The truth about transgenderism and “gender-reassigment” surgery

If you’re contemplating major surgery, for your own interest and well being, it’s a good idea to:

  1. Get a second opinion.
  2. Do some research on your surgeon and, if in doubt, find another surgeon.
  3. Don’t depend on what the doctor tells you. God created us with a mind. Use it! With the ubiquity of information now available on the Internet, there is no excuse not to undertake your own research on whether that major surgery will actually cure or ameliorate whatever that ails you.

Given the above entirely sensible counsel, isn’t it strange that the media and pop culture, in their push for transgenderism, never tell you the risks of “gender-reassignment” surgery or whether post-surgery transgenders actually are happy?

Bruce Jenner then & nowBruce Jenner, poster-child of transgender propaganda

In a recent commentary in the Wall Street Journal, Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former psychiatrist-in-chief for Johns Hopkins Hospital and its current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, and author of six books and at least 125 peer-reviewed medical articles, reported on a 2011 study showing that the suicide rate among transgendered people who had reassignment surgery is 20 times higher than the suicide rate among non-transgender people.

The study was at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, which followed 324 people after they’d had sex-reassignment surgery for up to 30 years. The study showed that about 10 years after the surgery, transgendered people began to have increased mental difficulties. As they progressed through life, their suicide mortality rose almost 20 times above the comparable nontransgender population. McHugh points to the data as evidence that the high suicide rate trumps the typical surgery prescription propagated by many as the answer to gender confusion.

Dr. McHugh explains that transgender surgery is not the solution for people who suffer a “disorder of ‘assumption’” – the notion that their maleness or femaleness is different than what nature assigned to them biologically, much like other amorphic disorders, such as anorexia. The difference is that body parts are not amputated in an effort to “cure” other assumption disorders.

Dr. McHugh says, “This intensely felt sense of being transgendered constitutes a mental disorder in two respects. The first is that the idea of sex misalignment is simply mistaken – it does not correspond with physical reality. The second is that it can lead to grim psychological outcomes.” The transgendered person’s disorder is in the person’s “assumption” that they are different than the physical reality of their body, their maleness or femaleness, as assigned by nature. It is a disorder similar to a “dangerously thin” person suffering anorexia who looks in the mirror and thinks they are “overweight.”

While the Obama administration, Hollywood, and major media such as Time magazine promote transgenderism as normal, Dr. McHugh says these “policy makers and the media are doing no favors either to the public or the transgendered by treating their confusions as a right in need of defending rather than as a mental disorder that deserves understanding, treatment and prevention.”

Time transgender cover

In truth, although the surgery is called “gender reassignment,” the surgery does no such thing. After all the torturous body mutilations — shaving off the Adam’s apple; castrating the penis and testicles, or chopping off the breasts; gouging a hole as a pretend-vagina that must be “dilated” until the wound eventually scars over — the transgender’s body is still genetically and chromosomally what God had made.

That is why, like Dr. McHugh, psychiatrist Joseph Berger, M.D., board certified as a specialist by both the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, has stated there is no scientific basis for transgender.

In a statement against the Canadian federal government’s Bill C-279 (popularly known as the “bathroom bill”) giving special protection to transgenders, Dr. Berger stated that from a medical and scientific perspective there is no such thing as a “transgendered” person, and that terms such as “gender expression” and “gender identity” used in the bill are at the very least ambiguous, and are more an emotional appeal than a statement of objective scientific fact. Dr. Berger said in his statement:

“I have read the brief put forward by those advocating special rights, and I find nothing of scientific value in it. Words and phrases, such as ‘the inner space,’ are used that have no objective scientific basis. There seems to me to be no medical or scientific reason to grant any special rights or considerations to people who are unhappy with the sex they were born into, or to people who wish to dress in the clothes of the opposite sex. The so-called ‘confusion’ about their sexuality that a teenager or adult has is purely psychological. As a psychiatrist, I see no reason for people who identify themselves in these ways to have any rights or privileges different from everyone else in Canada.”

In other words, transgenderism is a psychological, not biological, disorder, which would explain why gender dysphoria (aka gender identity disorder) fluctuates over time —

  • For children: Dr. McHugh notes that studies from Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic of children who had expressed transgender feelings but for whom, over time, 70%-80% “spontaneously lost those feelings.” Indeed, Toronto specialist Ken Zucker, who opposes the use of sex change therapies, also asserts that only about 12% of boys and girls with gender dysphoria will still have persistent dysphoria as adults. This fact alone should lead even the most committed supporters of early intervention to err strongly on the side of caution.
  • For adults: More compelling than the malleability of transgender feelings among children is the recovery data of adult transgenders. Vanderbilt University and London’s Portman Clinic found that 70% to 80% of adult transgenders who had refrained from undergoing gender-reassignment surgery report that their feelings dissipate over time. In other words, the transgender disorder has a recovery rate of as high as 70-80%!

Johns Hopkins ended their sexual reassignment surgery in 1970 for the above reasons, but there is little in the news about that.

