, but so-called refugees are already housed at a center there.

Not in English, but some photos here…..

    “Rape shocks Finland.
Police are asking people to remain calm, but the rape has set emotions in high gear in Finland. Rape committed by foreigners are so unusual that even the prime minister made a statement. He called the rape a cowardly act.”

Wonder if the PM’s offer to house refugees still stand.

Someone in Finland said that the multicultural road to peace and friendship is a rocky one. I’ll add that Finland has only begun the journey on that rocky road.

  12. WASHINGTON (AP) — “Amid a growing political controversy, the Obama administration on Wednesday reminded state officials across the country that states do not have legal authority to refuse to accept Syrian refugees.”

Oh really, Mr President? I thought that the Constitution was very clear on this matter; specifically, Article IV Section 4, and the Tenth Amendment to said document. Please show us how you are keeping individual States free from “Invasion and domestic Violence” and how your point is ‘specifically enumerated.’ I vote with the state governors who are defying you — and with the lifting of the veil of ignorance in Sweden.