McHugh says that “given that close to 80% of such children would abandon their confusion and grow naturally into adult life if untreated, these medical interventions come close to abuse.” He recommends a prescription of devoted parenting instead.

McHugh adds that just as it is incumbent upon the medical community to begin to speak about truth on this matter, it is equally incumbent upon the mental health community to challenge the concept that what is in the mind can never be questioned. “Disorders of consciousness, after all, represent psychiatry’s domain; declaring them off-limits would eliminate the field.”

But that is exactly what states like Massachusetts, California and New Jersey have already done by passing laws barring psychiatrists and other mental health professionals from trying to help “transgendered” children to regain their natural gender feelings, even upon parental request. Instead, psychiatrists are told to refer these children to endocrinologists to prescribe gender bending/gender delaying hormone treatments that do not address the child’s psychological disorder.

These hormones have other physical side effects, too, such as delayed growth, sterility and more.

Dr. Judith Reisman told WND: “They simply reject the factual data. Goebbels said that if you repeat a lie often enough, soon everyone is repeating it, too. That is what has happened. Fact checking seems to be a way of the past.”

  1. Excellent column, one of the clearest I have read so far. It should be handed to everyone that is now confused in their feelings.
Thank you for a great explanation.

  2. Truth doesn’t matter. Nor the mental well being of these individuals. A narrative and political agenda trumps reason, biology, statistics, and analysis. You can’t fight with facts. Feelings and name calling (standard all-inclusive “bigot”) rule.

One question to ask is: has anyone ever come out of the closet and said, “I’m in the wrong body. I should be Japanese.” Or, “I was born in the wrong body. I am a horse”. or an alien or a reee, etc etc.
But people do cry out they are the wrong gender. Why?
Just as there are a thousand variations in “blonde” hair, there are thousands of variations of gender. If you are content the way you are, all male or all female, that’s fine, nobody insults you.
Females, criticizing a person for wanting to change their body. What a laugh. How many of you have sculptured nails, implants of one sort or another, false eyelashes, hide your “real you inner self as God made you” with makeup, and then shout out that people should stay the way God made them. Then quit getting your hair done. Let it grow as God made it. All your hair, not just on your head. Knock off the hiding your face with makeup. Go milk a cow with your sculptured nails.
And guys? Criticizing someone who “thinks” they are female? Everyone of us has some degree of female. We came from a female you dopes. From my experiences, the people who criticize others, are trying to hide what they themselves are, to one degree or another. I’m a guy, remember? I know a lot of you guys like wearing your wife’s panties. Anybody who works in an emergency room knows guys wear ladies underwear. So,, psssssst….don’t blow your cover by “protesting too much”.
My point is that it is silly to judge another person, unless they are harming an innocent person.
For years, I have wanted breast implants. My friends think I’m nuts. My wife thinks I need professional help.
Nobody seems to understand my needs. I am on the telephone all day and would just like a couple boobs implanted on my right thigh to have something to play with when I’m on the phone.
Which innocent person am I hurting?

    • Mark,

You’re equating chopping off one’s genitals with women wearing make-up? That’s a stretch even for you. May I suggest you append the word SARCASM to your comments? I know you and I know you’re yanking our chains — for what reason, it escapes me — but our readers don’t.

  4. Transgenderism (and homosexuality) is a very dangerous lifestyle (high suicide rate, deadly blood clots from hormone therapy, sterilization, high drug abuse rate, high rate of sexual partners, high rate of STDs including HIV, hours and hours every day spent trying to look like a “perfect” female but never quite attaining it because they are not female) and our society is encouraging it among our young people.
Who in their right mind would choose a life like that? You cannot be in your right mind or spiritually healthy if you are abusing your body in those ways.
I wonder who will be the first person to sue the government after they’ve had Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS) and realize they’ve gotten it all wrong? They will claim they had a mental disorder and the government obliged them during a mental crisis and contributed to their mutilation. They will claim the government should have helped them with psychological treatment, not cutting off genitalia and creating a eunuch with a wound called a “vagina” or a breast-less female and refusing their therapy while they were in crisis.
The damage done is irreparable…you can’t put a functioning penis back on once it has been removed and testicles will not regrow once they have been cut off (no babies to create with a wife), breasts will not grow spontaneously and produce nutritious life saving milk from mammary glands for babies to nurse.
SRS is like one of the final stages of committing suicide, because once they do it, they can’t go back to function how they were previously. They are trying to function as the gender they are not while having no function as to how they were…..they live their lives as an illusion and in limbo. Maybe plastic surgery can help give the illusion of what they were before the surgery but after SRS they are truly neither the gender they believe they want to be nor are they the functioning gender God blessed them with before the surgery, I believe people who are or think they might be transgendered should seek professional help and seek Jesus through prayer and church before or after the surgery. Mutilating one’s body to live an illusion of a fantasy does not heal the wounded spirit; but, seeking Jesus and addressing root problems will.

  5. Great post. “Gender identity” is fake. Most male trannies get sexually turned on by the thought of themselves “as women.” This is embarrassing, of course, so they invented the notion of “gender identity.” This is why it’s important to the medical/transgenderism industry that children be transsexualized — it validates their lies about an innate “gender identity” and hides the reality of their autogynephilia.

  6. he is going to regret it, he will have to put tons of make up on to pretend he is beautiful. He will have support from the weirdest people on earth and realize he is just as weird as they are. He will get old quick and realize it was easier being a man. It’s not like he will suddenly be a mother to his kids. He will still let others raise them while he spends all his money on self.

  7. IN Bruce Jenner s’ case, we see a man with access to money, one whose fame is waning–perhaps he was in the throws of mid life crisis–and unfortunately had the means to being about this change. The only problem that he brought himself through the change–so the same demons are going to assail him. Frankly, The Lord will judge him. All I can do is pray for him.

    • Auntie Lulu…once again, I’m on your wave-length…..Do you think all this angst….at least the angst to act…might be…at the age of mid-60’s, an attempt to “start life over again?” I mean—–look at “Caitlyn” who does NOT appear as a 65-yr-old woman——“she” appears to be trying to represent a woman in maybe “her” 40’s. For sure, if I had the dough and the unstructured time (I have to go to work every day to earn a living), I might make a few (far easier!) adjustments myself to ease me through this aging thing……I’d like to “drink from the Fountain of Youth myself so I might look in the mirror myelf each morning and see extended and hopeful days ahead of me….like starting over again….but 20 yrs back…..This alone makes it all so weird. Not just another sex, another life—but altogether another era. Can anyone say, “The Portrait of Dorian Gray?”

  8. Boy, what a rabbit hole that opens up. Following various links, and subsequent links really gets you deep into a bizzaro world. Just about everyone vaguely involved in this and related vices are obviously gravely disordered. No need to go to hell, most of these folks are already living theirs out. May the Lord have mercy.

    • We may not “stop” the useless & harmful gender-reassignment surgery genital mutilation, but we can certainly INFORM, so other people, esp. parents, know about this entirely psychological and biologically-fictitious disorder.

  10. I absolutely abhor putting on make-up and fixing my hair all the time. Just so hard to believe Jenner and others actually want to do this. I still believe he had some kind of trauma as a child.

    • The trannies have never gone through menstrual cramps, pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, or menopause. But, according to bruce and the other trannies, it’s the makeup, fake hair, fake breasts, injected hips, vaginal “wound”, being eager to please sexually, deadly fake feminizing hormones, and how one “feels” that makes a “woman” (kinda like an adult movie actress)….having XX chromosomes, ovaries, uterus, mammary glands, and a wider pelvis seems to be mere byproducts of being female. So, the trannies can teach women what it means to be truly female by how the hair and makeup are done and the size of breast and hip implants. These are all socially constructed traits of how some people think a woman should look or behave.
Apparently, trannies and their supporters have been allowed to distort the definition of womanhood by narrowly focusing on the appearance of a female (makeup, size of breasts and hips) rather than her biology and femininity. This is their distortion, and our government allows it. Feminists trying to be politically correct and “equal” with men have rejected femininity and biology and have allowed themselves to be deconstructed and objectified by males with gender identity issues who proclaim their femininity, which is exactly what feminists proclaimed to fight against….men objectifying them (whether gay, straight, or transgendered).
If a woman is female by her appearance alone, then anything can be called “female” as long as it has “breasts” and wears makeup. Women in the US should stand and proclaim what a genetic female is and tell the trannies and our government to get help. Women should embrace their biology and femininity as gifts from God to complement our relationships with men and men should embrace the gifts God gave them to complement their relationships with women. For it is the complement of the sexes under God that is the precursor to family. Every human being on the planet exists because of a female’s egg and a male’s sperm cell.
Our society rewards people who mutilate and sterilize themselves by calling them “heroes” and force those who disapprove with loss of employment or lawsuits or not being politically/socially correct. I say, they are following the crooked and wide path and avoiding the straight and narrow. They want the easy way out instead of the route through Christ. Pray for those lost souls, that they find the straight and narrow path that will lead them to Jesus.

  13. enjoyed the article. Seems like recently I had read about a transgender that regretted the change on a particular website. The transgendered person was using it to tell others NOT to do this…They state….there is no going back. I thought it took great courage to say they were wrong for buying into the lie/ not waiting, when others kept saying they were a hero for the mutilation.

Dr. Mchugh cites a Swedish study for the proposition that Gender Affirmation Surgery results in unhappiness and increased suicide on the part of the patients who undergo it. His argument fails for two reasons. First, the authors of the study caution against the misuse of the study in this way. They specifically state that their study does not point to that conclusion. In fact they state that the surgery may very well improve transgender lives.

Second, to show the effects of the surgery the control group would have to have identical characteristics to the study group except for the surgery. The control group would have to be trans persons who have NOT had the surgery. Instead the control group is non trans persons.

Dr. McHugh is an outlier. The American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association and the World Health Organization have all found that being transgender is not a mental disorder. McHugh disagrees with the tens of thousands of medical and mental health professionals represented by thos groups. That is his right.
